Comune di Torraca

Il termine Torraca deriva presumibilmente da Torre de Jaco, un signore vissuto a Torraca nei secoli passati.
Poco conosciamo delle sue origini, che sembrano risalire al sec. X d.C. e sono da attribuire a popolazioni di matrice greca.
L’ipotesi più probabile è che furono gli stessi abitanti della costa, distante circa 10 Km dal borgo, spinti dalle devastazioni dei Saraceni nel 915 a rifugiarsi sulle colline e a fondare il nuovo rustico centro abitato.
Durante la guerra del Vespro fra angioini ed aragonesi (1285-1302), l’antico borgo costituì uno dei principali fortilizi angioini dell’entroterra.
Il Cappelli scrive che il santo monaco italo-greco Fantino visse nel Mercurium, ma tra il 951-952 si trasferì a Torraca, dove morì e probabilmente vi sono conservate le sue spoglie.
Nel 1806 il paese subì l’assalto delle truppe francesi, che dettero alle fiamme gran parte dell’abitato e saccheggiarono il Castello Baronale esportandone quadri, statue ed altri oggetti di valore.
Carlo Pisacane nel giugno del 1857, dopo lo sbarco a Sapri, venne a Torraca nella storica piazzetta dell’ Olmo, tenne un famoso discorso, incitando il popolo alla rivolta, nessuno però poté seguirlo nel suo disegno perché ricorreva in quel giorno la Festa di San Pietro, il Santo Patrono. We know little of its origins, which seem to date back to centuries. X A.D. and can be attributed to the Greek roots populations.
The most likely hypothesis is that they were the inhabitants of the coast, about 10 Km from the village, pushed by the ravages of the Saracens in 915 to take refuge in the hills, and to found the new rustic town.
During the Vespers war between Angevin and Aragonese (1285-1302), the ancient town was one of the main strongholds Angevin hinterland.
The Cappelli writes that the saint Italo-greek monaco Fantino lived in Mercurium, but between 951-952 moved to Torraca, where he died and probably you its remains are preserved.
In 1806 the country suffered the assault of French troops, which they set on fire most of the town and looted the baronial castle, exporting pictures, statues and other valuables.
Carlo Pisacane in June of 1857, after landing in Sapri, came to Torraca dell 'Olmo in the historic square, held a famous speech, inciting the people to revolt, but no one was able to follow him in his plan because it appealed in that day the Feast of St. Peter, the patron saint. I still torrachesi showed him the way to get there, without danger, to Fortino.
