About Kitchen Companion
Food waste and health issues such as obesity are growing at a rapid rate. This project aims to design and build an Android application that can track both the food in a users home and the food they intake in the hopes of reducing food waste and unhealthy eating. Kitchen Companion will warn users of soon to expire foods and suggest recipes using these items in the hopes that the user will use them rather than waste them while at the same time keeping the user to a healthy diet.
Features:
- Scan products using their barcode or by entering their barcode number.
- Track food in a users home and warn of expiry dates.
- Suggest recipes based on soon to expire foods so the user can consume them before they go bad.
- Suggest recipes based on the current weather.
- Store images of recipes found in magazines.
- Maintain a shopping list so you don't overspend next time you shop.
- Track the food you eat to stick to a healthy diet.
- Get warnings about food allergies.
- Get warnings for people with health issues about potential dangers, eg. Diabetes having too much sugar.
- View a graph of the weeks calorie and nutrient intake.
In the future I hope to build and maintain a larger database of products and their barcodes with the help of the apps users which can add unknown items through the manual add feature. I also hope to design a desktop client which allows for the backing up of data to a PC and provides a more user friendly way of inputting long text based homemade recipes which could be uploaded to the users mobile device.

The recipe feature is very good. I like that it tells you what percentage of ingredients you have. The inventory kitchen is bad. You have to manually enter all of the products info. It may save it for next time but I don't have 5 hours to manually enter my whole kitchen.
