About Notification Reader

Read aloud Android notifications using Text To Speech when using different audio outputs like headphones or Bluetooth headsets.

Ideal for when you listen to music on your device, and just want to get some info about a notification without having to take your phone out of your pocket to look at the screen - the notification will be read out to you and the audio mixed with your music.

Main features -

Respects device audio focus to allow the notification prompts to be mixed with music playback, but not interrupt important applications like games if they request exclusive audio access.
Detects phone call state to not play messages and interfere with ongoing phone call or when phone is ringing.

• Enable or disable for different audio outputs individually:
- Wired headphones / headsets
- Bluetooth audio connections like headphones / headsets / A2DP media profile car kit connections
- Normal phone speaker (disabled by default, please be aware that notification content could potentially include private info that could be heard by others before enabling this output!)

• Only read notifications posted by user selected applications
- A number of common apps are included and disabled by default, see note below.

• Automatically enable or disable notifications for “new” applications the first time they occur.

• Option to automatically dismiss the notification from the notification drawer once it has been read out.

• Manually dismissing a notification from the notification drawer will cancel the reading of that message if it's currently playing, or stop it from being played if it's in a queue of events.

• Support reading out music track info during playback from Google Play Music, Spotify & Rdio.
Please note, the setting “Device Broadcast Status” must be turned on in Spotify to receive track info from it.
Music apps should continue to be disabled in the applications list to avoid the constant updates they post as notifications being read out.

General app notes -

• To use this app you must grant it Notification Access rights from the System Security settings. The first time the app is launched you’ll be prompted to do this and taken to the Security settings page.
The app will not be able to access and read any notifications until this access is granted.

• The standard device text to speech service on a device is used, so requires that you are using a supported language and have installed the voice data to enable it. You can find a shortcut to the TTS settings in the action menu.

• The content read for each notification is dependant on the actual text description in the notification that each application provides.
For example, single text messages from SMS/Hangouts will include the actual message content, emails from different email applications will typically only include the sender & subject line and not the email message content.

A number of common applications notifications are automatically disabled by default. These include -
Android System, Google Play Store, System UI, Download Manager, Google Play Music - as they tend to produce either frequent (Google Play Music download progress notifications!), or just notifications that you are unlikely to want to hear, i.e. USB connections, apps being installed or updated.
These can be enabled if wanted, but be aware that something like downloading music from Google Play Music can produce a lot of messages for progress bar updates!

Great App

Abandonware: Only reads app name and a few words. When sharing large media files, this app will shout "Telegram..Uploading video..Telegram..Uploading video...Telegram..Uploading Video" until it's done! Wow, annoyed much!? Same with other apps. Android 5 can natively read me callers, entire sms messages, etc without any special software, is it really that hard to extend that functionality to other installed apps? So far none can do what they've claimed on playstore. No reply from dev. Tired of developing?

Very user-friendly and simple to configure and use. This app (unlike some others) does read Hangouts messages, and also Google Now notifications (sadly, however, only the Google Now header e.g. "Travel time to work", not the TRULY USEFUL estimated time, delay/incident, alternative route etc info ... do this, and I will be wowed!) [[UPDATE: It's now reading the useful info - WONDERFUL- thanks!]] *** Another thing that would make this app better would be to be able to set up different profiles (i.e. what apps, content to announce, etc) for different audio outputs (e.g. different for Headphones and Bluetooth, different for each Bluetooth device). [[UPDATE: I realise this would require clever design to avoid making the app a lot more complicated, but what I want to hear when I'm in the car on my own is different to what I want everyone to hear via my Bluetooth speaker!]] [[UPDATE: Music sometimes goes quieter for a few seconds but then no notification read - maybe the app asks for volume reduction before checking if it's one it will read out?]]

Tried with Google Play Music and while it did a good job at announcing just the track and artist titles, it repeatedly announced the artist name after pausing. I played around with all the settings and nothing helped.

B70%
by B####:

It claims to detect new apps after they first notify, but it doesn't. Not unless they notify when this app is set to announce them (ie you have headphones on and the device is not in an interactive state). Very confusing when you're trying to get it to detect slack. Also, it tells you a notification is from slack, but not who sent it. It should be configurable on a per-app basis (eg let you see a 'raw' notification and select the fields you want read out) or it's useless.

If you want to play music with the title before it plays, get this. I love this app. After searching for the right app it was this one.

I have tried tons of notification readers and this is the first one that works correctly all the time. The only feature it could use is a notification volume boost.

The app seems good but doesn't read the actual message in Whatsapp notifications. It only states the app and the sender name. Something I'm missing?

I love this app when it's working like it's designed to. But after awhile it just stops reading me my notifications. Not sure why or how to fix/prevent it.

I am using this app with a BlueAnt Q2 Bluetooth headset. The manufacturer provides a message reading app, but it is very unreliable and constantly disconnects. This app has never disconnect. It reads all messages and notifications and tells me who the email is from and the general subject. It is absurdly easy to use and extremely flexible. If I could find a way to pay for it I would. But I can do is to recommend it to others. I tried using about 10 other apps before finding this one, the only one which actually works on a Bluetooth headset. No issues no problems very reliable no ads. What more could you want? It is a solid app and well worth the money. It beats the app by BlueAnt hands down. This review is accurate as of July 7 2015. My phone is a samsung galaxy Avant on T-Mobiile.

Using a Nexus 4, with Hello SMS (Appears in the app list) and trying to get the app to read SMS notifications over my Pioneer head unit in the car (Bluetooth connection). Not sure if I'm doing something wrong or not. Other than that, looks like a great app, and works well over the internal speaker and headphones.

Does just what I need it do: detects when it is connected to my car's bluetooth, and starts reading all notifications from my selected apps, including emails. Brilliant.

The only thing limiting this app is access to notification details provided by android. Hopefully things like the Moto Hint will help improve the APIs by notification reader. I like the detection of headphones.

This works beautifully with my Scala radio system while I'm riding my motorcycle. A nice feature would be allowing it to read the first 30 words of incoming emails. If the app prompted "continue reading?" Then another 30 words would be read. Overall very happy. Nice work.

There seems to be a 5-10 second delay in reading the notifications. I also also would like for the app to read Facebook Messenger messages. (HTC M8)
