Una expresión (idiom en inglés) es una palabra o frase que tiene un significado figurativo. Esta expresión deriva del uso común en que la palabra/ frase es separada del significado literal o de la definición de las palabras que contiene. Hay unas 25.000 palabras aproximadamente en el lenguaje inglés que sirven a su vez como expresiones idiomáticas.

En la linguística, las expresiones son usualmente presumidas figuras retóricas que contradicen el principio de composicionalidad; de todos modos, esto se mantiene en debate. En la fraseología, son definidas como un sub – tipo de frasema cuyo significado no es la suma regular de los significados de sus componentes.
