ক্যান্সার কী?
বিশ্বের সমস্ত প্রাণীর শরীর অসংখ্য ছোট ছোট কোষের মাধ্যমে তৈরি। এই কোষগুলো একটা নির্দিষ্ট সময় পরপর মারা যায়। এই পুরনো কোষগুলোর জায়গায় নতুন কোষ এসে জায়গা করে নেয়। সাধারনভাবে কোষগুলো নিয়ন্ত্রিতভাবে এবং নিয়মমতো বিভাজিত হয়ে নতুন কোষের জন্ম দেয়। সাধারনভাবে বলতে গেলে যখন এই কোষগুলো কোনও কারণে অনিয়ন্ত্রিতভাবে বাড়তে থাকে তখনই ত্বকের নিচে মাংসের দলা অথবা চাকা দেখা যায়। একেই টিউমার বলে। এই টিউমার বিনাইন বা ম্যালিগন্যান্ট হতে পারে। ম্যালিগন্যান্ট টিউমারকেই ক্যান্সার বলে।
বিস্তারিতভাবে বলতে গেলে, অনিয়ন্ত্রিতভাবে বিভাজনক্ষম হয়ে বৃদ্ধি পাওয়া কলাকে নিয়োপ্লাসিয়া (টিউমার) বলে, এবং সেরকম ক্রিয়া যুক্ত কোষকে নিয়োপ্লাস্টিক কোষ বলে। নিওপ্লাস্টিক কোষ আশেপাশের কলাকে ভেদ করতে না পারলে তাকে বলে নিরীহ বা বিনাইন টিউমার। বিনাইন টিউমর ক্যান্সার নয়। নিওপ্লাসিয়া কলা ভেদক ক্ষমতা সম্পন্ন হলে তাকে ম্যালিগন্যান্ট টিউমার বা ক্যান্সার, এবং তার অনিয়ন্ত্রিত বিভাজনক্ষম ভেদক ক্ষমতাইযুক্ত কোষগুলিকে ক্যান্সার কোষ বলে। অনেক ক্যান্সার প্রথমে বিনাইন টিউমার হিসাবে শুরু হয়, পরে তার মধ্যেকার কিছু কোষ পরিবর্তিত (ট্রান্সফর্মেসন) হয়ে ম্যালিগন্যান্ট (অর্থাৎ ভেদক ক্ষমতাযুক্ত) হয়ে যায়। তবে বিনাইন টিউমার ক্যান্সারে পরিবর্তিত হবেই তার কোন স্থিরতা নেই। কিছু বিনাইন টিউমার সদৃশ ব্যাধি আছে যাতে ক্যান্সার হওয়া অবস্যম্ভাবী - এদের প্রি-ক্যান্সার বলে। নামে বিনাইন অর্থাৎ নিরীহ হলেও বিনাইন টিউমারও চাপ দিয়ে আশেপাশের কলার ক্ষতি করতে পারে। মেটাস্টাসিস হলো ক্যান্সারের একটি পর্যায়, যাতে ক্যান্সার কোষগুলি অন্যান্য কলাকে ভেদ করে ও রক্ত, লসিকাতন্ত্র (Lymphatic System) ইত্যাদির মাধ্যমে দূরবর্তী কলায় ছড়িয়ে যায়।
