About iRecord Butterflies

Butterflies are in trouble. A third of UK species are threatened and three-quarters are in decline. Butterfly recording is the foundation for protecting these beautiful creatures. The iRecord Butterflies app helps you to identify the butterflies that you see, but also uses your sightings to help save butterflies.

Sightings will be stored within the “iRecord” website and passed onto the “Butterflies for the New Millennium” national recording scheme run by the charity Butterfly Conservation, with support from the Biological Records Centre. This long-running scheme has gathered millions of butterfly sightings that provide vital information about how the fortunes of butterflies have changed over the decades. Your sightings will be used to understand the causes of decline and to inform conservation work on the ground to help threatened species.

Scientists could not do this work without the help of people across the UK, like you, reporting when and where they find a species. Thank you for using iRecord Butterflies to help us protect these wonderful insects.

There are many reviews saying that it won't upload data. I thought maybe I would be lucky. No. I've not tried saving with GPS on but I shouldn't need to. I'm next to my router. The only reason I'm not uninstalling is because I think it may be useful to identify butterflies but unfortunately to then upload to a different site. I

Great app. Would be useful if it could be moved to an adopted SD card.

Because this app is so easy to use I have been able to record so many more butterflies than I ever would have and as a result I look for more butterflies. it's a win win situation! I would however like to be able to use it on my laptop too as sometimes it's not easy to get the location from GPS, my android phone has to have the GPS turned on first

An excellent little app, which does what it claims. Only problem I have is the lack of cooperation from the subject matter, whom do not appear to like having their pictures taken by me.

This app is a tremendously useful tool which will help you to learn a lot about butterflies and help you in the valuable and delightful pursuit of recording them. I love it! The icing on the cake would be a means of reviewing a survey for a range of dates and a site, e.g. some totals by species, simple charts, a map showing totals. Lots and lots of work no doubt!

Thanks for the fix. Can't wait to get out there and start recording!

Would be better if there was an option to automatically upload all sightings when wifi available, instead of having to manually send each one individually

Would be better if locations are remembered.

I can't figure out why permission to use the microphone is needed ... at first I thought I could record voice files. Please review this, thanks.

Why can I not see the records of other sightings in my local area? I've input my sightings but it would be nice to see what other people have spotted near by. Seems an obvious feature???

Some butterflies do not have an open wing shot. This is essential for identification.

Easy to use in the field. Very flexible enabling you to record individuals or a whole site. Have been using it all year

I love taking photos of the butterflies I see whilst out walking. I had lots of problems activating my account. I had accidentally typed in the wrong email address. It would be helpful to have had a link to your email address when I didn't receive an activation code. Or have a contact us bit on the app. Will be recommending this to everyone at my local bird observatory. Please can you make a moth one? Or better yet an app that records any species and sends the data off to the correct organisation!

Love the app, love the gallery. Have to do recording at home afterwards tho' as find it difficult to locate the the site in the field, might just be me tho'.

It has been working perfectly since I downloaded it but today I can't seem to add the location, i can add species to my sightings but I can't edit the location, when I touch the buttons for use your location, use maps etc nothing happens so when I save my sighting it comes up as not finished, very frustrating!

N70%

Pretty good and a great idea. I would prefer it if my locations were saved rather than having to load them each time and would like to be able to record multiple sightings on each entry.
