About NOAA Ocean Exploration & Res.

Join NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research LIVE as we explore the deepest reaches of the ocean from NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer.

This app allows you to stream video live from our remotely operated vehicle on the seafloor (at depths of up to 6,000 meters or 3.7 miles) directly to your mobile device. Join scientists from around the world as they explore the deepest, darkest reaches of our planet’s last unknown frontier. Hear them discuss their findings and watch as true discoveries unfold.

The app also provides information on the location of NOAA Ship Okeanos Explorer and updates about our dives.

Even as the importance of deep areas of the ocean in our everyday lives continues to increase, most of our knowledge of the ocean lies in shallower waters. Our deep-ocean knowledge remains limited and, in many instances, we are left “flying blind” when it comes to areas such as management, regulation, and resource use in deep-water areas. NOAA’s Office of Ocean Exploration and Research is the only federal organization currently dedicated to exploring our unknown ocean.

This is a nice app that supports NOAA's mission by delivering real-time data to the public. But, it wants lots of permissions. I have a lot of respect for NOAA, but why does this government-developed app want to record audio, read my calendar, and find accounts on my device?

...hangs on launch after latest Android update (6.0.1). As previously stated, would benefit from screen rotation for us folks viewing by phone. Zooming and screenshots would be good too!

The app is very straightforward. My only comment is I was unable to use my screen auto rotate function, so the full screen was not really full. My OS is an Android 5.0.
