El Nuevo Testamento es la parte de la Biblia cristiana compuesta por un conjunto canónico (autorizado) de libros y cartas escritas después del nacimiento de Jesús de Nazaret. Se le designa así desde Tertuliano en la Iglesia cristiana. Al contrario con el Tanaj hebreo, llamado por los cristianos Antiguo Testamento, los cristianos, a excepción de los llamados judíos mesiánicos, no tienen el Nuevo Testamento en común con los judíos.

Se examina el propósito de cada libro, quién fue el autor, cuándo y a quiénes se escribió. Se identifica cuál es el mensaje de cada libro y cómo se relaciona este con los demás.

El uso del término «testamento» proviene del vocablo hebreo berith ('alianza, pacto, convenio o disposiciones entre dos contratantes'), a través del griego diatheké, y del latín testamentum. Algunos autores presentan los nombres Antiguo y Nuevo Testamento con que se designa las dos grandes secciones en que se divide la Biblia cristiana como el resultado de un error de interpretación de la palabra diatheké, que significa: 'deseo' o 'voluntad', y también 'acuerdo’ o 'convenio'.1 Con este criterio diatheké en griego haría referencia al antiguo y al nuevo convenio de Dios con los hombres más que a las Escrituras mismas.

Composición del Nuevo Testamento:

La composición del Nuevo Testamento canónico se fijó poco a poco en los primeros siglos de la nueva religión. La lista más antigua se supone redactada hacia el año 170.
