About Instant Pot Smart Cooker

The Smart Cooker app works with Instant Pot Smart smartcooker. It allows you controlling and monitoring the cooker wirelessly via Bluetooth connection. The app comes with a collection of recipes covering a large variety of food materials, cuisines and techniques. The recipes include traditional ones such as “New England Clam Chowder” and “Classic Mashed Potatoes” as well as intriguing ones such as “Onsen Tamago: Hot Spring egg (sous vide egg)” and “GABA Rice: Germinated Brown Rice”.

If you want to exercise your culinary creativity, you can also write recipe scripts using the 6 provided commands which include maintaining a temperature or pressure for a period, heating to a specified temperature or pressure, etc. The possibility of cooking style is unlimited. Once your recipe script is tested and proven, you can share it with friends who can reproduce exactly the same cooking procedure on their Instant Pot Smart.

It's functional, as far as it goes, but it doesn't register the .cooker extension on Android, so I haven't been able to download scripts. Also, and this is most important, it doesn't send notifications when the mode of the instant pot changes. This is the reason I got a Bluetooth enabled pot. I didn't want to miss the end of the pressure phase so that food that needs a quick release doesn't get overcooked. If you write a script for *every recipe* you can get a pop up in the app, but you have to leave the app open. Updates sent as notifications with a vibration or tone would be much more convenient. Pretty much every other app I have does this, whether I want them to or not.

It works on Android 6 but not 7. On 7, the UI got cut off when you try to adjust time or temperature. Edit on 11/28: It works on Android 7 now. It would be better if the import and export recipe feature can be easier to use. I have a new phone, moto x4 with Android 7.1.1. It seems like my phone can't connect to my instant pot.

Worked great for a while, then stopped connecting my Galaxy S6 via bluetooth. Now a major selling point for this rather expensive product doesn't work at all. Pretty disappointing. This is not Android 6. Dropping another point because of the unhelpful "it's not our fault" comment from the developer. Despite the reply, this connectivity still does not work with my Galaxy S6, with Android 7.0. Really disappointed. Will not purchase from this company again.

by N####:

Surprisingly poor integration for a $60 more expensive pot. You basically have a remote display of your pot timer anywhere in your house. Limited recipes and I can't get the app to recognize any I try to save. Stick with a cheaper pot and don't waste time with this app unless they massively overhaul it.

Recipes are hard to locate and difficult to access. So far have been unable to connect over wifi and can only connect over bluetooth. And if I'm connected over bluetooth I might as well be in the same room as the Instant Pot and therefore could operate the machine manually. Great pot, terrible app.

Well, I used the app successfully with a Galaxy S4 and a Galaxy S5. It was "clunky", but it worked. Had to upgrade to a Galaxy S7 Edge. App is "connecting" for over 30 minutes, paired devices count = 0. Meanwhile, food is cooking fine in the pot, lol. Did the 3 second "adjust" button thing several times without any visible change to the pot or the phone. The cooker is fantastic, the app is 3rd worldish, lol.

It might be a good app if I could get it to do anything. It opens fine & looks promising but as soon as I touch something it kicks me out. Extremely disappointing. Luckily the other 2 Instant Pot apps work like a charm.

I like the layout of this app, however with talkback on (the screenreader that ships with android I cannot easily adjust the time to hold the presure. I'm visually impaired and love my instapot, but if I cannot adjust time of cooking with the app easily that could pose a problem. Can your staff please look into this and make it just as accesible as the ios version? Thanks.

Great pot, terrible app. Looks like student school project. Not like app of well known company. You can use app somehow. Maybe 5% out of what is should be used for. With all that said it has been updated a year ago December 10, 2016. Why you created bluetooth IP anyway?

B70%
by B####:

I *really* wanted to like this app. The idea is promising, and the Bluetooth capability is the reason I spent more on my Instant Pot. But now it feels like wasted money. I cannot open .cooker files at all, and I see other Android users have had similar issues. This needs to be fixed, or Android IP users should be given some other workaround or partial refund. It feels wrong paying extra for a failed function on an otherwise fantastic product.

A handy additional feature could be adding notifications so you could be doing things like browsing your e-cookbook on your tablet and get notified when some event of interest happens to the Instant Pot. Recently figured out that the app has big problems connecting when it has to turn on bluetooth. If I manually turn on bluetooth before I open the app, the connection always seems to work OK.

Connected with Bluetooth fine. Cooking controls are good. You can use Delay to postpone cooking to a time but there's no way to stop cooking at a set time, e.g. 7pm v.s 5 hours from start. For some reason the screen won't turn off when the app is forgrounded. Mostly a good app but needs improvement.

