Memrise: Learn Languages Free for Android
I fell in love with the South Korean culture when I came across Kdramas about 4 years ago. From watching them continuously since then I can recognize alot of the words and understand certain things they say without needing to read the English captions. But I wanted to learn more I wanted to be able to understand and speak Korean fluently. I found this app and I am already amazed at how quickly I am learning from this. Thank you for creating this app now I should be ready for my trip to South Korea one day. :)
It's a great app. I am using the Memerise french courses and they are great. Just beware of the user created courses. I tried one and they were full of errors in terms of word translation and pronunciation. I use this program along with duolingo ( just completed the duo french course) and both programs complement each other really well. <3 :)
The thing where it tells you how many days in a row you did it glitches a lot and I just did it before midnight and it said I only did it 2 days in a row instead of about 9. Other than that it runs smoothly. Update: Kind of angry now, did it again and it's only 11 pm and it said one day again. Did this yesterday when I had another 12 day streak. Not satisfying and it kind of pisses me off.
It's very limited in the free version. I completed 4 different languages and they are extremely limited in the free version. One had only 4 words and 12 letters. Another had only 20 letters. It seems very deceitful based on the ratings received. The paywall you encounter stopped me from using this app. I wish instead it was just showing you 2 words a day and the pay version would let you learn unlimited.
This is an amazing app and I am happy with how fast I am learning korean... but when it makes me chat with the other person thing on the little bit about you, I just feel awkward and its not for me this is why I gave only four stars. Please make a way to were we can not have to do the chat and turn it back on if we want to. Thank you so much for this app though!
I'm a big fan of Kpop and Kdramas, so I've always been interested in learning Korean but I didn't know where to start. I tried reading and studying from textbooks and charts online, but nothing was really clicking. This app is amazing and is the best thing short of taking an elementary Korean class. Plus, I can use it whenever I'm bored or on the go. And the games make it really fun!! I would recommend this app for anyone who's looking for an easy and fun/low-pressure way to learn a new language!
Learning Japanese! Fantastic use of spaced repetition to reinforce content. perfect course design, starting with Romanji, the gradually mixing in the hiragana at the same time as adding new words to my vocabulary. Duolingo missed out, cuz now I'm hooked on Memrise!
I would've really enjoyed this if there were a little more to explore. As a beginner in learning a new languages is hard enough so using the "free" part of the app should atleast have beginner stage usage to give us "beginners" the chance to see if the app will be helpful. Don't get me wrong ... I can almost bet that if I bought the full app I would thoroughly enjoy it. But again, it's an ALMOST feeling. I'm still unsure if the app is worth putting money into when I start from learning how to say words to guessing the written language. Guessing isn't learning to me. It's literally guessing. I should be able to get the language alphabet to start with atleast. So this makes me feel uneasy about wanting to really use the app to the fullest. As someone who would continue to use this app .... $180 is a steep price for not knowing if you could actually learn something. Although ... Again. I did enjoy it somewhat .
Awesome app and i like it much better than duolingo. I'm even considering becoming a paid member. The only downside is the speed review is too fast and i barely have time to read long phrases, often only last words of the longer ones. There should be more time for them and less time for single words or very short phrases.
Been wanting to learn for almost 20 years. Went to Japan when I was 15 in 2005 and I so wish smartphones and this app were a thing back then. Not happy I had to pay to go past level 1 but it's worth it.
I'd recommend fixing the Japanese, its kinda only good for learning the writing systems, and when it shows kanji it never shows you how I pronounce it. I've seen a few sentences etc that weren't correct also Wow now you have to pay for the second lesson, I'm done
so far i tried korean and chinesd and i loved the way you start learning the language (and the fact that there are more languages than in dualingo) and the learning process is really fun. I was considering buying a month pass but I'm not so sure anymore because of the mems which are one of the most important things in this app and yet are so messy... most of them are useless or unclear/made just to mess with people. someone should check them because since everyone can add them they're pretty stupid
I absolutely love this app, right now I'm trying out mandrin, I do not have any background with this language whatsoever and I'm on day 2 and I feel as if I'm learning something. It's a great way to get someone to remember what is being taught. Remember the memory game growing up? This is it but just another language. Try it
Subscribe yesterday so I can meet the native and download offline course. Too bad there's is some limitations with the first one. But my biggest disappointment is download problem with offline course. I'm never succeed download it. Waiting for your respond memrise.
I've always struggled with learning languages as it's been taught one set way. This way you can see it visually, read it, write it and hear it. Its easy to remember the English word along side the other language. I'm learning Japanese and it's very helpful in that it tells you were you're going wrong and helps to get you back on track. Love the daily log too :)
I like much about the app! The look and feel is very pleasant, and the pace of the lessons makes much more sense to me than DuoLingo's pace. There is also the Easter sale going on for the full service which I may take advantage of - however! It is not clear what the full service gives me above the already good app, and I have to remove a star from my rating because I get reminder after reminder about the sale: one or two reminders before I start each lesson today. This is too many reminders! One reminder per visit to the app, and I would more likely buy the sale.
