About Jack's Music Widget

A clean and simple music widget for Android 4.4 KitKat.

Jack's Music Widget should work with any music player that displays controls and album art on the lockscreen.

For more font options, upgrade to the Plus version: https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.jackthakar.musicwidget.plus

Note on Android 5.0: The current version of this app should work fine on Lollipop, but I'm working on a new version that adds additional features by using the new APIs available on 5.0.

Apps Confirmed to Work (v1.1.2 fixes issues with artist not displaying):
• Google Play Music
• Spotify (currently having issues)
• Pandora
• SoundCloud
• Apollo
• Rdio
• iHeartRadio
• DoubleTwist
• TuneIn Radio
• PowerAmp
• Rhapsody
• MixZing
• InfiniTracks
• Pocket Casts
• Songza

Let me know of any others that work and I'll add them to the list.

If you switch between different music players, you don't need to switch widgets. Just stop playing music in one app and start in another and the widget should switch.

Starting in 1.1, there are two widgets: one designed for a 4x1 or 4x2 grid and one with full bleed album art (works best when roughly square).
Additionally, there are three themes to choose from (dark, light, and transparent) for the 4x1 widget.

Important:
This widget will not work until you go to Security>Notification access in settings and check "Jack's Music Widget"

Unfortunately, the APIs that allow this are new in Kit Kat, so I can't port it back to earlier versions.

Developers: If you want your music app to work with this widget (and other apps which use the new KitKat RemoteController APIs), make sure that you setup a RemoteControlClient and pass the appropriate metadata (this widget uses album art, song title, and artist name).

Was working great on all my phones and tablets until I upgraded to Tmobile GS6. It will work for a little bit and then stop updating. Think it may be an issue with GS6 as Samsung also does not include full album art on lockscreen. Otherwise would be 5 stars

It's fine but a lot of work could be done and for the love of God don't get the paid version it's too much for 3 extra sliders and a change of font. The sad thing is, is that this is the one of the only decent options on the play store.

I think it's the best widget available right now but it still needs some help. I'd like to be able to set the color and the opacity of the widget. My biggest complaint is that the album art and music information perpetually stay on the app even after Spotify has been closed and the music has been stopped.

I use this on my phone and on my car's android headunit, where it is invaluable. Great job! I was just wondering if it would be possible to fetch the chosen default music player's last listened to song, on device boot (so the widget isn't blank) and then when you press play, the song will start without having to open the app first (like the Google Play Music app's widget). I primarily use Google Play Music in my car, but also use other apps like SoundCloud, TuneIn, and the stock radio, so if you added that feature the widget would be absolutely perfect. I just purchased the plus key and I'll share this app with others in the Android Car Headunit community!

When I pause the music it doesn't pause, when I play the music it doesn't play unless I have the app open in the background. Also you can't play music that you've played before. Say I stopped listening to music for 1 hour, when I click play on the widget it doesn't play it. I have to open the app. Also if you don't listen to music for a while the widget goes blank. I would like if the album cover would stay instead of go away. I would also like it if we had the option to repeat a song or shuffle.

This app used to be my favorite for the design on my phone. Once the new update for the note 3 came out,i would click on the widget and it would say unfortunately jacks music widget had unexpectedly stopped. It's been like that for a month or so. Please Fix! Thanks.

I love the concept of this and most of the time it works perfectly. The only problem is that there seems to be a limited amount of mp3 player apps that want to play with this widget. The only other issue is some weird behaviour with YouTube and Bluetooth but I suspect that has nothing to do with this app. All and this is so good and essential I wonder why it is not built in to android.

This app works great, but I feel like there could be more features. For example, the app gives you an option to specify which app to open when the album art is clicked. I say that should be the default app to open if no music is currently playing, but to open the active music app in any other case.

It is generally very good, however I have a widget for Podcast Addict, and I really only wanted this one to be for Play Music. Unfortunately, when a podcast is playing this widget switches to playing from Podcast Addict, whereas I want the music I was last playing to stay there, paused, so I can continue playing it at a later date. Unfortunately this means having to uninstall it and try and find something else.

This is a very good app. I particularly like how it can change color to match the album. The only problem I have is that I can't choose to block certain apps. I listen to my music through Google Play, but I also listen to audio books through a different app. I like to keep my audio players seperate so I'd like the option to block my audio book player from showing up in this widget. Other than that, keep up the good work.

From the discription it seems you are supposed to skip from lock screen. Followed instructions and it didnt work... i use pandora and it has its own widget. Not sure whats the point. If im misinterpreting let me know and ill adjust rating

I have the galaxy note 4 and it doesn't work. Whenever I have music playing it doesn't turn on and when I press a button on it (with or without music) it sends a message saying jack's music widget has stopped. Pls fix it

Can't figure out how to actually get the widget on my screen. I can open the app up and choose how I want the widget to look, but it doesn't show up on my screen. How do I actually set it up onto my screen?!

Z70%
by Z####:

I liked the app until I turned on my Bluetooth headphones that read text messages, it caused pandemonium at the point. If I touched the app it would take me into the headphone app not my music app. Had to stop using

Overall the widget does what I expected, plays music, shows song name, artist and album art. I configured it to open Music app when tapped, and it works most of times -- unless I have Amazon Kindle running, it will open Amazon Kindle instead! kind of annoying, I don't know who's bug it is, either Kindle misreported itself as a media player, or the widget is not checking it throughout. I'd give it 5 stars if the bug was fixed.

