Mahatma Gandhi University is conducting a campaign for transforming Kottayam District into a 100% literate State in Organic Farming in cooperation with the National Service Scheme, Kerala Jaiva Karshaka Samithi, Department of Life Long Learning and Extension, other academic Schools/Departments of the University and Kudumbasree Units functioning in the Local Bodies. Preliminary studies have revealed that the programme shall cover 9 constituencies, 73 Grama Panchayats, 4 Municipalities, 1321 wards, 4, 87,296 houses and 1974000 inhabitants of the District. The aim of the programme is to make each family member of the district literate about organic farming. In order to achieve this aim, the University shall provide the guidelines to the stakeholders to produce essential vegetables required for a family for a year by cultivating it in atleast one cent of land or in grow bags through terrace farming of open space cultivation. MOOC programmes coupled with mobile applications shall be designed and provided to the volunteers for the popularisation of the organic literacy and the data pertaining to the training sessions shall be uploaded to a central repository on a real-time basis. The entire project which is expected to be completed by 31st Dec 2017 it is expected that with this project, the University may be successful inculcating organic farming as life style among the upcoming generations of the district.
