About GPS Logger for Android

A lightweight, battery efficient GPS Logger. The purpose of this app is to log your GPS coordinates at specified intervals to a file on your SD card. This app runs in the background so that you can on a long walk, hike, flight ride or photo session or even go buy some milk and have this running as long as possible. Once you're back at your computer, you can then use the files to geotag photos, upload to travel sites, view in Google Earth and so on.

***Features:

* Specify time intervals
* Specify distance intervals
* Cell phone tower or GPS satellites
* Log to GPX, KML, CSV or NMEA files
* Shows a notification
* Imperial display units
* Auto start on boot
* Auto send to email/FTP/DropBox/Google Docs/OpenStreetMap/OpenGTS at intervals
* OpenStreetMap - upload GPS traces
* Dropbox - upload GPX/KML/ZIP/TXT
* Google Docs - upload GPX/KML/ZIP/TXT
* OpenGTS - auto send or upload points

Bugs, feature requests, questions - please submit them to github.com/mendhak/gpslogger (issue tracker).

***Notes:

GPSLogger is not a MyTracks replacement. MyTracks is meant for short use (as it has a lot of features running), GPSLogger is meant to last a long time.

A data connection is used by this app only if you use auto-email or OpenStreetMap or Dropbox features.

Although the app allows 0 second frequencies, it is not recommended as the recording and logging is happening very fast; this could cause instability/hangs. Try 1-3 seconds instead.

If there's a feature that you feel the app should have, you can submit a feature request on the github site.

***Explanation of permissions:

Storage - reading and writing files to the GPSLogger folder on your SD card

Network communication - used when uploading the files (Dropbox, Openstreetmap) or sending emails or authorizing you with Dropbox, Openstreetmap

Your location - used to determine your GPS or tower based location

System tools (automatically start at boot) - used if you choose to start GPSLogger on bootup

Your accounts - used when authorizing against Google Docs and when uploading to Google Docs

Activity recognition - to recognize when phone is still and to pause logging

Using this to send every minute my gps coords to an server (as long movement is detected to save on the battery) which send it to an mqtt server to which homeassistant is connected so it know if i enter/leave zones. Running it like that since weeks and works flawless.

Latest update is apparently not optimised for my Samsung Galaxy tablet running android 4.1.2. Unable to update my OS I believe. Hoping it still works - or I'll be uninstalling.

by N####:

Great app with a minor bug. On Note 8 the setting to avoid notifications does not work. Workaround: block the app in android settings.

N70%
by N####:

Very useful app with a lot of track saving palaces and track preferences. All features look like author thinks what he does and doesn't implement it just for fun. Real developer! Thanks a lot for nice app!

Overall it' works welll. Wish there is a navigation compass for navigation back to saved waypoints

Altitude is way off.

Simple, lightweight, and easy to use. Works with Battery Saving Location as well as High Accuracy GPS (plenty accurate for me in battery saving more). All you have to do is share the autosaved .gpx file to your PC with Bluetooth, then use Geosetter (or another software) to auto sync the track file with your pictures.

Works great. In Android 8 there is now no way to not hide that it is running. Seems to be a new notification which tells you apps are running and that can only be snoozed for 2 hrs at most.

N70%
by N####:

Works great for me. Would be better if it comes with a map view. It's easy to get lost in the woods without OSM…

N70%
by N####:

Unfortunately it does not work with my Samsung S8. It starts logging but then there are huge gaps in the log file. Not sure if this is a Samsung problem or the software's fault.

Works great at low impact logging to Dropbox. Can't seem to get it to upload to OpenStreetMaps

Allows you to gather every GPS signal received. Great for many uses!

Great app. Lightweight and efficient. Needs to implement Oreo APIs to remove the persistent notification.

If screen is off, then nothing is logged (gps is teporarily unavailable)

I hate to give this app a bad rating. It used to work great on my Galaxy S7. Now it logs 5-10 points before stopping. It's whitelisted in the battery saving settings. Don't know what to do to make it work again.

N70%
by N####:

This app and others may be stop logging in backgound on huawei phones because huawei's power management app called power genie may stop GPS background apps even when you select ignore power optimization the only solution is i rooted my device then removed the system powergenie app

Y70%
by Y####:

Intuitive interface with many useful options. Battery consumption is minimal when logging is infrequent and accuracy isn't essential. High frequency and accuracy is also an option, it all depends on your needs. Plus, no ads or premium features.

E70%
by E####:

It never recorded the tracks properly. Recording only 3 or 4 points on a long journey. Samsung A3 with no power saving active.

F70%
by F####:

No problems with recording but unless I'm missing something there's no way to view recorded logs in the app, they have to be uploaded somewhere. It would be handy to see the list, ideally with summary details and a map, and be able to open them in a GPX viewer. Also a time/speed/distance summary with big text would be useful when cycling - the simple view is too small.

V70%
by V####:

When exporting to csv the time stamps are all messed up. Also the app just stops running in the background after a short while. Tested on galaxy s7

Z70%
by Z####:

Must start/stop logging if gps signal is lost for a long period and doesn't handle switching between cell and gps. Disappointing.

G70%
by G####:

When trying to share the log it only shows option for location and to different date files, not the current date!

WARNING: to get email from thus app you need to give them the password to your email service. DO NOT BE THAT STUPID OR THEY CAN F UP YOUR WHOLE LIFE.

N70%
by N####:

For some reason doesn't work for me. When driving in the city, it recorded only 14 points on the distance of 22 km. I checked all the settings - it should be recording every 30 seconds, GPS was fine.

S70%
by S####:

Edit: Have had to downgrade. Log stops if GPS signal lost momentarily. Doesn't log consistently when in the background. Unreliable.

Since a few days the kml file is not working anymore. Kml script before was : and now it's a mistake that it adds points in format .... please fix that than 5 start again, otherwise it's useless

Great app, works ok mostly. Just wish to have settings export/import feature, as amount of setting is quite big to customize. And also will be good to have a cache for "log to custom url", so when i lost internet connection gps points will be store to cache (buffer), and when the interten connection became active all past gps points will be uploaded, so when i am not having the internet connetion i will not loose the gps track.

Nice app, but has two issues: 1) it does not accept user entered description. I have set up automatic upload to OSM after tapping on "Stop" and default description. During capturing today's tracklog I customized the description (using the pencil icon in the left bottom corner) to something else to see whether it will be used. Now I see on my OSM account that it has not, the file has the usual default description. 2) often duplicates uploaded files. I have just returned from lunch, I made three tracklogs. Two of them were duplicated. Well, it comes to my mind now that I ended two tracklogs at places with wi-fi (remembered in my phone). So maybe after pressing "STOP" it uploaded the tracklog using LTE, then the phone switch to the wi-fi and for whatever reason the GPSLogger repeated the transfer. Just an idea, mayby that's not what happened. Going to observe it closely.