Bluetooth worked once after way too much effort! Waste of money!

12/2017 update. This app is still garbage. Two phones later and I can pair. Sometimes. The inconsistency is infuriating. The pot is fantastic when it works but the frustration I experience when I use it makes a huge difference for me as to recommending this or not. Original review: I have a Samsung smartphone for work. A nexus 6 for my personal phone and a Samsung tablet... The tablet says the app isn't supported. Neither of the phones will work (the Samsung pairs but won't connect and the nexus says it can't pair because of a bad PIN). I expected a cool kitchen gadget.. Not this. EDIT: Response to the developer comment. A device or app that doesn't work on Android 4.X (18 month old Galaxy S5), Android 5.X (8 month old Galaxy 10 Tab2) or Android 6 (On a nexus 6 which I bought only a few months ago)? That's three different era different devices with three different version of Android. That's a pretty big miss on app compatibility.

This app is geared towards the smart (WiFi/Bluetooth) version of the Instant Pot. It is not geared towards all Instant Pot models. Additionally, there are not enough recipes in this app to justify having it use up precious space on my phone.

Instant Pot will not pair with LG V10. I paid an extra $60 for a feature that doesn't work. Not happy.

I'd give this app 4.5-stars if I could. First, it has some quirks: the scripting language for creating your own recipes is rudimentary - though this does make it simple to program. Next, there are some features I wish it had, like a better notification system when cooking is done. As it is, you still have to listen for the cooker to chime when done or you risk leaving food in too long. (overcooked eggs, mushy vegetables etc) Moving past the quirks, this app does exactly what you'd want: allows you to save recipes for repeated use, along with detailed ingredient and shopping lists, detailed step-by-step instructions, and multiple photographs. It also allows access to more data on your cooker (heat level, pressure, temperature etc) than you would get simply looking at the control panel. While I'd like to see some improvements to the app, the quirks aren't deal-breakers. You can even give it a try as a recipe management tool if you don't have the Smart model.

App will not pair. HTC M8, check the specs, BLUETOOTH 4.0 HARDWARE. That means the whole "6.0 bug, didn't allow backward connectivity, we developed around BT4.0" excuse is pure unadulterated garbage. Not a very becoming position for a dev to take on something so EASILY verified as BS. Currently at android 6.0, can connect to MANY BT4.0 devices effortlessly and consistently, including Sony BT headphones, etc....because the M8 IS 4.0. Instant pot needs to quit with the third world dev excuses and fix this app or come clean about their amateur coding. There is NO REASON an end user should be required to update to 6.0.1 while rocking BT4.0 on their device, save for inept devs. When you told another reviewer it was written for BT4.0 and 6.0 isn't backwards compatible, the jig was up. The M8 IS BT4.0. You're lazy and lying. Nice job, your flagship garbage Instant Pot is going back for a full refund, and negative word is going out to 1000s of unsuspecting potential customers.

I've now got the app working on 3 devices, Moto X 2nd gen under Lollipop, Fire HDX 8.9 (OS v5.6.0.0) with google services and play store installed and Moto X Pure under Nougat (the last 2 required a lot of fiddling with bluetooth). Still no ability to use the ringtones/alarm sounds on the phone/tablet to indicate when a script finishes so you have to be within earshot of the pot unless you're staring at the app. (WHY WOULD YOU NOT ENABLE THIS????) What irritates me most is the lack of an export/import/backup function. It's a royal pain to move custom scripts to a new device one emailed script at a time or manually getting each script recognized by the app if I move the entire directory via usb. NOTE: NOT ALL file manager apps will invoke the .cooker file extension correctly. One I have gotten to work is the default Motorola file manager app. Really, really, really want a wifi model of the smart pot.

I like connecting to my instapot. But, more recipes. Also, why have a search bar of it is just gonna take you to all the recipes?

The basic functionality of connecting to the instapot does not work on newer editions of Android. This needs corrected immediately.

Easy to use for family of 7. Bluetooth works great across the house. Need more recipes. Other then that it is very easy to use.

N70%

it works! ..but I wouldn't recommend it. I thought that by this being from the instant pot company, that the recipes would be a little more intuitive and/or creative. you're better off using Google.

Y70%

Clicking on anything crashes the app. A basic functionality such as viewing the recipe should work, not crash for no reason. I hope the pressure cooker works better than the app.

L70%

The app is easy to use and does everything we need it to do. My favorite feature is its ability to adjust the pressure cooking time for the user's altitude.
