Journal Star for Android
You can't customize the types of articles you consider to be breaking news for notifications. The app also has considerably fewer categories than the website if you want to view articles pertaining to a subject area.
Notification hell in this new version. Not every story is worthy of a push. Only way to shut it off is to block it in Android. The feedback in the app is broken too. Sadly this type of thing is why local papers are dying.
Most of the time it will not load the full story. When I get a notification I open it and it will not load the stroy. It's very slow when loading stories.
Turn off the obnoxious notifications!!!! Uninstalled. I'll get my news elswhere
Never can read whole articles! stops half way every time. App is junk. Headlines are miss leading also
I need to be able to turn off the annoying notifications. If this doesn't get fixed will uninstall app!
Articles will not fully load, you can read only partial articles. Annoying.
More than half the time you can never read the whole article because it won't let you scroll all the way down the article. Wish that would be fixed been like that for months
Can't turn off notifications... Really annoying!
Lately I've been getting alert all day long, is there anyway to stop them?
Great! I enjoy it very much!
Love seeing the updates
Please consider adding the ability to fine-tune push notificications. Severe weather/sports/breaking news/etc. The 1011 News app has this feature.
If you download this app, you can judge for yourself. Just rate it when you decide to delete it. I love the journal star. The app is awful and could be made better.
Can't open a single photo or a video without the app crashing. Your photo stories and sideshows won't even open. If there were no stars, I'd give that rating.
The only bad I can say is screen rotation takes you back to the top of the page.
Try to open picture and article shuts down. Can't view some multiple picture story's.
Every time I search for an article it shuts down trying to open it.
Keeps me in the know when I'm away from home!
Follow Husker from Florida....Excellent non biased reporting.
Great stories
2 stars for irritating bugs. This app used to be bad, now it's worse. I get a notification for latest news, I tap it, and the app opens, and the article doesn't load. With the latest "update" this now happens 100% of the time. Often the article is nowhere to be found on the list either. Also, the news should be organized like the printed paper: local, national, world news etc. In addition to the "latest" category. Galaxy s8+
Great app! Keeps me informed of Nebraska news while on the road. No limit on number of FREE news articles read like the Grand Island Independent does! Thank you very much!!! The last update: Notifications now get lost in the regular latest news posts, instead of going to the inbox........????
Good overall, but often the whole article won't load. You can scroll down somewhat but unless there's an ad at the bottom of the page you often get stopped short. This has been a problem on and off (possibly related to different releases / updates?) for at least a year.
The latest update for "bug fixes" caused bugs for me, for the first time. Tapping a notification no longer directs you to the story; it just opens the app. I'm not able to scroll down far enough to read the entire article, either.
I get a notification about an article and i click it and it jist opens the app and not the article. Then half the time i cant even find the article i was alerted about. No national stories only local
Getting better! It just needs to update as news does....you can usually go to FB and find a story/current weather before i can find it here. Slowly but surely you're getting there... UPDATE:. No you didn't. Faster updates are needed in all areas! Think our local TV stations.... Update, update, and update!!!
The settings for push notifications can't save you from the editors at the paper who make consistently poor decisions about what information should be pushed and what should not. Other than that, I think the Journal Star is a good newspaper, and this app is how you get their news on your mobile phone in the best format.
2.5 stars for irritating bugs. Sometimes I get a notification of breaking or latest news, I tap it, and the app opens, and the article doesn't load and is nowhere to be found on the list either. This happens many times a day. Also, the news should be organized like the printed paper: local, national, world news etc. In addition to the "latest" category. Galaxy s6
It has been better lately. But has not been so good. I would try to open news break and wasn't there or couldn't connect at all. Keep working on it.
The "breaking" news pushes are far from breaking. Generally hours to days after you have heard it from every other news source. What is considered news is often questionable as well. Often good for a laugh around the office.
Great app! Keeps me informed of Nebraska news while on the road. No limit on number of FREE news articles read like the Grand Island Independent does! Thank you very much!
Many stories won't show up when you tap on them, offensive sexual ads pop up all the time even though I have a paid subscription . In over a year these issues have not been resolved. It needs improvement. I'm downgrading to one star.
Love this app use it all the time. The only problem I have is when they say a story is updated and then you click on it and it's still the original story.
The app is a good way to access articles via a mobile device. Article views are not limited via the app as they are via the website. Although there is advertising, it's relatively easy to dismiss. The app is relatively speedy and responsive during use. The filtering options are limited in a way that doesn't make sense to me. Your options are "Latest", "Sports", "Obituaries", "Classifieds", and "More". I don't understand why there aren't filters for "Local" and "National" news, "Opinion", and so forth. In addition, many people would enjoy being able to quickly apply a filter for specific "big name" writers (Cindy Lange-Kubick et al.) or repeating features (e.g. Biz Buzz). By far the worst feature is the app's push notification feature. I strongly recommend turning it off immediately (Utilities -> Settings). Journal Star editors make terrible decisions about which articles merit alerting app users, and they push far too many notifications on any given day. I would give the app 4 stars if filters were improved. Five stars would require app-specific news or interactive features; solid integration with LJS social media accounts; and/or news delivery options like audio or video clips.
Seems to stop working all the time lately. Had to turn off the notifications because I was getting notices for stupid things
Has been crashing and freezing numerous times recently which makes it hard to use with any frequency.
Constant add pop ups are annoying and not easy to navigate
Thanks for the news

App kept pushing notifications all of a sudden and I couldn't find where to turn them off in settings!
