About Morse Machine for Ham Radio

This program teaches you to receive Morse code (CW).

It starts with two letters and adds more when it sees that you are ready. This is the easiest way to learn code because the computer thinks about the practice you need next instead of wasting your time with stuff you already know or confusing you with stuff that you don’t.

You'll find yourself learning CW with fun as if it is a game.

The original idea comes from Ward Cunningham K9OX (http://c2.com/morse/) and first described in an article in the May 1977 issue of QST magazine.

The app by default uses the LCWO letter sequence (derived from Koch one) and starts with the first two letters: K and M.

For Each letter you have a column showing how high is your error score. It starts from 100 and lowers as you start guessing letters right and increases when you are wrong or you take too much time to recognize it.

But you'll have 5 different letter layout to choose from.

SETTINGS

WPM (Words Per Minute): let you set the speed of the CW playing. The suggested speed is 20. The minimum is 15. You should choose a speed that does help you focus on the sound of each letter and not on the dits and dahs.

CW TONE: choose a tone frequency that suits your ears. Default is 700Hz

LESSON: sets the lesson level. By default you start with lesson 1 (2 letters) and as you get confident with them new ones are addedd.

MINIMUM ERROR LEVEL: sets the minimum average error level before adding a new letter.

TIMEOUT: sets the number of seconds to wait before the app gives you a hint of the letter.

TIME LIMITED SESSION: by default the session stops when you decide to stop. But you can set it to automatically stop after 5/10/15/20/25/30 minutes.

RESET SETTINGS: resets the error level of each letter back to 100%.

LETTERS SEQUENCE: let's you select the letter sequence from a choice of 5 different ones:

LCWO (the default one):
K M U R E S N A P T L W I . J Z = F O Y , V G 5 / Q 9 2 H 3 8 B ? 4 7 C 1 D 6 0 X

KOCH (the most famous and used one):
K M R S U A P T L O W I . N J E = F 0 Y , V G 5 / Q 9 Z H 3 8 B ? 4 2 7 C 1 D 6 X

ORIGINAL MM (the original sequence from the 1977 article):
Q 7 Z G 0 9 8 O 1 J P W . L R A M 6 B / X D = Y C K N 2 3 ? F U 4 5 V H S I T E

ETANIM (one of the classical sequences):
E T A N I M D S O U R C K P B G W L Q H F Y Z V X J 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 8 9 0 . / = ?

OSCAR I7OHP (a great CW trainer here in Italy):
A U V E I S 1 2 H T M O 3 N D B 4 G Z 5 R L F 6 Q W 7 J K 8 C Y 9 X P 0 . / = ?

Choose the one that suits better your training needs or switch from one to the other.

At the end of each session, the app will give you a score. It'll also record your best score so that you can compete with yourself and see how much your performances are improving.

Learn CW the fun way!

It's very good and well worth the money. Just wish you could set the time between beeps to be a little longer. Being new to Morse code makes it hard to tell the difference between a multiple dots and dashes in quick succession. Also an on-screen representation of the sounds (dots and dashes) being played for new letters may help reinforce learning.

N70%
by N####:

It's a much better way to get the rhythm of the Morse Code over the traditional trainers (where you just type groups of 5 letters). I always intend to practice for 5 minutes and it always ends up being a half hour! Perhaps more can be added, like another game mode or something. Anyway, 5 stars!

O70%
by O####:

This app had been very helpful in my quest to learn Morse code. Just two changes I'd make: When you complete a session, if you happen to touch the screen, because you were just about to type the letter you just heard, the score report goes away. Also, you can reset letter weights, which more or less resets your progress, but your high score can't be reset, short of uninstalling. A nice to have would be the ability to see weight changes from a session. This way, you can keep in mind those letters that may be slipping from your memory.

I went from nothing to a 5wpm copy in a week, this app is amazing. The only thing I wish I had would some sort of a timer. "Start for 10mn" or something, there's no way to know how long you're training while you're training. But otherwise really amazing!

N70%
by N####:

Give it a 5 for learning the letters. Give it a 3 for learning to read. Although I could read the letters I was slow hunting on small keyboard. It does nothing to learn to hear words and see the letters in your head, react to but not think them. RECOMMENDED.

N70%
by N####:

Very good program. The only think I don't like about it is that I can't change the volume without being penalized for a wrong answer. Otherwise, excellent way to learn / practice Morse Code.

N70%
by N####:

Great app. I wish, however, that after your score displays, it stops taking inputs for 0.5-1 second. I find myself trying to hit the next letter and it closes the score menu. I need to see my stats!

I've never learned cw so fast in my life! I can't believe how easy it is to pick up with this app. I've tried a few other trainers, so far this is the best.

N70%
by N####:

There is one small issue once you press start and try to change the volume it counts every volume button press as an error and drops your rating down. Other than that great

Excellent trainer. Only other ones of this type I've found were for pc. Works flawlessly. I alternate with Wolphi Morse Trainer ( also brilliant) for a variety of training methods. Highly recommended.

Gonna rate this with 5 against a number of others I've tried. This guy gets it. Agree with another reviewer that the end of lesson popup needs to persist for longer, I've been clicking right past it and don't know how to recall those metrics. But holy smokes am I picking up CW. The training is relentless! Edit: my 12yo was curious about what 'game' I was playing. He's now caught up to me. They're sponges I tell ya.

