Dictionary - Merriam-Webster

Playback is better than before and my vocab is increasing as well. Love this app, especially because I am a heavy reader. I wonder if future versions of the app can work with browsers. If i am reading something online, i know chrome now has web assist if i highlight a word to find the definition. I wish this app can interface with the browser so i can get the definition from here and favorite it if i wish vs copy, open app, paste (or being redirected to google definition of the word.

I'm not sure why app developers hate people that have been using computers longer than they have been alive, but it seems they do. Case in point, when I bring up the search window and type in a word, I expect to be able to hit the Enter key and see my definition. Not with this app you won't. The word you typed disappears and you need to type it again. God help you if you hit the Enter key again. Hey developers! Some us know how to use a keyboard and how to use the Enter key. We even know how to use the Tab key to move around and we can do it a hell of a lot faster than having to type the word, then move the mouse around to click on some on-screen button. Give us our Enter key back!

As a student, a dictionary is very handy, and what I mean of handy is a heavy-free, portable, easy-to-use and I can't forget reference material. Now, thanks to this app, all what I've been looking for a handy dictionary has now been granted. I'll never bring that old-fashioned book again, I'll never get tired of finding and scanning those little words and pages, I'll never forget the words I've previously searched thanks to the "History" menu, and I can always feed my mind up with The Word For the Day.

Wow. There are are just so many adverts in this application! Why so many? It would be such a great application otherwise I'm sure. This is just in the game section, and hopefully the remainder of the application has much fewer adverts than that ~ in which case I would gladly give it a much higher rating. Thanks so much. I chose this application over another similar because I read unfavourable comments about the ads. Yes I have used this application before, but I never had a problem with the ads.

This application is fine that I've been using it since i was in Highschool. But now that it has updated a lot and that i couldn't use it properly because i couldnt find its icon on my phone but it's already installed and been updated! I dont know why but it just disappears. Maybe because of this update stuff. Fix it please before i find something more convinient app. This is actually my favorite one that ive been using a lot that i even brag it to my friends. Oh well.

The mb size is too large now and it won't load the definitions. I'm so frustrated right now cause I really need a dictinoary on my cellphone. Seriously, I really like this app but because of some updates, it's mb became too big for my device to accomodate. If you can lessen the mb, then I will give you 5stars. Please do something about this.

As of late, when I type in a word to look up it's definition, an advertising pop-up is displayed instead that covers the entire screen. I have to click on a very small X in the upper left corner to dismiss the advertisement before I can see the definition of the word. No thanks. I will use a different dictionary.

Best part is the Dictionary & Thesaurus are offline but the sad part is the space the app occupies. It could have been better optimised. Also there is no homescreen widget (with Word of the Day and Random slides of new words) that comes in very handy. Overall the best of the lot!

This is what I was looking for! It's easy to use. Thesaurus section seem fully loaded with related words. The games are good as well. Lastly, thank you for making it free. App developers nowadays should take note of your contribution to the betterment of smartphone users, rather than just sucking up dollar bills.

I love everything about this app. In a year's time I will have learned at least 365 new words which is great. I really love how it will tell you the right way to pronounce the word if you are sure. I can save words I might have had trouble with and I love the three free games. Plus, I am a bad speller so I need this where ever I go.

I consider myself a word connoisseur and I store words that I can reference later. Much to my chagrin, I recently discovered that their is a limit to how many recently looked up words are saved and for some unknown reason this has changed all of a sudden. In fact, not only were all of the words I've been collecting were still in tact the last time I checked, but previous versions of this app had an unlimited capacity for recently searched words. Now older searched words are removed as you searched new ones.

there is a glitch....whenever I minimize the app, use some other app ( book reader)and then restore Merriam Webster I can't search for any word, the drop down list doesn't appear for the word I have typed in...and pressing search doesn't yield any result. I have to close and re launch the app for it to work...if this is solved, the app gets a five star

For some reason, the dictionary constantly pops up the notification that I don't have enough space. I have plenty of space, both on the phone and memory card...Is it the latest update? The app worked perfectly the last time I used it few weeks ago.

This app helps me with my assignments and etc. But can I please suggest that you put in modes like "Night mode" so that at night when we are using the app it will not hurt our eyes in any ways. Thankyou.

This app was near perfect in my opinion before the Feb 11th update. No problems other than some missing words. I'm not sure what exactly changed in the update but since then it takes forever to "load definitions." I can usually wake up my computer, open a browser, and look up the word that way before the app finishes calibrating. I rely on the app for immediate results, so this was a major bummer.

