About MTA eTix

The MTA eTix app allows customers on MNR’s Hudson, Harlem and New Haven lines and all LIRR branches to purchase tickets on their phones.

--------------------------------------------------------------------------

Never use a vending machine or wait in line again when purchasing your rail ticket for Metro-North Railroad or Long Island Rail Road. Your phone is the ticket machine. Better yet, your phone is the ticket.

With MTA eTix, you can securely purchase One Way, Round Trip, CityTicket, Weekly and Monthly tickets in seconds. Purchasing a ticket is easy: sign up for an account, select your trip, buy your ticket and enter your card information, then activate your ticket just before you board.

Benefits
• Never worry about missing a train while you're stuck in line to buy your ticket
• See all your tickets in your electronic wallet
• 'Punch' your own ticket just before you board
• Never misplace your ticket again
• Take your ticket with you when you upgrade your phone

If you are having issues using the app, please call customer services at 511 for support and ask to speak to a Representative after selecting your railroad. Customers outside NY State call 877 690 5114.

I was hesitant to use this because of all the bad reviews but I haven't had a problem yet. And it sure beats waiting online for a ticket or carrying a ticket altogether.

W70%
by W####:

Suggestion for ticket wallet - custom sorting! If I've got both peak and non peak 10 trips and tickets with different expiration dates, I spend a lot of time scrolling to find the right one. At the very least, please put the tickets expiring first at the front of the list by default.

by S####:

Good idea, but poorly implemented. Would not let me change phones for a month for no apparent reason, since i had no monthly ticket. .. and nowhere to add payment details until you buy

S70%
by S####:

This is nice to be able to purchase tickets without going to the window - great if you are running late. Yet, there should be a widget or notification that can be shown to the conductor. It is really time consuming to bring up the ticket, and even though this is convenient to purchase and not have to worry about carrying one more thing, the paper ticket might be the way to go until a widget or notification is implemented. Please look into this as it needs refinement. If you add that, it will make this app much more user friendly and I would definitely bump up my rating.

by W####:

Useless piece of junk. Does not work with pre-tax transit cards.

L70%
by L####:

Works great! No more rushing to buy or paying on board fees. Work on having it stay on for 15 minutes since the conductors require activation when boarding. Takes the conductor a while to get to riders. If not ready to show they become belligerent.

N70%
by N####:

Excellent no more lines for but my ticket thanks, they have to do the same for the subway in NY they have to create something for have the metrocard in the phone

S70%
by S####:

It works great! I no longer have to get to station early and try to buy a ticket with the sun glare on the screen

Device limit sucks, you can never uninstall app

F70%
by F####:

Awesome

R70%
by R####:

The app signs me out automatically. Then if you re-sign in it uses up a device limit. If you use up those device limits it doesn't let you sign in for almost a month. Perhaps a way for MTA to get more money?

S70%
by S####:

I really liked this app but then discovered that it only allows the purchase of one monthly pass. I take two separate trains everyday and need a monthly pass for each. Kinda silly to have one monthly on my phone and the other in my wallet. Waste of time.

S70%
by S####:

I keep having to log back into my account, and the app tells me I'll be using a device switch. I've been using the same exact phone this whole time. Either remove the device switch, or get better app developers that can identify devices properly please.

V70%
by V####:

It's not such a bad app, really, but Metro North is out of line. They got rid of WebTickets, which could be purchased online in advance at a discount, and replaced them with this stupid app, which costs exactly the same as a ticket from the machines at the stations and leaves you vulnerable to having to pay an even more inflated cash price if something goes wrong with your phone.

J70%
by J####:

It's okay and somewhat convenient. I do like having my ticket digitally but 4 clicks to get there is annoying. Also, if you're going to highlight a 'feature' - monthly and weekly pass holders only activate once and voila! - then make sure the feature actually works. The interface needs to upgraded significantly.

S70%
by S####:

It worked fine the first time but now it keeps telling me to check the card information over and over and over so this app will be getting deleted and I'm going back to carrying my ticket

S70%
by S####:

Worked great for a month, but now won't let me purchase a monthly and keeps giving me an error when I try to make a payment.

W70%
by W####:

"Device switch" error message makes no sense. I'm using the same phone, same SIM, and same battery. Apparently the app will stop working if I get one more error message about this!

I70%
by I####:

Finally! Monthly users no longer have to activate every day. Huge quality of life improvement. This app would be perfect if it automatically opened the last screen when starting the app.

Q70%
by Q####:

For a monthly ticket holder, 98% of usage of this app is displaying the active ticket. Therefore defaulting this app to display the active ticket would save a lot of time for your passengers and your ticket inspectors.