I am using multiple learning apps right now and have purchased Rosetta Stone in the past at a high price. If you purchase at least a pro membership of memrise it allows you to use listening skills and difficult words and that makes it the best learning app I've ever experienced. Its also great in the free version, but I love listening skills. It's much more effective than other methods at a fraction of the cost. $45 per year is $3.75 a month! Currently successfully learning Japanese, German, and Spanish!
I really like this app! It's super helpful for my Korean course in school for vocab memorization and pronounciation! Unfortunately the payment after Day 1 is something I can't do so it was a short-lived fun, but I bet it's a really good app in the long run for those who can pay for it~
My weakness has always been remembering vocabulary. I have tried various textbooks, flashcards, and other apps but this one has been the most effective for me personally! It made me excited for language learning again!
Inappropriate tests give ambiguous possibilities and no time to read the answers. E.g. When a sound is played I hear 'ta' both 'ta katakana' and 'ta hiragana' must be right. Also the tests come with long sentences which are impossible to read during speed test.
Taking some time to get used to the interface. I find it a little bit confusing right now, but I'm quite happy with the way it forces you to learn the basics compared to other language apps. I'd love to learn how to identify the Japanese alphabet as well though!
Free language learning? Sign me up. Havent used it much because I'm a procrastinator but so far this app is brilliant for learning another language! What's can you complain about, IT IS FREE!
don't like the forced chatting. the buttons to go to next and confirm your answer are in the same position, so you end up hitting confirm after going to the next question inadvertantly. everything else is fine
Excellent for fast learning! Starts at the basics and slowly increases in difficulty - making it very simple to remember. New words and phrases are frequently gone over so they stay in your memory.
I used the free part to work on Japanese. The free part is too limited, the words are not commonly used, (choushi wa dou, ikou) or wrong (the game says that 'konnichiwa' means 'hello', but it actually means 'good day') and the game penalizes you for simple spelling issues like using a single 'n' rather than two when writing Japanese words.
Was a very good app until they forced you to go pro, things that were once free ain't no more! I wouldn't recommend this app to anyone unless they are willing to pay £18 a month or year what ever it was again, you can only do 2 sections on Japanese!!!
Thanks to Memrise I'm now a geography expert! It's a great app that helps you a lot with memory ; ) Despite the excellent quality of the app, however, it shuts down ALOT which is quite irritating, especially when I'm in the middle of the session. Please fix this. Overall, Memrise is very benefitial although there are a few faults.
Learned many things through this app and I actually try to get on top of other users all the time like I am in a competition to get a 1st rank in my class. Its helpful and sharpens my brain.
+This is a great app. I love the innovation that comes every now and then. -I would like to be able to customize a bit more my goal for every course and not in general for all of them. - I would like to be able to give feedback on wrong answers or alternatives
Great for those sources, facts, dates, journals and opinions that you need to remember for both college and university revision. Works perfectly to help you remember. Advertising deals is creeping in and becoming slightly more annoying however.
I am using this app for learning Japanese. Initially I loved this app and even bought the pro version. But very shortly I released its shortcomings. First of all, there are some errors in actually translations of some words. Secondly, the app doesn't try teaching you much about kanji. They don't teach you on how to pronounce kanji and neither do they even try incorporating the taught kanji in the lessons. As kanji is an integral part of japanese, it should be given more importance. It becomes frustrating in later stages when long sentences are still being written entirely in kana.
I really enjoyed this to learn Japanese, so I suggested my friend try it out since she is also learning but everything is locked for her. That's really frustrating because we wanted to learn together and we refuse to pay $50. It isn't worth it.
Really entertaining. Update to the developer 04/18/2017: In Mandarin Chinese 1 "I like tea" has the wrong audio. "Ni bu xihuan cafe" means I don't like coffee. Please change it.
Ive been learning german and french at a young age and this has really helped. Maybe teach the numbers of the language at the start. I was really impressed with how it worked and ive expanded my volcabulary . but sometimes i find the mems a bit unuseful if memrise could add their own mems that would be great ☺great app
Well gamified learning experience. To follow up on the image, I'd like to be able to increase the difficulty. I wouldn't mind getting a less perfect score if it meant I could learn more new stuff.
This is a great app to learn words but when it comes to the conversations it mainly gives you words that you haven't learnt yet. How am you ment to know what to reply when you haven't taught me them yet. Seems a bit pointless.
I'm using this to learn Japanese right now, and so far it's fun and I find myself actually learning. The app offers little phrases input by other users to help remember how some words are formed. I don't know how far into the language it can take me before I have to find some other medium, but so far,, as a beginner, it's perfect.
It's a really friendly app that goes over the words multiple times to help you remember better, which really helps me a lot. Teaches you in different ways and you can review the words often and let it know which ones you might be struggling with.
Showed a useless "engagement" notification of just wave emojis. Instant uninstall. Don't bother my day when it isn't necessary.

The most flexible language app I've used. Memrise helped me push myself and begin learning Japanese. Not only Japanese, it does have the solution for all problems with the variety it provides to its users with lots of topics and languages to learn. The features are great, all of them inspiring to make myself work in the real world. I couldn't have asked for anything better. Thank you, Memrise! :)
