Flyover Country is a National Science Foundation funded offline mobile app for geoscience outreach and data discovery. The app exposes interactive geologic maps from Macrostrat.org, fossil localities from Neotomadb.org and Paleobiodb.org, Wikipedia articles, offline base maps, and the user’s current GPS determined location, altitude, speed, and heading. The app analyzes a given flight path and caches relevant map data and points of interest (POI), and displays these data during the flight, without in flight wifi. By downloading only the data relevant to a particular flightpath, cache sizes remain reasonable, allowing for a robust experience without an internet connection.

Flyover Country is not limited to the window seat of airplanes. It is also ideal for road trips, hiking, and other outdoor activities such as field trips and geologic field work.

How to use FC:
-Tap two or more points on the map to specify your path, then click 'Load path' in the top right corner to view the data associated with the path. Select 'Save for offline' to store the data and associated articles on your device for offline use. Access saved paths from the 'Saved' menu.
-Toggle 'GPS' to the on position in the side menu (accessed by pressing the menu button, top left). This will enable position tracking, speed, heading, and altitude information to be accessed from the map view.
-You may also select your 'Trip mode' from the side menu. the 'plane' provides a wide strip of data while 'car/foot' provides a narrower but more detailed geologic map with detailed unit descriptions and metadata.

Known issues and future features:
-Fossil silhouette icons are not yet stored offline.
-Wiki article images are not yet stored offline
-Plot breadcrumbs of flight path trajectory during flight
-More data! If you have a data source suggestion email Shane at Loeff081@d.umn.edu

Fascinating with so much info about geological features of wherever you are.

Loved the older version. This one gives me a white screen, my old saved paths are gone and I cannot make new ones for my flight tomorrow.????

D70%
by D####:

Would be great if it worked. Downloading fails after getting most of the way through (when fetching from Wikipedia maybe). Tried many times, used GB of data, but couldn't get it to complete.

D70%
by D####:

I was loving this app initially. But, then it stopped working suddenly. Once it starts download and shows POI, it fails to save maps for offline use. I have uninstalled and reinstalled but it was of no use. Please look into it.

M70%
by M####:

What means my POI??? I think it needs some improvements, when zooming in you have to wait a while till map is load

U70%
by U####:

Lots of fun. Basically just a convenient way to cache macrostrat maps on your phone, but who wouldn't want to do that?!

D70%
by D####:

Great to know where we are especially with planes without IFE.

D70%
by D####:

Background downloading would be the feature I would add.

D70%
by D####:

Great idea, and pretty well executed. Having trouble loading wiki articles, though. Maybe allow for partial saves and/or updating saves? Also it would be really nice to be able to import a flight path from one of the flight tracker sites.

D70%
by D####:

Unfortunately my phone's, honor 5c, gps doesn't work very well on planes so couldn't test all that well...took a while to figure out too...why is metric speed only in m/s? Could add km/h and kts?

D70%
by D####:

Super fun. Once I figured out how to use it - I do this for every flight!

D70%
by D####:

Great way to know what you're flying over. Speedometer didn't work for me. Also consider putting dates on downloaded info.

D70%
by D####:

Have tried it on several flights and it has never worked. I basically get a black screen. Galaxy Note 5.

D70%

Have been looking for a location geology guide for a while. Awesome

D70%
by D####:

Similar to the one that southwest airlines has, but much more informative!

T70%

I was so looking forward to using this app, got settled on the plane turned it on and only got a blank screen, very disappointed.

Best app ever!

Great app! So useful!!

I'm probably too stupid to figure it out, but it didn't track in flight, had to have airplane mode off to get it to even open the saved map. Everytime I turned off much of the clutter like mammal fossils, the track map disappeared. Everytime I touched the map to zoom it turned tracking off, which is funny because it wasn't tracking anyway! Uninstalled after one flight. If I'm missing something please tell me.

I've used this on two itineraries--to Chicago from South Carolina, and from Oakland CA. It worked well in the populous SE, providing a satisfying level of detail of rivers, cities etc. I was disappointed out West--usually didn't get a GPS signal on two flights, and while the geology was good and the mammoth and dinosaur sites were interesting enough, map data was sparse. The West has mostly small towns, which are commonly the only ones you may see, but they're not on the map. Across the Great Basin are many drainages to nowhere, which have carved deep enough chasms that they deserve to be named. I'd sacrifice the names of hillocks here and there for more hydrology and population. Also, roads not worth naming in the East may be the only ones for taking in the West, so some dirt road nomenclature seems appropriate. Final gripe: my flight path once was 20 miles South of my stored data set--major bummer! All this said, I'm very glad to have this app, it's a great idea which I'm sure will only get better. Thanks for developing it and taking an interest in this feedback. Take it from a geology nerd: you do rock!

I gave this app a try. My interest in flying over an area is what city river or lake are we over. This app doest have that kind of detail. Also must change units to imperial every time it's opened.

Used it on a flight from NY to Denver, worked very well. I had two phones on me, a galaxy s4 and s6. I did notice better GPS response on the newer s6.

I *love* this idea. Constantly bugging my wife (who gets the window seat) with "what is that??" and "we've gotta remember to look that up, later!" Now I can find out, in the air! Brilliant! If only it the app weren't so unresponsive much of the time and didn't outright freeze occasionally, it would be awesome!

J70%
by J####:

Love the idea, as I always get the window seat so I can see the terrain, geology and human impacts. I'd like to be able to save a GPS track so I can replay the flight, add comments or match it up with photos later, by importing into Lightroom for example. I can use other apps, but it'd be nice to have in one app that works offline.

Z70%
by Z####:

I had such high hopes for this ap. Fantastic idea but my Galaxy 6 active would not or could not receive any GPS at altitude while in a window seat rendering the ap useless. The only time it actually worked was when we were around 5000 feet or below. Holding out for an upgrade that actually works

Such a great app! I really love the offline capability. Now, if only this could be made to work in AR... :)

I love this app but have never been able to get a gps fix on a plane. I currently have a Samsung galaxy s4.

I love this app! After meeting one of the developers at a conference I spent the train ride home inquiring about every bump on the landscape. There was something interesting listed for everything I saw and many things I had never before noticed. Thanks so much!

Z70%
by Z####:

Instead of trying to figure out how to mark things in the latest version of Google maps I can just see what it is. But it saves maps to cache, and fills up my phone, ignoring the 40 available GB on external storage

I have to travel a lot for work, and this app is what I had been looking for a long time. It has taught me a lot about geography and geology also. Really cool!

Had read a lot about this app. Great concept, so I tried installing it on my Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 10.1, but all I get is a blank screen and some random text where it looks as if there should be buttons. Even the help menu did not work.

I fly several times a week for work and I'm really enjoying this app. I've not had any problems with downloading unless I was connected to crappy hotel WiFi. I've recommended it to several of my co-workers and they love it as well. I use the app on my iPad mini. So far no downloading or freezing issues for me. My only minor issue thus far is I'd like it if my saved city pairs would be alphabetized. Thanks for such a fun app!

Also, mph shows up as nn.00000000000000n, mph measurement beyond 3 decimal places to the right is pointless. And, airspeed is in knots, not mph or kph, iow, if u r going to go with a unit setting, go the extra mile with accuracy and add knots (also used in boating, and I would love to, thank u!)
