불지종가 통도사

사찰의 기록에 따르면 통도사라 한 것은, 이 절이 위치한 산의 모습이 부처가 설법하던 인도 영취산의 모습과 통하므로 통도사라 이름했고(此山之形通於印度靈鷲山形), 또 승려가 되고자 하는 사람은 모두 이 계단(戒壇)을 통과해야 한다는 의미에서 통도라 했으며(爲僧者通而度之), 모든 진리를 회통(會通)하여 일체중생을 제도(濟道)한다는 의미에서 통도라 이름지었다고 한다.

이 절의 창건 유래에 대한 《삼국유사》의 기록을 보면 신라의 자장(慈藏)이 당나라에서 불법을 배우고 돌아와 신라의 대국통(大國統)이 되어 왕명에 따라 통도사를 창건하고 승려의 규범을 관장, 법식(法式)을 가르치는 등 불법을 널리 전한 데서 비롯된다. 이때 부처의 진신사리를 안치하고 금강계단(金剛戒壇)을 쌓아, 승려가 되고자 원하는 많은 사람들을 득도케 하였다.

이렇게 창건된 이 절은 이후 계율의 근본도량이 되었고, 신라의 승단(僧團)을 체계화하는 중심지가 되었다. 창건의 정신적 근거이며 중심인 금강계단은 자장과 선덕여왕이 축조하여 부처의 진신사리를 안치한 이후 오늘날까지 잘 보존되고 있다.

경내의 건물들은 대웅전과 고려 말 건물인 대광명전(大光明殿)을 비롯하여 영산전(靈山殿)·극락보전(極樂寶殿) 외에 12개의 법당과 보광전(普光殿)·감로당(甘露堂) 외에 6방(房), 그리고 비각(碑閣)·천왕문(天王門)·불이문(不二門)·일주문(一柱門)·범종각(梵鐘閣) 등 65동 580여 칸에 달하는 대규모이다. 이 건물들은 임진왜란 때 소실된 것을 1601년(선조 34)과 41년(인조 19) 두 차례에 걸쳐 중수하였는데 대광명전을 제외하고는 모두 근세의 건물들이다.

이 사찰은 부처의 진신사리를 안치하고 있어 불상을 모시지 않고 있는 대웅전이 국보 제290호로 지정되어 있으며, 이 밖에 보물 제334호인 은입사동제향로(銀入絲銅製香爐), 보물 제471호인 봉발탑(奉鉢塔)이 있고, 보물전시관에는 병풍·경책(經冊)·불구(佛具) 및 고려대장경(해인사 영인본) 등의 사보(寺寶)가 소장되어 있다. 소속 암자로는 선원(禪院)인 극락암을 비롯하여 백운암·비로암 등 13개의 암자가 있다.
