Onkyo Remote for Android
After last update the app crashes before it connects to receiver. Only ever worked like 75% of the time. Worthless. I have not been able to connect phone to receiver for several months. I am considering tossing Onkyo out for Panasonic, Sony or other mainstream brand that provides a useable app. Update - App started to work again when I updated the firmware on receiver.
This is crap. This app cannot find the receiver. This receiver works just fine using the internet from the hard remote. This is not worth your time. They just put this app out there so they can say they have an app, but they know they don't need to support it and it doesn't have to work because there's nothing you can do about it
App does most basic things, and works quite smooth on my TX-8130. However, there's at least one feature missing that makes it very annoying: you cannot switch between speakers A, B, and A+B from within the app. Which means that if you set up your speakers in two rooms, you still have to walk to the other room. What's the point in that?
Connectivity issues solved with a new wireless router. Seems very stable now, but probably due for some updates. Would love to see A/B speaker control as well as balance. Also would like the ability to play from USB Genre, etc., however is does support gapless playback, so please don't mess with that :-)
Very sporadic in control of the remote speaker. Sometimes you're able to control the volume but most times you're not. You have to go through a number of almost random settings to get only the remote speakers to work and then 75 % of the time you can't control the volume. To be fair it works fine on the main speakers.
Generally I do like the convenience of the app, but for the life of me I can't figure out why the speaker A/B selections are not available. It means I have to physically go to the unit and change it with the remote. Totally stupid. If it's in the app I haven't been able to find it.
I was having trouble getting this app to connect to my HT-R693 receiver as some have noted also noted here. But, I'm happy to say the suggestion to turn the power off to the receiver for a few seconds and then back on clears up the problem. I have to say I really love this app, using from my tablet. It is way more convenient than the remote control. I should also note that I have a Samsung blu-ray player HDMI cabled to the receiver and this app does a great job controlling it, except for changing out the disks! Guess we still got to get out of chairs once in awhile.
Previous version worked pretty well, but since the last update it will not work at all, completely useless. Tried rebooting, reconnecting, running setup again, but nothing. Would give ZERO stars if I could.
Works as advertised, not the best interface but not bad. My receiver is connected via Ethernet, seems solid. Over wifi it was a bit flakier. Didn't connect reliably 100% of the time, I could always get it to connect after messing with it. But now that it's a wired connection to a switch it seems more reliable.
I just used this app a few days ago, now it crashes before it connects to the receiver. Please fix this app, it's summer and I've been using it for years for my outdoor speakers. Thank you!
The app worked when first installed on TX-RZ610 now it finds the reciever but will not work at ALL. A huge inconvenience. Not what I paid for nor expectected from a $600+ reciever. Please fix this ASAP.
This app worked great until the update! Now will not connect, no matter what. NR 737. I purchased a Yamaha receiver for the basement and that app works flawlessly.... And the Yamaha sounds better as well with less expensive speakers! Guess I need a Yamaha for the upstairs as well.
Now will not connect at all. I have tried this app on both Android & Apple platforms and neither work. Onkyo really needs to get their act together for these expensive A/V systems.
I'm glad I didn't buy this receiver for smartphone integration. My TX-NR636 doesn't show up in this app any more and it used to. Useless. Update: if you go to demo mode and reset the app it might find your receiver again. Go to demo mode. Under gear icon go to app info and click reset.
Mine works better when plugged into Ethernet rather with with Onkyo wireless adapter. Sometimes it cannot find my stereo and I need to unplug the stereo and then plug it back in. App is simple but great. Stereo is not so great at connecting to the app.
Functions are not clear, and response is sluggish. Frankly the dedicated remote is also somewhat confusing, and should be more user friendly. I do like the sound and flexibility of the TX-NR626 receiver, however. I guess I'll spend a bit more time learning the app. BTW the "Home" button on both app and Onkyo remote should NOT be the button for the SETUP menu. BTW I am an experienced computer and A/V tech.
For the longest time I blamed this app, when in fact the problem is with my receiver. It randomly 'forgets' it is on the network and has to be reset. Only a hard reset gets the connection working again and my receiver is hardwired! This app is great and by far the easiest way to control the receiver.
Better user interface, but can't exit app. Strange Update: when playing music from my phone via the app, there's no way to pause, stop, forward or backward. The only way is to press the back button and choose a different track. Thanks for the updates for making it worse.
I chose the Onkyo AV receiver over the similar Yamaha Rx-v581 because the mid range sounded somewhat more clean. The Onkyo was also £50 more expensive. Whilst I am very happy with the Onkyo AV receiver I am baffled by the remote app. It 'sees' the receiver but then it stops working. (the later "controller" app doesn't even find the receiver!) Expensive equipment should work better than this! Hugely disappointed.
