Das Territorium Thailands nimmt einen beträchtlichen Teil der Landfläche Südostasiens ein und erstreckt sich südöstlich der letzten Ausläufer des Himalaya bis auf die Malaiische Halbinsel und umschließt dabei den Golf von Thailand, ein Randmeer des Südchinesischen Meeres. Die Landfläche Thailands erinnert in ihrer Gestalt entfernt an den Kopf eines Elefanten. Die maximale Ausdehnung in Nord-Süd-Richtung liegt bei 1.770 km, in Ost-West-Richtung bei 780 km. Die gesamte Grenzlänge beträgt 5.326 km. Die Küstenlänge im Golf von Thailand beträgt 1.878 km und im andamanischen Meer 937 km. Insgesamt hat Thailand eine Fläche von 513.115 km². Thailand liegt zwischen 5° 37’ und 20° 27’ nördlicher Breite und zwischen 97° 22’ und 105° 37’ östlicher Länge.[3]
Die Nordregion ist bergig, dort findet sich der höchste Punkt des Landes: Doi Inthanon (2565 m). Der Nordosten (Isaan) besteht aus der Khorat-Hochebene, einer im Sommer staubtrockenen, in der Regenzeit jedoch überschwemmten Landschaft, die keine intensive Landwirtschaft zulässt. Bewässerungsprojekte und Staudämme sollen hier Abhilfe schaffen. Die dortige Bevölkerung ist ärmer als der Durchschnitt des Landes. Im Norden und Osten des Isaan bildet der Mekong die Grenze zu Laos.
Die Zentralregion wird beherrscht vom Chao Phraya, der dem fruchtbaren Land Wasser zuführt und südlich von Bangkok in den Golf von Thailand mündet.
