दृणनिश्चयी, महान देशभक्त, धर्मात्मा, राष्ट्र निर्माता तथा कुशल प्रशासक शिवाजी का व्यक्तित्व बहुमुखी था। माँ जीजाबाई के प्रति उनकी श्रद्धा ओर आज्ञाकारिता उन्हे एक आदर्श सुपुत्र सिद्ध करती है। शिवाजी का व्यक्तित्व इतना आकर्षक था कि उनसे मिलने वाला हर व्यक्ति उनसे प्रभावित हो जाता था। साहस, शौर्य तथा तीव्र बुद्धी के धनि शिवाजी का जन्म 19 फरवरी, 1630 को शिवनेरी दुर्ग में हुआ था।

स्वामी विवेकानंद कहते हैं –
