About AiRM 2013
Art in Romney Marsh (AiRM) offers contemporary visual artists the opportunity to create site specific work in response to the medieval churches of Romney Marsh and their remote wetland location. The work exhibited includes more traditional approaches such as painting, ceramics, drawing and sculpture and extends to experimental work in sound, video, film, digital media and mixed media installations.
The emphasis is on visitors sharing and engaging in the architecture and location in new and exciting ways.
We want to encourage visitors to enjoy experiencing the Romney Marsh through an imaginative artist-led exploration of these magnificent buildings and their equally inspiring landscape.
The AiRM festival benefits greatly by the close proximity of the churches, the sites are within a tranquil, magical and unspoilt 10 mile radius that spans across Denge marsh and into Walland marsh. This area of marshland can be easily accessed by train, road and bicycle, perfect for a day or weekend of relaxing and exploring.
Art in Romney Marsh has become a registered charity this year and has ambitions to increase its profile on the marsh by continuing to provide creative opportunities, initiate artist in residence opportunities, build its educational programme and to continue to support collaborations with musicians and composers.
The idea to set up AiRM came from a visit to Morbihan, Brittany in France in 2002 where we encountered L'Art Dans Les Chapelles (LDLC) an exciting series of contemporary visual art exhibitions in medieval chapels throughout the Morbihan region. This year we have made strong partnership links to LDLC in France and we plan to develop a cross cultural programme with them to include undergraduate and artist exchange opportunities. In 2014 we plan to exhibit French artists who have responded to our creative site specific brief.
The Art in Romney Marsh festival has grown from strength to strength since 2003, with the kind support and permission given by the Romney Marsh area Deanery and their entrusted churchwardens. We are delighted to say that we have gained a dedicated and supportive creative following and that we continue to increase our audience from across Kent, East and West Sussex.
