SmartCoin

SmartCoin is a mobile solution that allows customers to receive their small change from merchants as a top-up onto a virtual Account and a pre-paid Visa card (SmartCoin Visa Card).

The pilot programme will initially be run among the country's convenience stores(Bakeries, Retail shops, Super markets), which typically conduct large volumes of small cash transactions and provide customers with top-up services for their SmartCoin virtual Accounts and SmartCoin Visa pre-paid cards.

The customers should also be able to spend their money using just their mobile phones which will communicate with mobile phones of the merchants.

Furthermore the customers will be able to withdraw their money from convenience shops, into any of the available Mobile Wallets (Orange Money, MTN Mobile Money), into their bank Accounts, and from ATMs (Automated Teller Machines) using the SmartCoin Visa Card.

Apart from change, customers can top- up their SmartCoin Accounts by using available Mobile Wallets, UBA prepaid Visa Card and even Paypal.

It is also planned to have a money Transfer from Europe and America to the SmartCoin Account using Paypal and other Electronic Wallets.

The idea is to have a system which will serve as a relay between the cash and virtual money actors already in the market to increase cash recycling.
