Los mapuche son uno de los pueblos originarios más significativos en Chile por su importante influencia cultural y por conservar viva su tradición e identidad hasta el día de hoy.

El arte mapuche es parte fundamental de esta identidad y reflejo de su rica y profunda tradición cultural, traspasada de generación en generación durante siglos, desde época precolombina. Entre sus distintas expresiones y materialidades destacan la textilería, la orfebrería, la alfarería, la cestería y el tallado en madera. Algunas de estas manifestaciones muestran continuidad desde tiempos prehispánicos, mientras otras son el resultado de la adopción de nuevas técnicas y materiales traídos por los conquistadores.

Tradicionalmente ha existido entre los mapuche una diferenciación de actividades por sexo; el hombre preferentemente trabaja la madera, la tierra y la mujer elabora los textiles.
