Distance education or distance learning is the education of students who may not always be physically present at a school. Paced races may be offered in either synchronous mode, but self-paced races are almost always offered asynchronously. Each delivery model offers both advantages and disadvantages for students, teachers and institutions.

Kaplan and Haenlein classify distance learning in the group of the participants: 1) MOOCs (Massive Open Online Courses): Open-access online race (ie, without specific participation restrictions) ; 2) SPOCs (Small Private Online Courses): Online course that only offers a limited number of places and therefore requires some form of formal enrollment; 3) SMOCs (Synchronous Massive Online Courses): Open-access online course that allows for unlimited participation. 4) SSOCs (Synchronous Private Online Courses): Online course that only offers a limited number of places and requires students to be "present" at the same time (synchronously).
