Herman MELVILLE (1819 - 1891)
Few things, even in literature, can really be said to be unique — but Moby Dick is truly unlike anything written before or since. The novel is nominally about the obsessive hunt by the crazed Captain Ahab of the book’s eponymous white whale. But interspersed in that story are digressions, paradoxes, philosophical riffs on whaling and life, and a display of techniques so advanced for its time that some have referred to the 1851 Moby Dick as the first “modern” novel. (Summary from LibriVox)
Moby Dick pushed you into the world of Ishmael and his best friend as they sail together on a whaling voyage with Captain Ahab. The men learn that Ahab only wants the crew to hunt the white whale that took his leg… the whale he calls Moby Dick. His vengeance leads him only to seek this one whale and not to hunt others. Even though the Captain’s first mate attempts to dissuade him from continuing on this path, they push forward with his plan time and again.
They learn from other ships they meet along the way of the whales whereabouts and hear of other horror stories. The whale has caused much destruction and seems to have a taste for humans! This instills fear in the crew but still they push forward with the Captain’s plan and into a disastrous journey.
