About Journal of Discourses

The first editions of the Journal of Discourses were published in England by George D. Watt, the stenographer of Brigham Young, in 1854.

The 26 volume collection includes 1,438 sermons given by 55 church leaders, including Brigham Young, John Taylor, Parley P. Pratt, Heber C. Kimball, George A. Smith, Orson Pratt, Franklin D. Richards, Jedediah M. Grant, and others.

The 26 volumes cover a wide range of topics such as celestial marriage, spiritual communication, fall and redemption of the earth, the personality of God, temples, and others.

Bonus book! Lectures on Faith

Lectures on Faith were published in the forepart of the Doctrine and Covenants in all editions from 1835 until 1921. Although the lectures are not currently published as part of the standard works, it is evident that they were held in high esteem by the Prophet Joseph Smith and those that followed him. President Joseph Fielding Smith said

“These lectures are of great value and should be studied... I consider them to be of extreme value in the study of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” Bruce R. McConkie has classified the lectures as “some of the best lesson material ever prepared on the Godhead; on the character, perfections, and attributes of God; on faith, miracles, and sacrifice. They can be studied with great profit by all scholars.”

The seven lectures in this collection deal with the following subjects:

What is faith?

What is the role of revelation in developing faith?

What are the attributes of God?

Why is it necessary to have a correct knowledge about God's attributes in order to exercise true faith?

What is the true nature of the Godhead and what is God's purpose for man?

What is the role of sacrifice in building the faith needed for eternal life?

What are the effects or results that flow from having true faith?

The compilation contains:

A historical sketch by John A. Widstoe.

A treatise on true faith by Orson Pratt.

A bibliography on Melchizedek by Ariel L. Crowley.

Also included, the King Follett discourse.

Only thing missing is a search feature and a highlighting and bookmark feature with option to jump to your highlights and/or bookmarks. Kindle versions for under $10 have this and I would pay for that feature in this app. That being said I like the Table of Contents with sermon names/subject matter, as well as the layout of this version much better.

I'm glad to see the addition of the lectures on faith and all of the journals, would be great if it had an index and/or search feature, also has issues with force closing in this newest update so I can't read any of the content Edit: no more force closing it works great, I am looking forward to a more intuitive and friendly interface in the future though

I am so happy this finally came out on Android as it was out in ipad/iphone app previously. I am so thrilled to have the 26 volume set to read! The set in hardcover goes for $400-$500 new and rarely do you find a used one and even those will run you in the hundreds. I too would like a search feature and a bookmark system. The system on the LDS Gospel Library is perfect and would really be nice on this. With this and the incredible LDS Gospel Library I carry my tablet to church instead of my scriptures and I have the bigger font without buying the large print scriptures. I too wish it and the LDS Gospel Library were on an audiobook format. I am trying to figure out how to make it audio by converting it to my laptop and using my text to speech or I may try to find an app.

I love that this is finially available for Android users. That alone gives it 3 stars. Add to it the linkable table of contents and its a strong 4 star app. Would love to see future update to include a highlighting and bookmark feature with option to jump to your highlights and/or bookmarks. Would also appreciate a scroll bar along the right side of the discourse so you hace some idea of how far you are progressing through the discourse.

So excited about this app!! It's awesome that someone is doing this! ! I would love Love LOVE it if there was some sort of search feature and if possibly there was an audio option so I could listen to it while working! ! That would mean SO much to me since I have so much to learn, but I do know that would probably be hard to come by . I would give five stars in a second if there was a searching feature ! :)
