About Url Shortcut

This very simple app lets you create home screen shortcuts to a webpage or any URL, without also having to have that website bookmarked in your browser. It will work with any Android browser and will popup Android's 'choose a browser' window if you have an alternative browser installed. Remember that you can create a home screen folder to put all of these shortcuts in.

NOTE: This app does NOT have its own launcher icon. The only way to "open" it is to long-press a blank area of your home screen and choose to add a shortcut using 'Url Shortcut'. Some new launches hide shortcuts amongst the other widgets. If your launcher has a widgets drawer then you should look in there for a 1x1 Url Shortcut widget.

You should use a good launcher like ADW Launcher, Launcher Pro or Go Launcher which lets your specify custom icons. This means that I don't have to bundle a billion icons with this app.

NOTE 2: Use 'URL Shortcut' and the 'Desktop VisualizeR' to create shortcuts with whatever icons you like:

If you give this app 1 star, you have anger management issues and expect too much from the people around you. You will be unable to find someone to care for you and this will benefit the rest of us by stopping your negative genes from propagating to the rest of the population. If you have problems (with the app, not in general) or suggestions, press the contact button in the Android market app :)

People with anger management issues:
------------------------------------
Jeffzda - you've missed the point of this app. The idea is to NOT clog up your browser's bookmarks with more URLs.

Byron - There's no misrouting going on, that's Android not knowing what to do with a mailto: URL. The shortcut this app creates simply has 'data' set to whatever you give it. If I claimed to treat mailto: URLs any different then fair enough, but I didn't. To the anger clinic with you!

Lisa - Lisa, Lisa, Lisa... did you even bother to read the application's description? There is no launcher icon for it, because that isn't how you used it. Do you also know that I can't actually reply to you to help you? Ah well, that's another 1 star attached to this app forever. You've probably uninstalled it already and forgotten about its existence. The Play Store isn't going to forget about that 1 star though :'(

This is a wonderful app. Actually it doesn't work on holding the blank area, on some mobiles like mine. But it does work. Steps - 1> Go to Your Application Menu, (Where all the icons of your downloaded apps are present.) 2> Select the option for widgets. Or just keep scrolling until you find them. 3> Pick "Url Shortcut". Press your finger on it and drag it down to your home screen. 4> Fill the information and click ok. It works. Giving it 4.5 stars for missing this info from the description.

As a non reformed bookmark junkie, with a distaste for chrome, I have FINALLY found my true love! Oh URL shortcut, how do I love thee? Let me count the ways! Anyone who can read, (looking at you Lisa) can figure out the super simple principles of this indulgent app. Yes, like sweet & savory salted caramel, the perfect combination of brilliance & ease. Run with me now dear URL shortcut, into the hills & lie with me in the sun bathed Meadows of your simple perfection, where we will be together, forever!

Remove the silliness in the description. And grow a thicker skin. And your URL shortcuts don't launch Chrome. Uninstalling now for not being responsible for the developer's negative attitude, and his ineffective app. Chrome comes with this app built-in, and it works, without the Chrome developers complaining in the description.

It allows me to create a shortcut to websites. Very easy to use. I especially enjoyed the comments by the dev about 1 star reviews. LOL Thanks for the app and laugh!

I use Naked browser which doesn't have a create desktop shortcut option. I also use SS launcher which lets you put any shortcut anywhere, any icon or text. With this app you just long press to create an "other" shortcut to this app, then you just add the url, and pesto, you have a bookmark shortcut. I found no other way to do this without this app.

Crashed my device so hard it forced a reboot? Beware of this code. Uninstalling quick.

This allows me to create direct links to any URL I want in Nova launcher. I use it to create direct links to youtube playlists and channels. I use Nova launcher's built in icon selection to give the links a youtube icon.

For some reason my Nova launcher doesn't let me add shortcuts. This app took up the slack for my bookmarks. ????

