The Hunger Games universe is a dystopia set in "Panem," a country consisting of the wealthy Capitol and twelve districts in varying states of poverty. Every year, children are chosen to participate in a compulsory annual televised death match called "The Hunger Games." 74 years ago, there were thirteen districts. The districts attempted to start a revolution against the Capitol. The Capitol won, District 13 was destroyed and as punishment for the uprising, an annual televised death match called The Hunger Games was created by the Capitol. For the past 74 years, two participants, one male and one female, known as ‘Tributes,' between the ages of 12 and 18, are chosen randomly in a "reaping" lottery from each district. Children may volunteer as a Tribute, instead of selection by lottery ballot. Once all are selected, they are taken to an arena and fight until only one is left alive. Katniss Everdeen is a 16-year-old girl, from District 12, who volunteers for the 74th Hunger Games, after her 12-year-old sister, Primrose Everdeen, is picked from District 12 for a Tribute reaping. Katniss survives the games along with Peeta Mellark (the male selected from District 12). When they both defy the Capitol by threatening to commit suicide at the end of the 74th game instead of one killing the other, the Capitol is angry at their defiance. This defiance inspires rebellion in several districts. In Part 2 of the Hunger Games, Catching Fire, Katniss and Peeta tour the districts in the ‘Victors Tour’, attempting to subdue the rebellion they inspired from defying the Capitol at the end of the 74th games. Then, the reaping for the next Hunger Games, the 75th, takes place.
For these games, part of the "Quarter Quell" that takes place every 25 years, Victors of past games are chosen to participate, and no lottery is commenced. When only a few Victors remain in the game, including Katniss and Peeta, the arena is destroyed. Three of the tributes, including Katniss, are rescued from the crumbling arena by some of the survivors of District 13, but the other three Tributes, including Peeta, are captured by a Capitol hovercraft, and flown away to parts unknown. The rebellion continues, with Katniss being used as the figurehead of inspiration for the uprising.