Super useful app! Everyone hates ads, but sometimes you just can't provide a service without them. Keep up the good work! Would the developer be willing to add the word of the day as a push notification?

You know yours is the best dictionary out there. But to make it unmatched, you should add one more feature. Being able to select and search directly from any page, so that the hassle of typing and searching be minimised.

In your few of the recent updates, you had mentioned that the "loading definitions" issue was solved, but it is not solved on my phone. Almost a minute goes every time in that setup of definitions. I use a Moto G2 with OS-Android 6.0. This is the only thing that refrains me from giving 5 starts

It keeps telling me I don't have enough storage space while I so do. For that reason it has made up for itself, it won't load anything. There are also times it does work, though, but still with no thesaurus.

I used to love it and recommend this app. Now I'm uninstalling, and please let me know if it works again in next updates. Or even if it downgraded. This version is totally non useful!! :(

Well, this dictionary not only provide the meaning of words but also provides history data associated with that word with synonyms & antonyms . It also provides 'word of the day' section,usage of the word in a form of sentence, favorite section where you can keep particular words separately. Games like 'vocabulary ', 'true or false' ,'naming that thing ', with a voice recognizer , a word pronouncer & a thesaurus . Not to forget that all these facilities are totally offline. (Excluding voice recognizer).

Seriously guys? Maybe you folks are working hard to get things perfect and run smoothly but this recent update is doing the opposite. Check it out. Again the problem of loading definitions and i had to wait for a minute or two for to use the app. SEE TO IT AND RECTIFY THE PROBLEM

I wonder what kind of definitions you have developed that it doesn't fit in my 19.42 GB remaining internal memory and 54 GB SD Memory. Every time I open the app it says loading definitions and after ages it says sorry not enough storage clear memory. What a useless message!

I am always in need of getting hold a dictionary for I am a reader of books. And most of the time, big words appears between sentences. Thanks for this wonderful application for helping me to find each word meaning. This is simply amazing.

As a free app, this dictionary has just about every word you should need in the general business realm. Although there may not be some words from 100-150 years ago--an age of more expansive language-- there is enough for you to find this a very helpful writing tool.

A veritable cornucopia of exceptional semantic and syntactic reference and fortuitous serendipity. There is the danger of drowning among vast reefs of synonyms. For the sake of us all, try to abstain from unnecessary complexification. (Yes, that is an actual word. Look it up!)

We would highly appreciate a daily notification of the word of the day. I do not believe you have that feature just yet, unless I am mistaken?

It works great when it works, but unfortunately often it doesn't work. It takes an unholy long time to load on my phone, which makes it rather unusable if I just want a quick definition for a new word. Often I just end up going to Google instead... Switching between dictionary and thesaurus also takes longer than it should.

Just have a look at the Typing Widget feature of the "QUICK DICTIONARY" developed by WORD SNITCH. Its an app on play store. Just get The Merriam Webster imbued with this feature and it will be impeccable. You know what I mean.

I like it, but I wish I could turn the volume up & down. Also, it would be great if it had a HELP feature to help you navigate this app to find what you're looking for more easily.

Before the major update (the games and the interface change), it had no problems with speed. Now, when I enter a few letters, it takes several seconds (and sometimes several several seconds) before suggestions appear. It sucks cause it happens most of the time, and when I need it most too. Hope you fix it!

Good app easy to use and the best thing about this dictionary is the voice recognition it's great for us lazy people who can't spell and don't typing especially when spellchecker can't figure out what your trying to say. Would be 5

Yeah'! I found this app useful as compared to other 1...and the best part in this app is that it explain words in so familiar way or I should say in the easiest way... Only 1 problem I often faced that explanation of some of the words are so surly...

This app is good but still needs to have a sync feature so as to save the data on the internet to prevent data loss due to any accidental happening. And ads are always annoying you know, lesser the better!

New update has a scrolling problem where you can't see all search results, only the first 20. Looks nice, and love the ability to use without internet!

To allow everyone to have this resource for free is unbelievable. There is no other defence for the American in a world ruled by Oxford and Cambridge. Without Merriam Webster I would have no defence. My only gripe is the about-info usually found in the front/back pages of the paper version , is not included in this app. That pronunciation information is extremely important. Please include it in future versions.

But hey? İ need some help at the moment. İt immediately closes down(within 2-3seconds) when i open it. What might be the problem?

This new version is better. My children enjoy the games while learning new vocabulary. Thenni learn how to pronounce unfamiliar words with the help of the audio. Very handy too. Have installed it in my children's cp too and they find it VERY helpful.
