About Stagefright Detector

The Stagefright Detector app by Lookout determines if your Android device could be susceptible to the Stagefright 1.0 vulnerability. To ensure your device has the most up-to-date protection against a wide variety of attacks, including Stagefright, download the Lookout Mobile Security app.

Stagefright Detector scans your device to determine whether you are affected by the Stagefright 1.0 vulnerability and provides you with practical advice on how to protect yourself and your device, such as immediately installing any patch from your carrier or OEM and disabling MMS auto-fetch in your default messaging app until your device is patched.

More about Stagefright:

■ What is the Stagefright vulnerability?

The Stagefright vulnerability refers to a critical vulnerability that was discovered last week in the Stagefright library, an open source media player used by 95% of Android devices. The vulnerability is particularly troublesome because it can be delivered via MMS, which is automatically downloaded to the Android device by default, giving a potential attacker the ability to remotely control and steal data from the device. Currently there is no evidence that these exploits are being used in the wild. The Stagefright vulnerability affects any Android device running Froyo 2.2 to Lollipop 5.1.1 and has been documented with the following reference numbers: CVE-2015-1538, CVE-2015-1539, CVE-2015-3824, CVE-2015-3826, CVE-2015-3827, CVE-2015-3828, CVE-2015-3829.

■ Will Stagefright Detector fix the Stagefright vulnerability?

Stagefright Detector is designed to keep you informed about the status of your device.
Stagefright Detector will not fix the vulnerability, because the vulnerability can only be fixed once a patch is released by Google, your carrier or your device manufacturer, which typically is delivered through a System Update. To check if a patch is available for most Android devices, go to Settings and click System Updates.

What's Changed
This release improves the accuracy of the Stagefright Detector, which could mean that some devices previously identified as not vulnerable may now be considered vulnerable. If this is the case on your device, we recommend that you disable MMS auto-retrieval using the directions found in the app.

What are users saying about Stagefright Detector

N70%
by N####:

i don't see the point in downloading this app. all it told me was everything i already knew from my network provoder. all the app said was my phone is vulnerable (isn't everyone's basically?), turn off auto retrieve, and when an update is available to download it. by the description i thought it was a little extra protection, but i guess it's just to tell you you're S.O.L. till the update, which i already knew. ended up just deleting the app, there's no point in having it. lookout however is a must.

N70%
by N####:

I tested several other Stagefright detectors and they all still say my device is vulnerable. Lookout is the only one telling me my device is fine and no longer vulnerable. I thought this was an either/or thing with this bug. Either your device is fully patched or it isnt.

C70%
by C####:

Now it shows my phone is vulnerable when it didn't before last update. Still will prefer Zimperium version since they found the vulnerability in the first place so they have the best way of detecting Stagefreight

F70%
by F####:

it doesn't change, update, alter, reconfigure or anything other than DETECT. if you want to know if your device is vulnerable - use this. if you want to know if updates done to your phone patched these vulnerabilities - use this. if you want to look like an idiot - don't read the apps description and then b*tch about it doing exactly what its description says it will.

N70%
by N####:

Hey everyone. This is a detector, not a remover. Don't give it bad ratings because it's doing what it is supposed to be doing. The only way to prevent the virus, for now, is to disable mms. If your phone is vulnerable, than its vulnerable. Mine is too. Until we get the fix sent to us by the manufacturer or provider, we all will be vulnerable. This helps DETECT if our mms has the virus. Let me know if I'm wrong, lookout folks.

Great app that helps the user deal with stagefright vulnerability in an informed manner. Even if your phone is vulnerable, this app allows you to minimize your risk while waiting for an update fix for this vulnerability, in which case this means that if you're unwilling to put in a little work like reading and making adjustments yourself, then you won't get much out of this app.

J70%

This app gave to me a "secure device" evaluation but using other detectors they say I'm still vulnerable (i.e. ESET) don't trust a negative result check other apps.

N70%
by N####:

Version 1.1 does not detect CVE-2015-3864. So you're probably still vulnerable to Stagefright. Get Zimperium's app for accurate results.

