About Fry Words (Free)

Expanding on the Dolch sight words, Dr. Edward B. Fry in 1996 created a new list of high frequency words (“Fry Words”). The Fry instant words are the most common words used in English ranked by order of frequency.

Dr. Fry found that 25 words make up 1/3 of all words published, 100 words make up ½ of all words published and 300 words make up 65% of all written material. These high frequency words should be recognized instantly by young readers.

The Fry words are helpful for adults learning English as a second language as well as for children.

This app has 500 words divided into five levels and then divided into groups of twenty-five words, based on frequency of use and difficulty in a flash card setting.

Features included:
• The first 500 Fry Words
• Words can be marked to the Review list (use the star to mark and menu to clear list)
• The word is read out when the card is touched
• Long press buttons to jump to start or end

Paid ad-free version also available.

Would actually be an awesome app if the word reader actually worked when you touch the word..but it's still a good tool to always have flashcards with me.

This is a great app for my children. They are learning their sight (fry) words at home as well as at school. This app also allows me to go paperless. Last school term, I kept losing the sight words list that was being sent home.

Good. Font size is big and the speed to the next word is fast moving. It would be excellent to have a button for children to click on the words they are unable to read.

My 5 Year Old son uses this app all by himself. From selecting the sets to flipping and reading to marking the word for review. No supervision needed. He can read much faster now by memorizing these Fry words instead of trying to sound out every word like he used to. Thank you so much. Love your app!!!

I like how the app works and is set up. Unfortunately, I don't know what accent this person has. "And" is pronounced like "end". Other words are mispronounced too. How does this help? Uninstalling to find another app.

It would be nice if the developers can make an option to trace a site word before moving on to the next site word.

There is no way to access the settings so why even show the picture.? The picture you should be showing is that when you touch the word it is pronounced I almost miss this important feature .I would give it 5 stars if I could add my own words, fix that and you have a 5 star rating

These are Dr.Fry's sight word list. Similar to Dolch Sight Words but these are the most used words in English. There's a lot of words, 500!. You can touch the card and it will say the word so she is able to use this while I'm driving for example. My little one loves learning. You can also get another 500 words in the app Fry Words2.

The only huge glaring bug is that it crashes immediately every time I try to go to past the first review word, every time, on both my Nexus 7 and my Droid DNA smartphone.

This app would be perfect for the second grade ESL (English as a Second Language) student that I am tutoring if it had the option to turn on the spoken word for each card. Then she could study independently at home too.

Great app! I love that I can quickly tag what words my student needs to review. I also like how quickly I can flip thru words because it's perfect for my student with a small attention span. Please make another app or add to this one for the rest of the fry words :-)