Good luck streaming via Bluetooth. It connects but always need to reboot the receiver to start working. Horrible! 90% of the time it won't connect to the receiver.
Used to work great. Sees NR636, but either crashes on selection or spins endlessly trying to connect. Android 6.0.1, Galaxy Note 4. Harmony apps connect easily. Wasted hours trying to get it to work on phone, tablets etc.
Loving my new 656 amp Thanks Onkyo for making such great amps. Big improvement over my 3 year old Onkyo amp
Would be better if it supported the Whole House Mode function. Receiver seems to get out of sync if you don't use that mode.
I have to unplug the receiver for a couple of seconds, once the receiver comes back on the app can communicate with it. It works for about a week then I have to reboot the receiver again. When it does connect it works very well. I have two Onkyo receivers in my home and both seem to do well once the app finds the receivers. The only thing that's missing is a button for the a/b speaker selector on my TX-8050.
After the last update the app could see the receiver but wouldn't connect. After uninstalling the app, reinstalling it, unplugging the receiver from power for 2 minutes and plugging it back in, it now works again. Kind of a pain, but at least it works again..
The volume adjustment is the most-used, so it makes no sense to hide it. The volume controls need to be available from any screen.
I have the Onkyo tx-8150 stereo receiver. I am using it only via the Onkyo remote app. The app constantly has problems finding the receiver. Sometimes I have to reboot the receiver and / or the phone until it somehow works, although I still haven't figured out the magic sequence that would make it work. This is very frustrating. The experience is awful. When I am able to use the app, it is very slow to show the songs from which to select. In addition, when going back, the list of folders / songs always restarts at the beginning rather than remember I have a Yamaha a/v receiver at home with MusicCast. This works beautifully and is very easy to use. I wish I could say as much for my Onkyo setup.
Latest update no longer connects, used to work fine, now it's totally useless as it won't connect, it sees the receiver but won't connect and also force closes randomly
wWhen it works it is fantastic, and gives full device control on the receiver and many connected components. However, at times I lose coonection to my mobile devices. I usually have to unplug the receiver then stop then start wifi to reconnect. Other than that a good app overall.
Why are the options and functionality so limited? I think it has 1/4 of the things you can choose from the actual Spotify App. At least it needs a way to pull up the many playlists on Spotify to make it usable.
App can see the receiver on the network but will not under ANY circumstances connect to the device. I gave the app one star for the demo mode. It works every time and gives you good insight as to how it should work if it could just connect.
Using an TX-NR626, even when I've left it running, on a hard wired connection (not in standby) this app sometimes can't find it. Even when Spotify can and connects perfectly. Shame.
This remote app is an embarrassment. I have used it for years and it has always been flaky, but after recent updates is just won't work. It crashes time and again. I work at a tech company in Silicon Valley and I know what it takes to build and maintain an app, and for some reason, Onkyo isn't even trying here. This app gets very rare updates and none of them seem to fix the stability issues which are widely reported (this app has lots of very negative reviews). If you are considering an Onkyo receiver I suggest you skip it and buy one with an app that works. Do NOT support a company that thinks it can put out something like this and leave it non-functional for years. They need to respect their customers who paid for their products with hard earned money.
This app and Onkyo receivers are garbage. I have a top of the line tx-nr3030 and can not find the receiver. The receiver is very glitchy overall.
No longer works. In the last couple weeks it no longer will connect and the app crashes while attempting to connect. Useless.
Sorry, Onkyo - this is a crap-app. Used to be good - and a great concept. Now dropping connection all the time - absolutely useless. You can do better!
Used to be great now not so much. Connect with wifi plays one song and stops. Better with Blu tooth. It used to display song title, now samsung 7. Come on onkyo fix this. Another app broken with an update.
Used to work but now can't even connect to my TX-NR737 on my Droid Turbo 2 with Marshmallow. App crashes every time when it tries to connect. Useless now.
Great control and access to my music libraries out on the deck for zone 2 from my tablet or phone. This kind of automation would have cost literally thousands of dollars not to many years ago. For a free App it works very well and some of the connection issues others talk about, just reset your phone and unplug your reciever for a minute reset your network connection. It will work! Well done Onkyo well done!

Really impressed. I love it. Can customize inputs that show up, labels, and control my zones remotely on my TX-NR717. This is EXACTLY what I needed. Even streams music from my smartphone directly to receiver with hardly any setup or knowledge (auto uses dlna, i am not talking about bluetooth. Basically synthesizes a feature my receiver doesnt actually have) Even album art! Great app. Thank you! P.s. what are all these people complaining about?? Try the app, mine works great
