Katakana - Learn Japanese for Android
I completed the hiragana counterpart of this app and I really liked it. This app is great as well except for the writing test. It is WAY too sensitive. I can't even write a character that is shown and for some reason it just skips entire lines and assumes you did it correctly. Really strange. The hiragana app's written tests work fine. I can film it if requested as trouble shooting feedback.
The exercises I feel are very effective, and are simple to answer because of the great clarity in design. I'd like to point out, however, that for the exercise of "Choose the katakana", under the "Vowels, k & s", ソ does not ever come up; and if it does, not frequently enough. In the other two exercises, it seems to show up just fine.
Great app, i learn really fast with it. I practice when I am bored and in bed before I go to sleep. it is kind of addicting. Is there a reason why "so" doesn't apear in the first Katakana Vowels, k&s??
The app is good and accurate but i personally find it too sensetive. If you draw the line etc a little bit long which is easy to do, especially on a small phone you get it wrong and have to keep trying it until you get it right even ig you feel like you know it
The last time I had tried to learn these was years ago. I had been struggling with them when I stopped, but after using this i've gotten a lot better than where I left off.
My mistakes on writing each katakana are the reason y i memorized each letter or texts.. coz when u get wrong on a stroke.. u will be back again to write it again.. annoying but great
I start right next to the character, it shows this, then says I'm wrong?? And sometimes its wrong and says I'm right?? Hate the writing section. Its really frustrating.
Great app. Love the reinforcement when you make a mistake, the difficulty progression into recalling the symbol entirely without hints, and all the modes for really getting the kana to stick.
This is an app to learn katakana, assuming you understand what katagana is and how it works. Is you want to do either of the latter statements you need to use a different app. ( for anyone looking for that kind of app look for tae Kim's guide to learning Japanese ). This app is a godsend for learning the katakana symbols though. Possibly the best app for that purpose.
All you need. Just use a it a couple times a day and try and get a perfect score and you will find you can read katakana easily. If recommend learning to write them by hand on paper but the application shows you the strike order, which is important.

On the Hiragana version of the app, it tells me that tsu with a double-slash (ten-ten) is pronounced "du." In the Katakana version, it tells me that tsu with a ten-ten is pronounced "zu." Can you please just make up your mind, because that isn't helping me learn. Other than that mishap, the app is fun and does help improve my kana remembering skills. Thank you!
Such a good app! I started with the Hiragana and learnt it in just over a week. I don't bother with the flash cards and don't waste time on the Romanji but I love that the app sounds the word and then allows you to draw it following the correct stroke pattern. I learn by doing and this definitely makes it stick. I'm finding the Katakana more difficult (which I've heard is the same for most people) but this app is definitely making it ALOT easier. I have also recommended it to everyone in my Japanese class!
It's probably me, but the way the brush strokes are ordered in the app for some of the kana are less effective. I know Japanese correct writing has the brush strokes in a specific order, but some of the orders that are forced for you to get the kana correct are orders that I am physically incapable of following because of how inefficient it makes writing multiple characters, either top-down or left-right. I really like the way it progresses from guide lines, to dots, then just grid to allow learning.
One of the best app to learn katakana. I highly recommend this app if you want a refresher in katakana. It doesn't teach you why shi + yo is sho or ni + yu is nyu it teach you some things but this app is more memorizing. But still a really good app.

Thanks for this great app i learned katakana and with your hiragana version I learned hiragana xD thanks to the repetitive nature i can now also distinguish the sounds when I watch Japanese media so on that note I'd like request and similar version for bopomofo if you would indulge me xD
Don't listen to negative reviews, I've successfully used this app and the hiragana counterpart to learn kana without zero prior knowledge. However you should also read on an article about why, how and when is kana used and some extra rules for katakana script that this app doesn't cover. But that's fine, that's not the aim of this app, this app teaches you to write and recognize katakana and it does that impressively well.
Does not introduce the katakana. It assumes you already know them and only helps you to remember them. That's not learning. Instant uninstall for me.
I start right next to the character, it shows this, then says I'm wrong?? And sometimes its wrong and says I'm right?? Hate the writing section. Its really frustrating.
Excellent app for memorising and recognition but drawing the characters is much too sensitive as I sometimes try to draw a straight line and it goes off in another direction :)
The part that teaches you how to write is so cleverly designed. It gives just enough hints, and teaches correct stroke order and direction. You can learn katakana from scratch with this. I knew about 5 kana when I began, but I learned a lot from the "reviewing" function--you can just guess and use process of elimination, and before you know it, you've absorbed a bunch of kana. So don't listen to the review that says it doesn't work. It's an excellent design.
Learned Katakana comfortably with casual study over 3 days (while travelling in Japan). Amazed at how almost effortless it was. Absolute gem of an app. No bells & whistles, just effective and fast memory tools from all necessary perspectives. I'd LOVE to see this exact format for other languages/subjects.
I'm closer than ever for reading japanese and turning romaji to kana not Only is it fun but it's very easy!
Might be difficult if you have no kana knowledge at first, but once you learn some this is the best app for quick practice
Does what it is supposed to, and taught me many katakana characters in no time! Really cool, deserves definetely more and more downloads! Ive downloaded many katakana apps, but non of them was satisfing, but this one.

This app is really smoothe and never crashes even on my crappy phone!

I tried about 7 or 8 other kana learning apps. And hiragana learn and katakana learn are by far my favorite. in about 2 weeks ive successfully learned both writing systems and i was just screwing around. I really like the groups that the kana are seperated into making it easier to learn than integrating the similar kana all in one so you do no become confused right off the bat.
Using this trainer+ same hiragana trainer and they are both perfect
Ignore the last user. They are the lazy ones not seeing that one section is for writing romaji and another is for the actual kana, plus wo and wa is not missing. I recommend this app for people who already a basic grasp at kana. This app helps your brain to recognize them faster which is essential for building better reading comprehension.
I really love this app, my only gripe, is that "so" is missing, from choose the kana exercise. If fixed, 5 stars.
I personally started with choosing how to write the characters whenever I was bored. After getting used to the stroke order, I did matching, before finally doing the write in romaji form. After repeated practice, you can start to read foreign words on Japanese!
Great for student who can't find an easy and fun way to learn katakana. Thanks dev!
This seems to be for people who are near to know it, keep guessing then bam, instant Learn. Come on, Im like 2.
Used to be 5 stars then down to 1 due to permissions.. Now back to 5 but deserves more as it's a lot better then it was.
