O cricrió é uma ave passeriforme da família Cotingidae.
Conhecido também como tropeiro, biscateiro, namorador (Pará),
capitão-do-mato (Roraima e Bahia), poaieiro (Mato Grosso),
seringueiro (Amazonas), ha-wi-já e wissiá (nomes indígenas - Mato Grosso),
gritador (Pernambuco) e cricrió-seringueiro. Age como um alarme na mata,
iniciando o canto quando algum animal grande ou pessoa entra em seu território.
O nome capitão-do-mato é uma alusão à pessoa responsável pela captura de escravos fugitivos,
pois, segundo a tradição oral (especialmente na região de Ilhéus-Bahia),
quando os negros fugiam e entravam na mata os cricriós iniciavam a cantoria e aqueles eram localizados.
Nota-se também uma variação regional no canto,
sendo que o dos indivíduos da Mata Atlântica é mais rápido que o dos amazônicos.

Nome Científico

Seu nome científico significa: do (grego) lipaugus = escuro,
desprovido de luz; e do (latim) vociferans, vociferari = gritador, aquele que grita, gritar.

Características

Mede entre 24 e 28 centímetros de comprimento e seu peso varia entre 67,2 e 82,6 gramas (Neve, 2004) segundo o sexo e a disposição geográfica.

Hábitos

É comum no estrato médio de florestas altas, tanto de terra firme como de várzea,
raramente indo até as bordas. Acompanha bandos mistos de aves ocasionalmente.
