Indische Keuken

Indonesisch of Indisch? Vaak worden deze twee verward met elkaar, terwijl ze toch echt verschillend zijn. De Indonesische keuken is de authentieke keuken van Indonesië. Deze keuken is zeer divers, omdat de honderden eilanden van de archipel op culinair gebied verschillen. Daar valt meer over te lezen onder regionale specialiteiten.

De Indische keuken kent zijn oorsprong echter in de koloniale periode van het huidige Indonesië. De oorspronkelijke gerechten van Indië zijn aangepast aan de smaak van de Nederlandse kolonisten. Zij ontdekten in Indië de eetgewoonten en producten van de plaatselijke bevolking. Toen zij na de oorlog terugkeerden in Nederland probeerden zij de nieuwe gerechten te bereiden. Ook kwamen er veel mensen van gemengde afkomst (Nederlands-Indisch) naar Nederland. Zij begonnen hier toko's en eethuisjes.

In plaats van de exotische ingrediënten uit Indië werden hier oerhollandse producten gebruikt. Ook werden de gerechten aangepast aan de Westerse smaak door de sambal weg te laten. Deze samenvoeging van Indonesisch en Nederlands noem je de Indische keuken. De Indische keuken is ook een beetje beïnvloed door de Britten en Portugezen, die in de koloniale periode eveneens invloedrijk waren in Indië.