A70%
by A####:

Device limit is poorly implemented. I can't use the app as it thinks I have a new phone every time I factory reset.

E70%
by E####:

I love it. I work only three days a week. It is convenient not to have to pay on train. Don't have to worry about cash. APP has been great for me.

G70%
by G####:

An ugly, slaggish web UI.

S70%
by S####:

Love it. Now if we can only get the LIRR to work as well :-)

S70%
by S####:

Great convenience, but slow

T70%
by T####:

Like this app. Convenience of online tax purchase is great!

C70%
by C####:

The app is about as reliable as the service.

N70%
by N####:

That good

S70%
by S####:

It's ridiculously convenient, but, once you get past the quirks, there's really only one thing that kills it. It really doesn't handle memory well. Unless you sit there with ie app open, and your ticket activated, it will "redraw", meaning reload, if and when you switch tasks. There's nothing more aggravating or embarrassing during rush hour than having to wait for your phone to switch from a text, ebook, game, or whatever, back to your ticket. Either fix the memory leak, or recode active tickets to become widgets.

S70%
by S####:

Super annoyed that you need your card security code each time. Went to purchase this morning and couldn't because obviously I am not carrying that CC. Instead of doing this, why not add a fingerprint or app security code? This is annoying, no clue where my CC is, now have to purchase a ticket back home when I have funds for a monthly on my wageworks CC.

T70%
by T####:

If you remove the app and then reinstall it on your phone this counts as a device switch. Why would that be a good idea? I only install the app when needed but now I have to keep it because you want to restrict others from hacking it? Stupid idea, everyone has a passcode or fingerprint sensor. Utilize that

I70%
by I####:

Unreliable. The app randomly logged me out and I didn't have my password vault, so I was stuck without a ticket wallet in the train. Can't use fingerprint security. Can't use android pay.

C70%
by C####:

It works, so far, but there's some unexpected silliness in an attempt at security features: you have to "activate" your ticket every time you plan to use it (annoying for monthly pass holders), and you need to click 5 times to do so - no shortcut to the obvious action. This app doesn't seem to serve any other purpose than the etix functionality, as far as I can tell so far. If you want any of the "extended" functionality, you'll be taken to a website or to the TrainTime app (or the play store if you don't have it). Seems like a lazy bit of dev work...

S70%
by S####:

You cannot share account with other people. I understand if it was locked to a device during the duration of an unlimited ticket being valid, but a 10 trip is ideal for sharing. Poor judgment and lack of vision.

F70%
by F####:

Pretty nice and very convenient. There doesn't seem to be any way to edit a credit card, though. I had to enter my card in anew in order to change my zip code.

S70%
by S####:

I love everything about this app. The only thing this app needs is to show timetables without redirecting to another app (or even requiring that other app, really). It would be great to see schedules in this app, even if it's just a PDF copy of the printed ones. Otherwise, this is awesome. Definitely a five star experience!

S70%
by S####:

Along with the LIRR train time app, this app now shows tickets as being activated at +6 hours to my current time. It takes forever to load and it takes me 500000 clicks just to get to my ticket and activate it - and I have a monthly pass. I understand the need to activate for data collection purposes but if the activation time is off by 6 hours then the data is useless anyway. Is it more convenient than having a paper ticket? A bit, but not enough to justify the annoyances. Switching to a paper monthly ticket for next month because this is too much of a hassle.

L70%
by L####:

Update: after a second try, for another month, I see that the update claim that "- Monthly and weekly tickets now only need to be activated once" is simply a LIE! The user still needs to "Activate" the monthly ticket every time it's used, and it still takes far too long to prepare the eticket to show it to the conductor. open the app, open the ticket wallet, pick the ticket, then activate/open it. Put a widget on the home screen to display the purchased monthly pass! ONE CLICK! Efficiency is important, and not just for the riders. The conductors now have to use the PA system to beg everyone to have their e-tickets activated and ready because the app is SO SLOW.

W70%
by W####:

Nice to have my ticket on my phone but much like the train time app seems designed to the lowest common denominator of iPhone and Android rather than properly using Android features. Would be nicer if I could shortcut immediately to my monthly tickets in my wallet from a widget or notification bar. Subscribing to monthly tickets is also needed. It's a shame, this could have been a great app, but 4 clicks just to get to my ticket is terrible user interface design. Why should I even have the option to click on a monthly ticket that isn't valid yet?

V70%
by V####:

Twice within a week an activated ticket disappeared while still on the train. And I can't reinstall the app bc the stupid device transfer limit. Going back to paper after this 10 trip is done.
