About Kids Measurement Science Lite

Young scientists learn to analyse the physical world by measuring across a variety of domains - time, size, weight and money. 5-8 year old kids measure length, weight, time and money in this science app using a tape, a scale, a clock and coins in 20 exercises. Full version has 300+ exercises of increasing difficulty.

Lite version has 5 exercises of each game -

* Length
Measure length and width of pencils, ribbons, balls and bookmarks - whole, halves and quarters.

* Time
Show time on an analog and digital clock in hours, half-hours, quarter-hours and 5 minutes.

* Money
Measure weights of watermelons, bottles, balls, boxes and many more.

* Weight
Pay for drinks, purses, fruits and many more using the coins.

These exercises help kids practice their scientific concepts in a practical way using made-up units of measurement. The mathematical concepts practiced include fractions, count-by-fives, addition by tens and hundreds, total using 25s, 10s, 5s and 1s. Some of the exercises can be solved in more than one way. Kids experiment with solutions as they play.

Our Story
When we looked for apps to help teach our kids, we couldn't find any that were good. One was just information text for the kids to learn by rote. Another was multiple-choice tests - just press buttons. A third had 2 sound-tracks and 4 animations running all at the same time. How was a kid supposed to focus?

So, we designed and built them games - that teach in the way parents and teachers explain concepts, and engage in the way playing does.

Audio instructions are great for pre-readers or uncertain readers. Length: To be fair, the description warns about this. The units used look a lot like inches, which is confirmed when one of the options is quarter-units. In metric, half still makes sense, but decimals would be more usual. I'd read one and a quarter centimetres as either 1.2 or 1.3 on a standard measuring tape. Time: Wonderful, no complaints. I love the way advanced levels make you choose the digital clock that reads, for instance, "twenty minutes to four" as well as setting it on the analog clock. Money: I really wish one could adjust the coin values. Canada has eliminated the penny, and offers one and two dollar coins in addition to five, ten, and twenty-five cents. In Australia, coin values are five, ten, twenty, and fifty cents, plus one and two dollar coins. In New Zealand, ten would go on the copper coin, with 20 and 50 being silver and the one and two dollar coins in gold. The UK has coins for 1, 2, 5, 10, 20, 50, 100, and 200. Allowing the parent to assign values to the different coins in "settings" would make it much more widely useful. Weight: Very good, scale too slow when over
