About Functional Ear Trainer

Have you (or one of your friends) ever wanted to learn to transcribe or play music by ear?

It is so important for a musician to know what you are hearing. A good musical ear helps when you are composing, improvising, transcribing melodies, or playing with others.

Most likely you have already tried different programs to learn to recognize intervals or even to acquire perfect pitch. However, although such programs develop your ear, but can you actually play any melody you hear as soon as you listen to it?

Imagine you could understand music... It is like when somebody is talking to you, you not only hear pleasant sounds, but you recognize words and their meaning.

One day I came across Alain Benbassat's program called "Functional Ear Trainer" and have been using it ever since. It is based on Alain's method to learn to recognize tones.

The main difference between the Functional Ear Trainer and other methods is that it teaches you to distinguish between tones in the context of a particular musical key. You begin to recognize the role (or function) of each tone in this key, which is incredibly similar to its role in other keys of the same scale.

And it is *guaranteed* anyone can gradually develop this skill. It does not matter:
– who you are – an absolute beginner in music or a virtuoso professional musician;
– how old you are – a 3 yo kid or a 90+ adult;
– what musical instrument you play (you don't even have to play one).

The only requirement is to practice for 10 minutes a day.

I was so excited about this ear trainer that I have developed an Android app based on the Alain Benbassat method. I hope you will find it useful.

Yepp. It works. Im quite amazed to be honest. 60%of my brain. 40% of the method. I always wanted to learn this skill, but i didnt like the methods until this one. Alain is really smart with splitting the octave in 2. I managed to score 100% easily on major octave many scales, in like 5 days. 10 minutes a day. I saw that singing the notes helps strongly, i guess it remains stuck in memory easier.

I noticed the progress immediately. Educational music apps (or any educational app for that matter) tend to be boring and slow-progressing. (That is to say that the learner has to spend a lot of time on it to notice any improvement on their part.) This app helped a lot more than I was expecting it to and I actually really enjoy using it. I was surprised at how quickly I noticed a difference. Also, all the purchases are optional and aren't prompted, and it's how apps like this are able to stay in business.

I've been using this for awhile and getting better, although slowly. My only problem is the difficulty ramps up too fast. First octave of C- major was fine. Next step was random octaves and it was too difficult. It would be nice to be able to create practice scales an octave up or down. Also, if you can increase the occurrence of notes that you are having trouble, then training would go faster.

M70%
by M####:

What makes this app most amazing is how many configurable options there are. I'm a very slow learner, so I need to ramp things up gradually. With other ear training programs, I quickly become overwhelmed, and I'm scoring at near-random on the exercises. This app will let me pick exactly which notes to practice, and it even gives me information on WHICH notes to practice. I'm never bored or overwhelmed, and always feel I'm making progress.

This app is a better teacher at ear training than those expensive music classes I took! I HIGHLY recommend this app and I sincerely applaud and thank the developer(s) for this piece of work. Suggestion tho, is there a way I can transfer the app to my SD card? My phone won't allow it to move locations (phone-->SD). It would be more convenient and be a space-saver if the app could move.

The coolest & most effective app. Just Great. But it would be very usefull if you could add an option to use ***piano keys*** instead of buttons to answers the questions. And why did you change to cool logo that the app had before? This logo doesn't look good. This app deserves an attractive logo.

After trying several ear-training apps, this is the one I come back to consistently. It's satisfying to see real, measurable progress. More than that, after a lifetime of wanting to play music by ear, it seems almost miraculous to see myself really learning to recognize intervals and notes. I got stuck for a while on sharps and flats, but by that time I had seen enough progress that I didn't hesitate to pay for the ability to customize the practice exercises so I could add some more fine-grained challenges. I can't hear a pop song and play the melody immediately by ear yet, but the amount of time it takes me to work it out is shrinking every day I use this app. I'm so thankful....

First of all, the app is usefull. However it has some problems, for example I created a harmonic minor scale in A, when it plays the resolution it play G instead of G# and it is annoying. Another issue is it gives error when I try to purchase it's extra material.

I've purchased the melodic dictations...but some times its still asking me to buy it!!??? PS:- Thanks for the reply..I have tried all things..Problem still persists. Now every time I have to open the app through play store for melodic dictations..terrible. PS2: Thanks again for the clarification..Issue is still there and I don't know how to fix it. I have upgraded it to 5 stars as I felt it is unfair to rate it down for this one flaw...

I hated this app in the first time I used it, but now I downloaded it again and finally understood how it works. The cadence makes the root note stick in your head and the resolution helps you to recognize the distance among the notes better than just training just the intervals. This app is awesome, I hated it because I was too dumb to use it hahaha. Totally recommended.

Great app, it works well, and helps a lot. I'm just a bit confused as to how it chooses the notes to practice. My stats show that I've done the outer notes almost twice as much as those in the middle. I'm great at the outer notes now, of course, but I was wondering why it would keep drilling what I already know into my brain rather than going over the things that I'm not as good at. It seems kinda strange that it'd be programmed this way rather than working on the notes that I'm not as good at. I also think it be nice if there was an option for a timed mode. The idea is that the player could set it to 1 to 5 seconds before the app automatically goes to the next note and if they don't answer in that time then it counts it as a wrong note. So that you have to rely on your instincts and go with your best guess before the time runs out. It would be much more fun as well as improve learning by making you do more notes in less time and also by making players rely more on their instincts. I know I'd like it.

Superb ear training app. A cadence followed by a note to identify. You can configure it to use note names, scale degree or movable do. it's just about perfect. Single notes and sequences. It's still under development and getting better. I can't recommend this highly enough.

