Kata soup atau sup berasal dari kata Soupe (Perancis) yang berarti bermacam-macam bahan makanan yang ditambahkan kaldu atau cairan.
Soup dapat disajikan panas atau dingin, berupa sup jernih atau kental. Sup bisa terbuat dari nabati maupun hewani.
