About OpenPaths

OpenPaths (https://openpaths.cc) is a secure data locker for personal location information.

Using our Android app you can track your location, visualize where you've been, and upload your data to the OpenPaths website. You can then download your data from the website in a variety of friendly formats, including KML, JSON, and CSV. The OpenPaths API enables you to integrate your own software with the platform.

You can keep your location history to yourself, or you can share it with specific research initiatives, art projects, or educational programs as you so choose. The OpenPaths online interface allows you to manage who has access to your data. Your data is secure on the encrypted OpenPaths servers and cannot be accessed by anyone without your express consent.

OpenPaths is a new way for individuals to take ownership of, to work with, and to share the data that they generate in their daily lives. OpenPaths is a community project initiated by the Research and Development Lab at The New York Times Company.

Using the app: The app allows you to Register and Login to the OpenPaths service. It consists of two tabs - 1) a Map that shows your location markers and 2) app Settings. The app allows you with a choice to view your location data for the past 24 hours, past week, present week, in addition to viewing all data at once. The location markers "age" as the time passes by. So, your most recent location markers will be Red, followed by somewhat older locations as Orange, then Yellow and finally Grey spots.

I think it crashes everytime it wants to access(/load?) location data so it's unusable.

M70%
by M####:

Great project, may fit in the hole that Latitudes demise will leave behind. Needs better history browsing, though.

Why such a good idea is not being actively developed? In my phone it crashes frequently!

Z70%
by Z####:

This app is in serious need of an update - in terms of interface design but more importantly to bring it up to speed with new Android Location APIs. It's a shame, since the project has/had potential.

I70%
by I####:

The app is pretty basic but nice, unfortunately it seems the website crashes a lot so the app can't report it's data, and you can't view your data. I have switched to the app owntracks.

Lacks polish, but does the job well

I heard Jer Thorpe mention this app during a talk recently, and was excited to give it a go. But it crashed repeatedly (every 10 minutes or so) on my Samsung Galaxy S5, and when I emailed info@openpaths.cc, the address given for support on the OpenPaths.cc website, the email bounced. I see no other way to contact anyone involved in this project. I hope they get it working again. (The email and the app.)

Really useful, but keeps crashing.

Q70%

It's always in the bg even if I didn't start it (that alone is worth removing it), then it keeps crashing while on the bg (doing what?).

A great up to track your movements with a very low battery demand

Last week, my backend system stopped working with the OpenPaths system. Now I find the website https://www.openpaths.cc is reporting a "504 Bad Gateway" or timeout error. Strangely, the app on my phone didn't show any problems. I tried uninstalling the app, then re-installing and registering with new details and it says "something went wrong". Indeed. I was pretty pleased with it before but now I wonder if Hearbleed has killed it. A trawl of the web doesn't seem to show any status updates... Anybody know what happened?

Should update when ui is closed, or make use of location data stored in other apps.

T70%

I kept not seeing my location history and checked the other reviews just to find out it only updates when the app is on. What's the point in that?

I think its a great proyect, but the app doesn't seem to bue recording any data...

@blprnt, love your work and I'd love to leverage this for some great art, mash-up with twitter, facebook, tripit, etc. Updates are too infrequent now for that, though. Fix that, add a monthly update/summary/reminder email and you've got five stars.

I'm using the app to log hourly "breadcrumbs" as I work and travel, and I've found it to be pretty good since the latest update. I'm not sure it completely lived up to my expectations following the TED talk, and there's scope for improvement, but overall, I'd say definitely worth trying this app. :-)

I like the concept of a personal location data locker, but I really want this app to track me even when the app's UI is closed (from a service). Unfortunately, this app only tracks my movement while it is open, which is not very useful and means that two days after installing it, there is no additional data to upload. I'll be happy to give five stars when this app gives the option to track me in the background...

T70%
by T####:

Doens't update location very frequently. I think it doesn't update at all when the app is running in the background. Definitely needs some work.

S70%
by S####:

I'm with the others. I'm VERY interested in OpenPaths after watching the TED talk and I'd love to participate. It is NOT tracking any of my data unless the app is open, and that makes it very inconvenient to use. I understand background tracking may lower battery life or some people may not like it, but at least give us that option. Until it's there, this app isn't very useful.

When it works it's okay but Crashes my phone 3 or 4 times per day and refuses to uninstall. Galaxy s2 running ics. At the moment it's the app from hell.

Seems to get confused by either rebooting or when starting after a flight.

Still not sure what to do with this, but its frequent crashes are annoying and will shortly result in removal if it isn't fixed quickly. I have removed and reinstalled several times.

I came looking for a location history after Google turned off Latitude. The map view could use some serious work in this regard. Still gotta hand it to the NYT for producing an app like this that is privacy focused.
