Klankroute Maasland

Klankroute Maasland is een grensoverschrijdende fietsroute door het Maasland van vroeger en nu. De mobiele app loodst de fietser door het heden en verleden van het Maaseikse en Maasbrachtse ommeland aan de hand van geluiden. De fietsroute volgt het bestaande knooppuntennetwerk en is 42 km lang. Een verkorte versie telt 21 km.

Interviews met de lokale bevolking, nieuw geschreven composities en oude geluidsopnames nemen de luisteraar mee naar het Maasland van de eerste helft van de twintigste eeuw. De klankroute biedt een akoestische terugblik op het eenvoudige boerenbestaan van de regio en volgt de transformaties die het landschap en de bevolking ondergaan hebben ten tijde van de Wereldoorlogen: grindwinning, de Duitse bezetting, overstromingen en technologische vooruitgang hebben de streek sterk getekend en maken de Grensmaas tussen België en Nederland tot wat hij nu is.

Elk geluidsfragment is onlosmakelijk verbonden met een specifieke locatie en kan dan ook alleen ter plaatse beluisterd worden met behulp van een applicatie en een hoofdtelefoon. Zo verkrijgen onopvallende en ogenschijnlijk onbeduidende plaatsen een cultuurhistorische of muzikale dimensie. De applicatie bevat composities en collages van Charo Calvo, Nils Van der Plancken, Stéfan Piat, Evelien van den Broek en Jesse Passenier.

De klankroute en applicatie werden bedacht en ontwikkeld door Musica, Impulscentrum voor Muziek (Neerpelt, België), en Intro in situ (Maastricht, Nederland). De applicatie werd ontworpen door Yvan vander Sanden (Mute) binnen de game-engine Esenthel. Het project kadert in de Klankatlas, een website die het akoestische DNA van Belgisch en Nederlands Limburg in kaart brengt. An abridged version has 21 km.

Interviews with local people, newly written compositions and sound recordings old take the listener to the Maasland the first half of the twentieth century. The sound route offers an acoustic retrospective of the simple rural life of the region and follows the transformations that have at the time of the World Wars, the landscape and population processes: gravel, the German occupation, flooding and technological progress, the region strongly drawn and make the Meuse between Belgium and the Netherlands to what it is now.

Each sound has been inextricably linked to a specific location and can therefore only be played on the spot using an application and a headset. Thus obtaining inconspicuous and seemingly insignificant places a cultural or historical musical dimension. The application includes compositions and collages by Charo Calvo, Nils Van der Plancken, Stefan Piat, Evelien van den Broek and Jesse Passenier.

The sound route and application were conceived and developed by Musica, Impulse Centre for Music (Neerpelt, Belgium), and Intro in situ (Maastricht, Netherlands). The application was designed by Yvan Vander Sanden (Mute) within the game engine Esenthel. The project is part of the Atlas Sound, a website that maps the acoustic DNA of Belgian and Dutch Limburg.
