About Remote Launcher Free

*** An excellent app - Editor's Choice from DroidAppOfTheDay.com ***

Remote Launcher is an easy to use tool that enables you to launch applications remotely on your PC via your Android device with a single click. It can also be used to start your PC up, even if it is turned off, with the built in support for Wake On Lan. It consists of an Android app and a small server program for your PC.

There is also support for Android shortcuts and widgets (size 1x1) available to start programs even quicker.

You can configure Remote Launcher to start any application on your PC, e.g. start your mediacenter (xbmc etc), shutdown/restart the computer or run a custom script.

It's also possible to automate Remote Launcher using Android intents or shortcuts. That makes it possible to use it together with tools such as Tasker or Llama to perform tasks at certain events, e.g. "shutdown computer when I leave home" or "send wake on lan packet to computer and start xbmc when I get back home". You can even do things like muting your computer when there's an incoming call and unmuting it when the call finishes. The imagination is the limit.

To use Remote Launcher you need to install the Remote Launcher Server on your PC. Downloads, installation instructions, user guides and examples are available on the project wiki:
http://remotelauncher.owtroid.com

The Remote Launcher server is written in Java so it should work on any pc with the Java Runtime Enviromnment installed (version 1.6 or later), be it Linux, Windows or Mac OS. It has been tested on Ubuntu and Windows 7.

Remote Launcher is a nice alternative to more complex remote control solutions such as vnc or ssh when you just need to start specific programs.

Remote Launcher works both with wifi and cellular connections. However, if you use cellular and the pc running Remote Launcher Server is behind a router, you will have to configure port forwarding on your router to forward the port 4444 to your pc. You will also need to configure the Remote Launcher app to use the IP address of the router instead of the pc in this case.

If you run into any issues, please contact the developer as it is not possible to answer to comments in the Market. You can also follow us on twitter: http://twitter.com/owtroid

This is the free version. It is currently limited to having just one single server configured. A paid version without limitations is also available: http://market.android.com/details?id=com.owtroid.remotelauncher

Wake on LAN and Shutdown and Hibernate options are useful for file sharing, so I could save energy when I am not streaming from my PC to my phone. I just wish that the PC server client had a feature that would start it as a Windows service so I would not have to log onto the computer for it to start, but Hibernating is an okay alternative to totally shutting down.

Installation and configuration quite easy. On mac os, use the 'open' function to launch applications (example: open /Applications/Calendar.app) Would be better if we could choose the icon for each widget.

Quick and easy to install (had to run the server installation as admin though) but took about 5min to get everything up and running with a quick .bat file as a test. Will definitely get the full version when i get a good use for this. Well done.

Excellent app! Server runs well on OSX as well, only 0.1% in CPU.

App works well for advertised function. I would like some advance functions ie. Pass parameter to script with intents, so tasker can send input with a launch.

Specially because of shortcuts launchers! So happy that developer though of everything! Now I can control my PC with Tasker like apps (Automagic) :) when stupid people integrate Tasker and that's it. Smart people give us ability to create shortcuts :) One only thing: does not work when I am on a different wifi. Idk maybe I am doing something wrong but it server and the app can't connect to each other. Otherwise GREAT! That sounds confusing.. maybe build that into the app?

I contacted the developer a long time ago regarding this app, he responded quickly and was friendly. App works perfectly! Thanks!

I run a multi camera, live video stream. I use a home-built IP controlled switcher to chose which camera is selected for the stream. Running the server software (Under Ubuntu) this ap lets me do camera changes from my Android tablet from anywhere in the world. Works great!

Works absolutly perfect with galasy s2 and ubuntu server 11.04, and the developer is realy helpfull

This app is absolutely a must for HTPC use. However the server app keeps exiting randomly. Leave it open for a couple hours... it silently exits without giving an error to the screen (I'd much prefer the error over no feedback at all). Need a more stable server server app to make it worthwhile.

T70%

you know the iTunes remote? that's a great app, it only has one problem - they forgot to add a launch iTunes button... so if iTunes it's not running you have to launch it somehow. Same with XBMC, etc - remotes are great once your media player is already running on the target computer. With this, you have that covered - with a very simple installation on the PC and extremely easy configuration you have the launchers ready on your android phone. Just make sure you have Java installed on the target computer.