Didn't detect patches, tried to scare me into buying their full product. Avoid

I checked this last week after just updating to latest release of lollipop and it said I was fine. After updating this AND LOOKOUT SECURITY APP..SAYS I'M VULNERABLE NOW!! WTF ARE YOU GUYS DOING??!! I just had my wife test with version before this update. ..all was OK...update this app and bam..you're vulnerable. She has latest OS also..You guys are full of it. And F those saying "read". $marta$$es don't know $hit.

Excellent App. Remains current with the virus; as the virus evolves & poses new threats, the app informs us whether or not we are vulnerable. I'm glad I have your Antivirus software to help keep me safe while waiting for new software &/or hardware update patches from my particular device's manufacturer. Thanks Devs, I appreciate all the time & effort you spend on this project. Keep up the great work!!

C70%
by C####:

This detector tool is not accurate when detecting stagefright vulnerabilities. This app showed everything was good. The Zimperium app showed there were 2 vulnerabilities in the red. I ran both of them on the same phone. I have a Samsung Galaxy S4. I just got my Samsung software update today to fix the vulnerabilities and now I am in the clear. Use the Zimperium app.

I installed this yesterday. It has used 114mb of my mobile data. It took 3mb to download under play but then downloaded 104mb on its own and uploaded 10.7mb. What is in the 104mb that only tells me I'm vulnerable and does not even cure it? Worse, what is in the 10mb you stole from me and why do you need it?

C70%
by C####:

I think this app is either broke of it is being used to get people to download and install lookout. It reports my device as vulnerable. I've been asking T-Mobile when that were going to fix it. It so happens that the fix was pushed two months. This piece of crap software continues to report vulnerable and has caused undue stress by tricking me into thinking I was vulnerable when I was not. Good thing that I don't need it any more but causes me to question the accuracy of Lookout's other apps.

G70%
by G####:

Outdated and should specify which exact exploits are being tested. Just saying either vulnerable or not vulnerable isn't specific enough. Tell us exactly which exploits you're testing, and which passed or failed. This app currently does not support/test CVE-2015-3864, CVE-2015-3876, or CVE-2015-6602. So it can (and will) give you a false positive. Thus leading people to believe they're safe, when they're really not!!!

C70%
by C####:

There's something I don't get. The detector says that my phone is vulnerable to stagefright, but I turned off the mms receiver for messages, and I also checked for a software update. Also, the Mobile Security app says everything is fine on my phone. Is my phone just out of date? Or is there something wrong with the app maybe?

C70%
by C####:

This app said I am vulnerable, update my device and disable mms. Prior to running this app auto mms was disabled and I just received the newest update last week. I think it is more about awareness than actually fixing anything.

So I have a rooted Verizon note 3. I use custom Rom so I confirmed with this app that I was vulnerable. Installed the fix that is on xda forums. Ran app again, no longer vulnerable. Thank you lookout. I use your regular anti virus app too.

C70%
by C####:

So it turns out that I'm not vulnerable but it also told me that I have gonorrhea. I was like "Again?" and it was like "Oh please, don't act so surprised. You've suspected something's up ever since the bathhouse/scathouse in Mexico City." So therefore I recommend it for everybody(the app that is, not the scathouse).

M70%

Well this sucks along w/ finding out I have a chance 2 get this (much love 4 the heads up). But I have a chance of getting cancer, a chance of getting Meningitis. My point untill the some1's that can do something about any of this do. It seems technology is just another thing that gives u stress over "the can gets" I dont remember old phones giving me this stress & my camera worked fine 2. Oh & best 4 last. Remember that t.v. & radios where made 2 promote ads! Now we pay 4 them or pay 2 not see em?! CRA??

C70%
by C####:

Hey am I at risk if I have a non active phone? Because I can't receive messages because I'm not activated therefore does that mean I'm not at all vulnerable? Because I got this pop up on the avg app talking about this stage fright virus. And how it only sent through mms (messages) but since I'm not activated idk. But why would i receive that thing from avg??? I'm confused. Help me.

