About Go Scoring Camera

Score Go games automatically from a photograph. Get the real score of a finished game, or estimate the score of a game in progress. Supports both (Japanese) and area (Chinese) scoring. Identifies dead stones automatically, but lets you override its judgment. Use with any 19x19, 13x13, or 9x9 board, or play a 9x9 or 13x13 game using part of a 19x19 board.

Note: Doesn't work well with photos of computer monitors or televisions; the photo must be sharp enough to see the grid lines. For best results, photograph the board itself.

Take a photo feature doesn't work. When I upload a photo I take from another app, it gives a server 500 error.

Nothing works

It worked the first time I used it, and worked very well too, unfortunately it now crashes every single time with a Java exception error, which is itself a link to a site that when followed doesn't exist?! I've only attempted to use this app with screenshots since I only play computers at the moment so I can't say if the camera option gives the same error. For me, at the moment though it's entirely unusable.

extensive corrections required to every photo. dark or black boards hopeless. requires the images to be uploaded to a server: does not work offline and often has server errors.

The Go Scoring Camera is a unique application which reminds you how important is a photo of final position in a close game could be - once you remove the stones and accidentally make an error during the counting, there is no help. BUT, it seems that japanese scoring mode has a significant problem: dead stones on the board ("prisoners") are worth 2 points and not 1 point. Therefore the result will be accurate only if the number of dead stones _on the board_ is equal. If the number of dead stones is different, there is always an error. For example, if there are 10 black dead stones, and no white dead stones, the program is going to reduce the black score by -10, although it should be -20, and give the wrong result by 10 points. It is interesting that chinese scoring mode is giving accurate results. The fact that it gives different results in case of uneven number of dead stones confirms the flaw of the formula used. PLEASE, check and UPDATE for Fifth Star! A feature which is not visible on the first sight: "save and e-mail sgf" is actually sending the final position in standard go format which enables you to check the counting with another software.

Trying to upload an image or submit feedback both fail with server errors. Broken. Do not buy

Very cool app Does a great job with screenshots and photos of games on my Asus Transformer tablet. You can even save games in sgf format! My only complaint is that it uploads images to a server for analysis, so you need wifi turned on to use it. Note: Force closed on me when I tried to use the "Take Picture" option, but I just took a photo using the Android camera app and then used the "Load From Gallery" option instead. Not sure the former option is even worth keeping if it causes any problems.

I'm thrilled that this app exists. It makes it easy to score games and keep finished boards in digital form (sgf). What it lacks is in the details. There should be an option to change where the saved files are kept (on the SD card or internal storage, and what specific folder). It would be nice if the app could remember some player names and if there was an input field for player rank. There's also a large problem where if you use the exact same player names twice when saving games, the program will overwrite the old game instead of creating a second save file. Still, it's well worth the $5. I hope it is improved in the future.

So this is one of those apps I bought right when I saw what it did. Seconds after purchasing I suddenly realized that might have been a mistake, since I don't play on a regular goban - I have a 19x19 grid drawn in thin BIC pen lines onto the surface of a weirdly shaped coffee table. Also, my stones are only 6mm in diameter, so there's more space in between each stone. Dreading the expected result, I went ahead and tried it out. I'm happy to say that it works absolutely flawlessly. I definitely recommend it since you won't have to mess up the final board position to make counting easier.

I'm not sure if it's faster than experienced players using manual counting shortcuts, but as a noob playing with other noobs it sure speeds up scoring. The SGF feature isn't that useful since it's just the end state. Keeping player profiles with stats to track progress & rank might be a better idea. A couple tips for users. You can pinch-zoom the photo when fixing stones & grid. You can also quickly move the grid if it's way off by tapping a corner to select it, then tapping again somewhere else to move it. Use the micro adjust from there.

Darker wood seems to have many empty spots mistaken as black stones

This is a very unique app that requires a bit of patience, but works well under good lighting conditions. Zoom in when correcting stones.
