Saponify Soap Calculator

Great app! Many people complain that it didn't include animal fats, but I just added them manually. Something I would change about the app is the screen that shows all of your recipes. It should be a list with minimal details until you tap on the recipe. Then it should show you more details in a summary form, giving you the option to revise it. Other than that, it's a very useful app.

It's OK. it is a great calculator and works well. A+ for that. But it gets a C in oil inventory. Needs more oils, things like manteca, shortening etc are not available. Wish it had the few database the bramble berry webside does.

I am new in soap making world. Still learning about the recipes. The app help lot. It gives the condition of my soap such hardness etc. But there was no explanation about the best percentation of water and lye should be add in.

Great app. Only 2 things it would be great if the notes were visible without going into "edit mode", and if there was an entry for tallow. Tallow itself doesn't contribute to animal cruelty as it's a waste product and arguably causes less harm to animals than Palm oil, which is listed. Many vegetarian soapers use tallow.

No animal fats... you've got to be kidding... uninstalling. No one is going to kill an animal on purpose to make soap. Using the fat from bacon is at least making lemonade for the "cruel" lemons...

I have used this app to calculate several different hot process soap recipes. Every batch has turned out perfectly. I have found the app to be very educational too, as you can easily make slight alterations to a recipe as you develop it, and see the effects that the change will be on the various soap characteristics. I have compared the calculations with a couple of well-known soap calculators, and found this one to be accurate. I think it is easier to use, though, and love that it is right on my phone.

Revised up from 4 stars. While it does not have animal fats built in, the ability to add other fats/oils makes this potentially more versatile, especially as newer oils enter the market. HSHO sunflower oil and sunflower stearin are intriguing emerging possibilities, to name two.

Given I've used Brambleberry's calc for a bit and have found huge discrepancies in the lye amounts between my soapmaker 3 pro version and theirs, I have to say I love this! The numbers are dead on and that's what counts! I hardly ever use animal fats so it matters not that they aren't here. I wish I could give more stars!

Your application is excellent. But I have no idea if your calculation is based on a 95% or 99% lye/caustic soda concentration?

And how do you calculate the additives and EO? I don't understand how thw superfat count work. Do I need to put the amount indicated plus the one I have choosed? If so, the oil amount is wrong. And why can't we know the total amount of ingredients ine the entire recipe? Confusing and incomplete. I was really happy about the cruelty free aspect and all the infos about the oils but this app is useless.

I do love this soap calc! The only thing I would change is that it gave a full total of weights not just oil weights.

Just started using it but I think it is great. Simple yet has everything I need. Only one thing. I don't think I can change super fat letter on in the recipe.

So good. Makes soap formulating super duper easy. My only issue is they don't have all the oils listed

Doesn't explain very well how to use the app or what any of the numbers actually mean while looking at the oils, though I do like how it breaks down what the different oils will give to the soap.

I absolutely love this app. While not perfect, it really helps streamline things for me in the kitchen. I do wish it included tallow and lard, but I was able to add those values in myself. Things I wish it did. [1] Show my recipes more as a list, just showing names. Click to view recipe. Long press to edit or view properties (hard, condition, etc). Scrolling through entire recipes makes finding the one you want really difficult, and seeing more than one at once can cause terrible mixups [2] Ability to make a copy of a recipe. Sometimes I just want to make small changes without losing my previous, tested recipe. Rebuilding the same recipe over and over gets tedious, and sometimes I forget to change values, like liquid and superfat. These small changes, to me, would make this perfect. It does exactly what it's supposed to though, and reliably. It's just a little clunky to use and navigate.

Very useful app. Easy to use and give more information than most other soap calculators. 4/5 rating only because lard and tallow is missing from the oil list. Except for that it is a 5* app.

Loved that you can save recipes and easy access to the soap qualities. Wish it included animal fats or had ability to manually add other fats

I need some numbers to add bacon fat. Bacon might be murder, but it isn't cruel.

Love this app! It calculates the amount of oil and lye you need in your soap recipe. Flexible app with many nifty options that make soap making a little easier.

Have been using this app for several months now and really like it. I'm new to soap-making and I find it helpful in formulating my own recipes. I don't mind that there are no animal oils/lard/tallow, as I don't use them. But, it would be nice to have some basic recipes to work from. Also, perhaps some explanations as to INS, iodine and superfatting - what the ranges given mean to the end result. Overall though, this does just what it says - and I like that I can do it all easily from my phone. Thanks!!

There is no option to save your own recipes. No basic recipes. Also, any program by itself is cruelty free by default. I do not think it is right for you to cut off an option for me for adding animal fats (admit, I missed it before downloading). Before I was using free on-line calculator, it is MUCH more convenient. I do want to have a program right on my phone, so I've paid a couple of $$ for another one. Uninstalling.

Seems okay but the no lard thing is a bit nuts. I live in a remote area and have issues getting most of the 'fancy oil's that you can get in more populated areas. Vegetable shortening such as Crisco is always an option that is animal free since that's what this app seems to strive for and it's something I can get my hands on without ordering online and waiting a month. I just looked up the values and added it but the other numbers like cleaning and hardness I had to omit.

Great app actually. You can add oils or fats for anything missing. You can change the batch size so easily if you change your mind. Easy enough to learn and there is beauty in its simplicity. Tried 4 different soap apps and decided this is the one I like using the best. Would love a copy recipe button so I can duplicate and edit to help with trial batches. I particularly love the information and usage rates. I dont have to leave the app to google.

Please, please add an option that will allow us to back up our recipes. If I ever lost my phone or it died, I would be screwed lol

I just ran into an issue when trying to make liquid soap recipes. I don't buy 100% pure KOH and this software only calculates at that percentage. Other calculators offer a 90% purity option... Will change rating after update...

It wouldn't let me create new recipes at all, all I can do is look at the fats properties.

Its pretty good. I wish I could click on a saved and see qualities and PRINT it. I cant mess with my phone elbow deep in oils and lye

Confusing layout and not options for animal fats!!!! Not worth my time writing this review.

Animal fats aren't included, so this won't work for me. If i could get this exact app with animal fats, it would be perfect. I like this app the most of the soap making apps, but want just one app that does it all.

Love love love the fact you are a animal free app. As a vegan soap maker this means a lot.

I use this app to brainstorm new formulations. It works great as a first step in the process. I like it more than the paid app I have.

Their is no lard or tallow :/ making this app unusable for me. Great idea though

This lye calculator has been very useful although I am searching for one that features clean animal tallow, and recycled oils

I love the app, it gives you a good idea of what you need, calculating the lye solution for you once you add in your quantities. Using the website is just as good.

I love using it. It helps me formulate my soaps and its very effective. No bugs. I use it all the time. Love it.

Traditional soaps are made with animal fats. There are none to choose from. The app is also not terribly intuitive.
