বুখারী শরীফের পূর্ণ নাম ‘আল জামিউল মুসনাদুস সহীহুল মুখতাসারু মিন উমূরি রাসূলিল্লাহি সাল্লাল্লাহু ‘আলাইহি ওয়া সাল্লাম ওয়া সুনানিহী ওয়া আইয়্যামিহী’। সকল মুহাদ্দিসের সর্বসম্মত সিদ্ধান্ত হল, সমস্ত হাদীস গ্রন্থের মধ্যে বুখারী শরীফের মর্জাদা সবার ঊর্ধ্বে এবং কুর’আন মাজীদের পরেই সর্বাপেক্ষা বিশুদ্ধ গ্রন্থ। ইমাম বুখারী মোট ছয় লক্ষ হাদীস থেকে যাচাই বাছাই করে দীর্ঘ ১৬ বছরে এ গ্রন্থখানি সংকলন করেন। চুলচেরা যাচাই বাছাই ছাড়াও প্রতিটি হাদীস সংকলনের আগে ইমাম বোখারী গোসল করে দু’রাকাত নামায আদায় করে ইস্তিখারা করার পর এক একটি হাদীস লিপিবদ্ধ করেছেন। এরূপ কঠোর সতর্কতা অবলম্বনের ফলে অন্যান্য হাদীস গ্রন্থের তুলনায় সারা মুসলিম জাহানে বুখারী শরীফ গ্রন্থ হিসেবে সর্বাপেক্ষা জনপ্রিয়তা অর্জন করতে পেরেছে। সিহাহ্ সিত্তার বা বিশুদ্ধ ৬টি গ্রন্থের মধ্যে বুখারী ও মুসলিম সবচেয়ে বিশুদ্ধ যার ১টি হাদিস ও কেউ প্রমান করতে পারে নাই যেটি কুরআনের সাথে অসঙ্গতিপূর্ণ। যার কারনে মানুষ এ ২টি গ্রন্থ খতম দেয় সোয়াব এর আসায়।
