About Ulster Scots Newtownabbey
This audio driving tour of Newtownabbey will take you through some well known points of interest...as well as some more obscure places! The tour starts off at Sentry Hill, former home of the McKinney family and now an intriguing museum. Then it a stop at the old graveyard at Mallusk to hear of servitors, covenanters and rebels. We’ve more memories of ‘98 at Roughfort and pure engineering excellence at Doagh, then we’ll stop off at Kilbride Church before heading on to Ballyclare, Ballynure, and the industrial might that was Mossley Mill. There’s a moment of quiet at Carnmoney Church before we finish the tour at Hazlebank.
You may decide to stop off and explore all of these locations, in which case the tour may take most of a day – just depending on how long you spend at each location. Or you might decide to plan your own route around the sites that interest you most.
Each point is clearly numbered on your map and don’t forget to select the directory function on the map as well. These are on the left of the screen and can be selected or de-selected as you choose more information about the area.
You’ll see some well-known sights, as well as some less well known, and you’ll hear about the rich Ulster Scots heritage of Newtownabbey. And like all the best things in life, some of our destinations require a little time and effort to reach. So be prepared for the weather - and wear a good pair of comfortable shoes! And remember, as you enjoy this scenic route, take care whilst driving.
Plan your route to the next destination before setting off as it is important that you don’t become distracted. Some of the country roads are quite narrow and a little twisty! And there may be a tractor...or a cow, just around the corner.