I really enjoy this app! it's helped me get back to where i started about ten years ago with Morse code. It's simple, brilliant and fun! Only one other Morse code program has been this helpful and that was ham university. Unfortunately that it's no longer updated. This it's an amazing learning tool that i highly recommend! But it and i guarantee you won't be disappointed as long as you put forth some effort kudos to you Andrea IU4APC! Thank you so much!

This is the best Morse tutor app I have ever used (and I have tried a LOT). Don't even look at Morse code printed - it will make you think of dots and dashes - but use only this app to learn the sounds. Start with just two letters and the app introduces more automatically as you improve. An excellent app, and well-supported by the author. "73 es GL"

I really like this app. The concept is great and my code is improving rapidly. Much better than all the other morse code trainer apps I've tried and a real pleasure to use. My only complaint is that the app crashes whenever I try to reset the weights of the letters. No big deal to restart the app. Fix this and I'll give it a 5.

W70%

Tried lots of apps to help me learn , most are lacking in quality , this app is not only well designed and stable but is actually rewarding/satisfying to use. Does fry the brain after a while but suppose its a sign its working ! Highly recommended

C70%
by C####:

In the landscape view, I get the letters but spend too much time searching the really wide keyboard for them! If this app had portrait mode I would give 5 stars.

E70%
by E####:

Let me start by saying this app is awesome. I'm learning Morse code very quickly with it. It's effective at giving me letters/numbers/symbols I don't know as well. But it's not perfect. First, the keyboard is huge on my 6 inch phone (even using the old look), which makes it difficult to type the letters quickly. Additionally, holding my phone in landscape mode means I'm holding my hands over the speaker. I really wish there were a portrait mode with a normal sized keyboard. I have to take a star off for this. Second, there is a small audio bug. If you don't hit the key fast enough, the audio replays, and if you hit the correct key during the replay, the audio glitches out and the next letter starts playing immediately, making the next letter harder to discern.

E70%
by E####:

Fantastic app with emphasis on learning the sounds rather remembering the dots and dashes. The method of recognising which letters I'm struggling with and repeating these ones works really well. Almost 5 stars as changing the volume counts as a wrong guess and it's a little too easy to bypass the summary screen.

C70%
by C####:

I've noticed that when delay is set to 2s the weight table isn't updating, no matter how fast I click the letters. Other than that, it's a great practice tool

Fast easy simple. Asks only for the file permission. No ads. Wonderful way to learn. Haven't touched code since the days of code testing. Amazing how quickly it comes back. Thanks for a great app! Well worth the money.

This is pure genius. Your WPM will be up in no time. Excellent app and a bargain! 73 de ZS1CDG - developers please add multiple letters/callsign mode!!!

I haven't found anything better for learning Morse code. Thank you.. My thoughts are when introducing new parts of Morse its sometimes difficult to audibly distinguish dots and dashes. Some visual cues may help.

C70%
by C####:

The only thing I wish it did that it does not is sync between my devices, but on the other hand that just means more practice getting them to the same point. Excellent app for learning CW and increasing your speed! Love it!

C70%
by C####:

Mostly good, I wish it would stay in the 'old look' when selected, sometimes it cuts the first dit or sends half a dah after it has played a 'buzzer' sound which means you misunderstand the following code until you restart.

by W####:

Morse Machine uses the tried and true Koch method of teaching the International Morse Code. It starts randomly sending two different letters, M and K, and you press the on screen keyboard to show which character you just heard. When your score is accurate enough, it introduces a new Morse character until you know all 26 letters, all 10 numbers and simple punctuation. I suggest you learn the sounds at 20 words per minute or faster. 73 de VK2DMH

Great tool for learning. FUN. Fantastic progress for me. Good choice of settings. Easy to switch between old and new views(both equally loved). I would love a red night time skin (to avoid blue light at bed time), working well with OLED screens.

Starts off a little slow but builds and builds until you are juggling lots of letters then it becomes a real challenge and fun! Good work. 73

Easy start to learning cw, but only supports single characters, and crashes a lot... Can't fault it though, since it took me from 0 to more advanced apps...

Wow!! I can really sense the intelligence in this little app! I, among many, have had to struggle with learning the code. Sitting there listening to CDs, sound bytes etc has been really frustrating as you eventually begin to memorize the code being sent. Thus averting your ability to really learn the code. I've come across several trainers that use sound-alikes to master the dit-dah sequences, but found that to distracting. I've seen this algorithm used in many programs for the PC. Macs and Linux systems, but dreaded the fact I could lug them around with me everywhere I go. Having this app on the phone really makes sense as I can sit there in the dentist office and practice. Yup, this is definitely a keeper. I would look forward to a Pro version that included abilities to track your progress via logs or visual display. Thanks for making this available!!

Though there are some other training apps this is fun, versatile and as addictive as Tetris or the like. I am looking forward to improving my CW. This works well.

C70%

..could be made better. I have a suggestion: we all know Koch method is nice way to learn CW. However, I'd like to see a mode where group of characters is sent with normal spacing, so that one have to memorize the sequence. After receiving, there would be some extra time to type those received letters in. Just like it works now, but with more than one character a time. I think that would resemble more the traffic we can hear on the bands!

This is a great CW trainer! ... 30 years after learning morse I'm using it to recover the skills. Only thing I would like to see is a way to be able to do random letters with random spacing and a text file generated so you can check what has been sent... just so that you can practice writing down the letters instead of finding them on a keyboard.

The simple design of this app is its strongest point. The new layout fits very well with my phone screen. My only wish is for it to include common telegraphy punctuation marks (ar, sk, etc.). Good job in such a great app.