M70%
by M####:

Excellent app! However, after the latest update i notice it's slightly off-sync to how it was before in terms of notes going up or down the scale as they light up. It's a little bit bothersome but doesn't significantly impair the functionality of the app. Would be nice to see it fixed in a later update. Thanks!!

This is a solid program to do functional ear training BUT the author has now added a melodic dictation mode with a very high price tag. It's not worth it. More than that, trying to take that much money for an Android app leaves a bad taste in my mouth. I will no longer recommend this app, but instead urge music students to go to the functional ear training website on their desktop computers.

M70%
by M####:

Lots of features and customizability. A couple of minor things: 1. When my phone is on auto rotate, the app doesn't rotate. 2. Would be nice if there was logic that prevents the same scale degree many times in a row.

M70%
by M####:

Helps, gets a bit boring after a while but what doesn't? Bought all the additional features and using it for two weeks or so - normally for about 30 minutes each time.

This app will help you learn solfeggio -- given a base sound, to recognize the notes of the scale based on it. It's an important skill if you're doing music theory! The basic app gives good lessons in recognizing single notes. Paid add ons let you recognize phrases. The only thing that's not clear is how to increase difficulty by changing options...

I have been taking vocal lessons for five months now and I was progressing very slowly. Most of my limitations were because my ear was letting me down and I wasn't always sure of the pitch. After using this app nightly for a few weeks, the difference is astounding. I am very grateful for this app.

... and a slow learner, but I'm slowly getting there with daily practice. If anyone/anything can help me learn to play by ear, it's this app!

There are many different approaches to ear training, and every ear is different, but functional ear training has been the best way to develop mine. I'm really happy that someone invested the time and effort on building an app that follows that "philosophy". The best thing for me is the app's versatility, because I tend to judge the tones in terms of their relation to 1, 3 or 5 and not only in relation to the root. This app let's me practice in a way that fits my particular ear, and that's great! Thanks!!

M70%
by M####:

Great app! I use it twice a day. I don't really know how this will be applicable as I am only able to tell by playing the resolve in my head. So I'm still a little curious as to how this translates to note recognition in music. But it's a way for me to practice my tone recognition in a simple and dedicated practice session.

In 2 weeks I was able to improve to the point where I can recognise any note in the C scale with almost no fail. I must admit this method is pretty solid. One thing that could have been useful would have been teaching intervals maybe? Great app whatsoever, thank you!

It's one of the better ear training apps out there... But I can't seem to buy anything. Every time I try to buy new features, it tells me I don't have an Internet connection, yet here I am writing this review with my Internet connection.

Never thought I could develop my ear. 35 years on guitar, I was convinced my ears were just not cut out for this. This app is improving my ears, my voice (starting to hear the notes in my head before opening my mouth ). Takes work but it CAN be learned. Thanks!

M70%

Wonderful app, thanks a lot. It's the first one I find in which difficulty can be fine tuned for total beginner with no musical ear whatsoever. I'll probably use it regularly for many years to come.

Yeah it trains your ear... to numbers. Why wouldn't they make the input selection actual notes. Dumb as fack

This app uses a fantastic methodology for ear training. I was flabbergasted to see usable results such a short amount of time. The UI is clean and no-frills, which helps to really get you into it. Highly recommended for musicians of all skill levels.

Super ear training app! We love it! We've seen improvement right away, and continue to get better and better at the more and more complicated levels.

Actually works. I get so much more out of listening to music already - it's like I have always listened to it as a foreign language, and now I know some of the words! Instrument packs were essential for me to learn to pull out the pitch from all the other qualities of the sound. The only thing missing in my view is a way to learn harmony, but that could be another thing altogether. Maybe in the months and years it will take me to become fluent in melodies, someone will come up with a way to use this same method to teach harmony.

M70%

It's a beautiful app, it's easy to use, and I haven't noticed any problems/bugs. I even feel like I'm getting better at identifying intervals, and the stats show me I'm inproving

After some practise it's still hard to hear and see the melody on the piano. Maybe I am just a tone def bastard. Cool name for a band though.

This app is as simple as it gets. You hear a tonicized key and then a single note and you have to pick its scale degree. I think it's incredibly useful and I use it to practice several times a day. There are some customizations but it's really very simple and practical.

M70%
by M####:

I couldn't believe such a simple idea worked but it does! The great part is, I can practice while I'm walking somewhere.

O70%

Great app. Other ear trainers tend to focus on intervals, which I find not very helpful when playing. Being able to identify notes in relation to a tonal centre is much more useful.

M70%
by M####:

As the app's name implies, this is a very functional ear training tool. I've been using it for about a week and I'm already see improvement! The UI looks a little plain and simple without too many bells and whistles, but if you dive into the menus there are a TON of customization options for different practice modes

Been loving this app since day one. A friend suggested it to me, and I've been using it every day since then. It has really helped me move forward with my ear training and ability to transcribe music. I thought it was too cheap for how much it's helped me, great to see new features and I'm happy to give some extra money for the new instruments and exercises. Keep up the excellent work! And a suggestion, maybe some chord identification in the future? Looking forward to see what comes next :)

I've used quite a few of these ear training apps. I liked perfect ear pro the best, but I've noticed much better results this one. The fact that it doesn't just throw a bunch of intervals and progressions at you and wait for you to sort them out--but puts them into context-- seems to make all the difference. Definitely the best.

M70%

I had some difficulty understanding tonics, tones, and notes "resolving" into tonics. After a few days I got a hang of the method - memorize how the notes progress up and down the scale.

Y70%

This is such a great app. I love that you can change the settings in so many ways to suit the level you're at. I always felt that developing a good ear was beyond my capabilities but this app makes it so understandable and breaks everything down into manageable chunks.