C70%
by C####:

Although it would simplify everything to have one app for all your security needs when it comes to living in the real world.

W70%
by W####:

All stagefright detectors are useless. There is no fix from these moronic apps. The app makers are hyperbolic beyond all reason and offer essentially nothing. Take a pass.

T70%
by T####:

Remember this app cannot fix the problem, it takes Google to do that. OTOH, It did exactly what it was designed to do. It found my phone vulnerable and instructed me to get the system update. I did that and the app found my phone no longer vulnerable. Kudos to the developers for this type of security response.

B70%
by B####:

As far as this app is concerned, it doesn't care about ur security. Its up to U the User to be aware. It was a week or more late to notify its users about the stagefright virus, & then left it up the user to install its fix as a seperate app. Instead of including it in an update. Very unprofessional. The only reason I have it, is because it comes with my cellfone provider's PKG. Well, enough Said for NOW!

Z70%
by Z####:

I came up 'vulnerable', downloaded and installed a system update, changed the MMS setting and still vulnerable. The greater problem is that Stagefright/Lookout doesn't provide any further help in resolving the vulnerability. I guess I'm SOL. Uninstalling the app. Hopefully Lookout app will catch the virus when it comes to my phone.

My cornflakes taste worse, and gets soggey morefaster. Needs updated so i kan eat my cronflaks an like em again like b4 i got dis game, it not phun. (Sorry, I just had to do this lol)

C70%

Tells me I am vulnerable to this threat tells me to turn off my mms auto recieve. But doesn't tell me if I am infected or how to protect against it...Doesn't matter if the discription says it's a detector when u trust a app like lookout it took me to download so you don't think of needing to read it. Useless pointless app. My rating stands

C70%
by C####:

Version 1.1 does not detect CVE-2015-3864. So you're probably still vulnerable to Stagefright. Get Zimperium's app for accurate results.

This didn't tell me anything I didn't already know. Maybe if Lookout could tell if I've been hacked or block malicious media, it would be useful, but this is dumb.

D70%
by D####:

The description of the app explains that prior releases of this detector detected a few false negatives. The latest release has the ability to detect new vulnerabilities to Stage fright. The next thing people need to be aware of is that this is intended to detect if the OS on the device is vulnerable. Yes, if your device is vulnerable, it will continue to report it is vulnerable until such time your device is patched. Taking steps will prevent the vulnerability being exploited, but will not remove it.

D70%
by D####:

I have a new galaxy s6 with all latest versions of software installed . After following all instructions correctly and correctly shutting off my MMS and installing their full security program I am still getting false negative reports of stage fright! This makes the application even though it is just a stage fright detector worthless and unreliable... Just my humble opinion.

This app help A LOT to know it my device is vulnerable I have 2 phone one Note 3 with CyanogenMod and the second a LG phone I thought a custom Rom will be highly vulnerable but it is not vulnerable I think is because it get nightly built update the LG phone is vulnerable, thanks so much developer this app is awesome and it help a lot, will tell friends about this app.

R70%
by R####:

It says my phone is vulnerable, that means it CAN get it? Of course, any android CAN get it. So are you telling me this app just checks to see if you have mms auto enabled? Why doesn't it say "you are not infected" so do I have it or not. A detector should not leave me asking if I have it!

D70%
by D####:

I've already downloaded the new Android OS which has slowed down everything and messed up my apps. I've already turned off auto retrieve. Yet it tells me I'm vulnerable. Why?

D70%
by D####:

This app told me I was vulnerable, and when I went to turn off mms auto-fetching I noticed there was a stage fright security option. So if you're at risk I would recommend installing textra and making it your default messaging app

D70%
by D####:

I tested several other Stagefright detectors and they all still say my device is vulnerable. Lookout is the only one telling me my device is fine and no longer vulnerable. I thought this was an either/or thing with this bug. Either your device is fully patched or it isnt.

D70%
by D####:

Does what it says it does, warned me I followed their advice, changed mms auto retrieval to off. All I await now is a service provider update from either HTC or o2.