I've been using this for a while and it works well. The only issue for me is that if I want to make a change to the URL I have to delete the shortcut and create a new one. It would be much better if I could amend the existing shortcut, like in MS Windows.

sloved my problem with my browser can't "add shortcut to homescreen" on my wiko robby with nova launcher... very loved this!!!

Super useful! I use it to open URLs from Nova Launcher's icon swipe actions. Can't seem to paste URLs in there for some reason, but otherwise excellent functionality, thanks for a great utility!

I think this would be a great app, but I can't figure out how to use it. I'm following the instructions, by it doesn't seem to do the things the instructions day. Please help

Works just like I like. Creates a real shortcut that works independent of the app. The shortcuts are not deleted if the app is uninstalled. The only option it lacks that I would like it to have is to set the icon by default using the website's favicon and being able to set a custom icon via a URL or local storage. Don't like that the app cannot be moved to the SD card. But maybe that is expected from an app that is launched from widgets.

Kudos. I've been searching for a URL Shortcut to open a video stream using VLC. This does exactly that. One feature I would love to see is being able to change the icon of the shortcut to the App being used/launched. But it's a minor wish. Thank you!

Some people don't realize their phone's launcher may be different and you'll have to follow different steps to attain the desired outcome. To these people I say go kick rocks, technology obviously isn't for you.

Without a way to backup the urls that you create it becomes a dead end IMO. Update: just tested to see if nova launcher would backup these bookmarks, and it does! Now if we just could make them look good ;j

Ugly but simple and functional. U only have to see it when u make the shortcut so who cares what it looks like. Also, the responses to people with anger problems are quite entertaining (see the expanded app description). 5 star upgrade to make up for Lisa's 1 star.

I had anger management issues until I installed this app. Now I don't because it solved my problem of not being able to bookmark a page designed to redirect upon open.

Excellent and very simple way to solve an annoying shortcoming of Android. Enables you to shortcut to a page you visit often with just one tap from the home screen, without having to open the browser and find the bookmark. 5 well-deserved stars.

Chrome in Android 4.3 already allows you to place a bookmark on the home screen without having it in your bookmarks folder (and it doesn't use a generic icon). But for those using a different browser or old OS I suppose this could still be helpful. Finding the app in Android 4.3 is like a treasure hunt: press and hold on the home screen, select Apps, then Shortcuts, the scroll to URL Shortcut, then type your URL and page name, every time... For Sony Xperia users, this doesn't overcome the bug :(

The widget doesn't appear anywhere in the Widgets list. (Android 5.1.1, Nexus 5).

My Note 2 used to have a widget that let me place single tile bookmarks to my screen. It disappeared a few months ago. I used it to put each manga I was reading into a folder on my screen & there wasn't another way to. I finally found this after trying tons of those dropbox bookmark apps, thank you so much! It works great, & to anyone not reading the description on how to use it, you shouldn't be allowed to have smart phone if you're really that dumb. Lol, the description is another reason to rate 5 stars!

Works exactly as expected! LOVE your description too! It's unfortunate how many IDIOTS there are out there leaving bad reviews because they are stupid or can't take 1 minute to read the description. Here is a 5 star to help offset those 1 star reviews.

When I press and hold on an empty space in the home screen, nothing comes up.

T70%

Exactly what I was looking for. Browsers now seem to create private home screen shortcuts. As a result, you can't save a bookmark in one browser but always open it in another. This lets me do exactly that. Thanks!

Does what it says it does and does it well. It could have better graphics, but it's the end result that counts. To change the icon, long press icon to bring up menu of options. Your search is over. BTW, you have to lower your keyboard on tablets, too see the address/input area when entering your "label" and "url" data.

When I put the url, it should lookup for the icon already. Or put a feature that will make you change it. Also, upgrade the UI for android lolipop

Like the app description notes, I couldn't launch from home screen, so I found the widget and moved it to homer screen. That widget icon then becomes my URL shortcut! Thanks much.

Helps me a lot. I don't want to bookmark every link I put on my home screen. There are links I temporarily put on my screen while I test a web page. I definitely don't want those bookmarked. I also find anoying the default process to put a link on the home screen.
