About KitKat Media Rescan Widget

Please note, this widget requires ROOT access, explicitly for Android KitKat 4.4+, since media re-scan now requires system level access as of KitKat.

Did you just adb push a bunch of new media files (images / music) to your SDCARD but not seeing them in your gallery app, etc? Don't want to thumb through your app drawer to launch an application to initiate a re-scan? Don't want a force close when / if you do launch?

Give 'Media Rescan Widget' a try! It's the quickest and easiest way to initiate a re-scan of your media files.

Simply add the 2x2 widget to your home screen, grant root privileges after your initial launch, and enjoy an up to date gallery!

Note, this is a widget only, there is NO application icon that will appear in your app drawer.

To add as a widget to your home-screen, look for 'Media Rescan' in your 'choose widget' list.

If you do not have root, the widget, when clicked, should exit gracefully with a message stating 'root is required' and as a result, your media / gallery will not be updated. No need to download / install if you do NOT have root, as the widget will not provide any value.

As noted by another reviewer, the widget size could be smaller. But it's still a 5/5 in my book! Thanks!!!

Use this app to force re-scan media library at my SGS5. Without it the only way to make files appear in the gallery was to restart my device. Now vidget is 1x1 and looks nice, but big request to developer: please add possibility to install app in Apps, not only as widget.

This is primarily widget. Control over what it scans, and how, is unclear.

Works like a charm on my rooted phone. Simple and effective. A short while after you tap it all the new files that were still invisible after their creation by an app become visible in Windows Explorer or other file managers on Windows over a USB MTP connection. I don't even have to refresh (F5 in Windows) or anything. The files just pop up.

Kindly update it with a better animated widget to make this useful tool aesthetically brilliant. Also, it would be nicer if you will be able to add a Notification Progress Bar showing % regarding the rescan process

But the widget size could be 1x1 instead of that annoying unnecessary size of 2x2. Without that size I'd give it 5 stars

I tried more than a dozen of these apps and none of them worked at all on my Samsung Galaxy S5 mini running stock Android 4.4.2 (rooted). My use case: I often move/delete/add pictures and videos to different folders and the gallery app still shows thumbnails of non-existent images. A reboot will kick off the media scanner and update the gallery correctly. But I wanted to achieve the same thing without rebooting. This is the only app so far that works as expected. Just launch the widget, wait some time, reopen the gallery and all thumbnails are again in sync. Great work! Thank you very much! The only thing I don't understand is: Why a widget? It just uses space on my home screen and I can't use it like I could with a shortcut. I would appreciate very much if I could also have a simple shortcut (which I can use together with "multicon"). +1 star more for a shortcut.

Solved a big problem on MTP! And the widget is really ugly (笑)。。

Is useful for me as I often manipulate files via SFTP on my device and this confuses the media scanner. I would like to echo many other reviews in saying that I would like to be able to launch the process from an app and that the widget seems unnecessarily large.

Does exactly what it says it will do. Only thing missing is an icon to initiate the scan.

I suppose it works, so 4 stars. but it needs progress and end-of-process indicators.

You need to root and also run sdfix. The people in Google: we'll never give up the sd card! Even if it means not installing your updates any more!

This app does not need root to do this! Beware! All reviews are from one of 2 dates, and have similar fake names. Reported! Edit: In response to author reporting me for this, as he says, "idiotic" review: No good author would report one of their reviewers. Secondly, "SD Scanner" by Jeremy Erickson can do this function WITHOUT root on KitKat, so your statement that root is required is defunct. Also, SD Scanner has more downloads and better support. DO NOT TRUST THIS APP! I recommend full reset of your Android if you have allowed this app root. Edit 2: You know, if you were not accusing me from the getgo and instead trying to help me understand why using the system level SD scan is needed, I might've changed/removed this review. Not everyone's a jerk.

It does work and gets the job done quickly but the widget doesn't always fit the look of all home screens. Maybe the simple quite rescan icon would be better