T70%

I have it set on Spotify as default but after I watch a video, on chrome, it shows up on the widget. Maybe create a way to block certain apps? Know the issue is fixable so I will definitely keep it installed

N70%
by N####:

When I'm watching a video and then want to switch to music the widget will display the video I was watching rather than the music. The app also will not start music until the desired app is open, defeats the purpose of using it I'm my opinion. If you could program it avoid the issue or if it is a bug I am getting I would appreciate a fix.

Used to love this app but unfortunately after updating the OS of my G3 to lollipop it instantly force crashes. Will check back in a few months to update if anything changes.

Great widget. I would like it to display for about 5 to 10 sec then disappear until new song/next track. and show the new song. Another option would be great if it showed where the music coming from. little logo on the upper corner showing spotify/google play/etc...

The widget stops working, won't update song. It will often go to shazam instead of spotify.. give us the option to use it only for one app not the most recent one. It's broken atm but would be amazing if it worked as it should

Worked great on my LG G3. Now does nothing on my Samsung Galaxy S6 edge. Buttons don't work at all. Hope it's updated with a fix then back to 5 stars.

It crashes often on lollipop. Usually resolves itself after a while but it's pretty annoying. Once that's fixed - 5 stars! Would love to buy the premium version. Update: I found that you need to give it notification access before setting up the widget and it won't crash. My bad!

Doesn't switch easily between google play music and poweramp, still stuck on the last play song despite changing to poweramp and doesn't have options to change the shuffle/repeat options. Looks nice though.

This music widget looks great, but the buttons on the widget do nothing when pressed. I can click on it to open the music app, but the other buttons do not work. I'm using an HTC One M8 so maybe it doesn't work well with Sense. I hope this can get fixed!

Was unusable for me on my LG G3 lollipop. Crashes when you try to place the widget or press any of the buttons. But then read hidden in the description that you need to give access in the security > notifications setting. Would benefit from having this information pop up when you use the app, like other apps. Otherwise very clean, works great.

The latest update has killed the app on my phone. Empty widget, doesn't work at all now. HTC Desire 816 4.4.3 Favorite widget by far but please fix so I can use it. EDIT: update provided all necessary fixes. Works like a charm now

U70%

Would give 5 star but it is very buggy has lollipop support which is nice and hard to find does what it says works great on my nova launcher and note 4 would give 5 stars if it ran smoother best multi purpose widget out though

D70%
by D####:

The only reason I have this as a 4-star app is that it's a little slow with Spotify integration.

E70%
by E####:

Although the app was updated to the Lollipop APIs, this app is no longer functional on 5.0. Pausing or playing music anywhere outside of the widget freezes it until reboot. Really unfortunate, as this is the nicest looking music widget out there!

Z70%
by Z####:

One thing I'd like to see added is the ability to control the color theme of the app itself. Currently, Lollipop on-touch colors are based off of app color, so when I touch play or next on the widget, a bright blue circle pops up where my finger touched, and it looks bad. This is a very minor gripe, but it would be awesome if color themes for the app could be added!

I'm using Spotify, on Android 5.1 on my Nexus 6. The widget not only shows the wrong band info, it shows a completely different band's album artwork, and none of the buttons do anything. If I press the album artwork at least it opens Spotify, so its got that going for it, which is nice.

T70%

Nice app, lovely interface. Also the best widget out there, yet it stops working from time to time. Widget is not responding after not playing music for a while, responding once I manually trigger the music from the stock Music app. I would give 5 stars but that problem is pretty big for a widget app.

D70%
by D####:

This is a very cool widget and fits my style for whatever design mood I'm in when changing my home screen. The only gripe I have is if my play music app is killed, hitting the play button does not start the app up and start auto play. Not a huge problem but it is a couple extra steps that should be unnecessary. Fix for this guarantees 5 and an upgrade to pro version! Thanks again.

K70%
by K####:

Customization is key, it's a great alternative to Play Music's awful widgets but I'd love an option to hide the album art and centre the artist information/media buttons for a more minimalist design. This is a very good app but it could be great with a few more customization options.

D70%

Nice little translucent widget on my home screen. I like how it controls whatever music you had open last and you don't need a separate widget. Be sure to read the description for instructions. On galaxy note 4 I had to go to settings - sounds and notifications - notification access - and check off the music widget for it to work. Edit: With Samsung music player set as my default, tapping the empty widget opens the kindle app. Same with phonograph.

Have had this widget on my Tab S right in the middle. Shows anything whether it's Spotify local music. But post Lollipop. Nothings shows and error messages is all you get from the app. Please update to work with Lollipop.

D70%

And then you stopped fixing the bugs. Crashes every time I open my phone on KitKat (have not tried v2.02 though), and Marshmallow (every time). Crashes whenever I play music, crashes when I look at my phone, crashes after it crashes... And then crashes again. I miss it :( It was my friend :,( It made my home screen complete.

D70%
by D####:

When Spotify or Google Play Music aren't running, clicking the controls does nothing. Ideally it should start the default app and then send it the play signal. Otherwise, its my go-to widget on all my devices.
