About BBQ TankMeter - Grill Gauge

BBQ TankMeter is a Propane Grill Gas Gauge that acoustically measures the amount of propane in a standard 20 pound tank and graphically displays the result. A set of eight color-coded bars indicate the level of propane in the tank. As propane is used, green bars disappear, eventually showing yellow and red, then red alone. When a tank measurement displays only the red bar, it’s time to get more propane.

BBQ TankMeter is designed for use with standard 20 pound steel propane tanks as shown in the screenshots, the type commonly used for BBQ grills and portable patio heaters. The app will NOT work with fiberglass tanks or steel tanks of other sizes.

Operation:
Hold your Android device approximately 6 inches from the tank and start the app. Tap the “Read” button. Wait until the app displays the message, “Listening for tank”, then firmly strike the center of the tank with your knuckle or a hard object like a quarter. The tank will “ring” like a bell and BBQ TankMeter will display the message “Reading Tank”. After a brief pause for calculation, the result will be displayed.

Troubleshooting:
BBQ TankMeter only works with “standard” 20 pound steel propane tanks as shown in the screenshots. The tank must be vertically-oriented with the valve on top and must be able to “ring” like a bell when struck firmly with a hard object. If the tank is covered, insulated or otherwise physically damped in such a way that it cannot “ring” clearly, the measurement will not work.

Triggering:
BBQ TankMeter begins operation when the “Read” button is pressed. The app listens for the ringing sound generated when the tank is struck with a hard object and triggers when the sound of the tank is heard. In certain noisy environments BBQ TankMeter may not be able to differentiate the sound of the tank from the background noise. In this case, adjust the trigger level in advanced settings or try the app again later in a less noisy environment.

Demonstration Mode:
BBQ TankMeter has a Demo function that randomly generates the “ring” of a tank and measures the result for that sound. To run a demonstration, press the "Demo" button. After a brief pause your Android will generate the “ring” of a tank, measure the sound, then display the result. If your Android does not detect the sound, turn up the audio volume on your device and ensure the microphone isn't covered by your finger or hand.

Calibration:
BBQ TankMeter is pre-calibrated for use with a Worthington Cylinder Model 303955 propane tank and other 20 lb propane tanks with WC 47.6 LB and TW 16.6 LB. For general use there is no need to recalibrate. To more accurately calibrate your BBQ TankMeter app, test a full tank with a known amount of propane or weigh the amount of propane in your tank and adjust the calibration to the weight. 20 lb propane tank fluid level gauge. So far so good.

Tried it on a full tank and a half full. Seems to be pretty accurate. Using a Nexus 6.

This is pretty cool...

Never run out of gas at the wrong time and never take a tank back with a usable amount of gas.

measures accurately, did have to tap tank with object heavier than a quarter for sound to be picked up by app

It read 10.9 left in my tank, but to me it felt almost empty, so I decided to trust it and Grill, but the tank went empty about 10 min into grilling!, lucky I had a spare tank, but this app was a waste of money for me

I have tried everything! Calibrating changing settings etc.. emailed support and all they said is to uninstall then reinstall to reset settings. Still didn't work. I was trying to use on normal small tank. Oh well I will continue looking. I don't recommend it. Wish it worked.

Wow, an app that actually does what it is suppose to without a bunch of spam, bloat, and privacy issues. Other app makers could take a lesson. Oh yeah, the readings are quite accurate.

It works great, I use a screwdriver to tap the tank I have two tanks never run out when grilling

This app works great on my moto x. I disabled the AGC like they recommended and the app works great! Wish I had it the last time I was grilling. Ran out of propane half way through the outing. Had to leave guests to get more propane. That will never happen again with this app.

I kept hitting 2 different tanks neither one would read. Galaxy s5

After several attempts, the app couldn't detect my tank. I tried the test sound generated by the demo, it couldn't detect the demo sound. The trick for me was setting the trigger level to 3% (low). Now calibrated, we'll see how it works; great idea.

Q70%
by Q####:

It gave the right readings for my tank when empty and full. That gives confidence that it'll get the intermediate results right. Last time I got my tank filled before a party I learned that it was half full. The gas station charges as much for that as for an empty tank. This app would've saved me time and more than its price right then. (I stumbled upon this app while searching for my BBQ Timer app, and am glad I found it.)
