We recommend loading the app for the first time in a wi-fi area.
Ponderously slow to load. All content monetised. Hoped Android would be better but, not their fault, it's hopeless. With so many other news feeds free to use, it's uncompetitive.
The latest version is a big step back functionality wise. But the main reason I cancelled the subscription was the fact it stopped updating each day.
It would be great if it worked reliably but it doesn't on my Galaxy Note 10.1. Problems: I usually have to uninstall and reinstall it every day. This is the fastest way to get today's edition, otherwise it does not always recognise my subscription. Once I have downloaded one puzzle I can't download any others. The notification does not do anything. Once I have successfully downloaded, if I suspend it for a while and then come back it has to check my subscription again sometimes I have to download again. Very tiresome app. Wish I had not paid for a year's subscription.
Firstly, let me say I am a huge fan of the I Newspaper, the paper and it's content is worth a 5* review but this is review of the app which is somewhat poor. When it works, it is fine, renders pages quickly and zooms nicely. However I have many problems, especially the fact my device is unable to download a paper when not connected to WiFi (even on 4G I get constant blank screen downloading). Often the application requires a force quit and relaunch to pick up a new version is available (shows yesterday's!)
I am a great fan of the i but this app really tests your patience. Usually have uninstall then reinstall at least once a month, will only download when there is an Internet connection and no matter how many times you contact them they just fob you of with some excuse like they can't be bothered. I have other subscription downloads for various publications and never have any problems with them. You have been warned!!
Earlier versions have good performance and a badly for money paper well suited to tablet reading. Recent changes are tedious on slow broadband connection so can no longer recommend
Pocketmags subscription NOT honoured! Link to restore is dead. Tried to subscribe but get Google error message. Tried to subscribe online but can only do so if have Microsoft Outlook. Emails to help dept at the independent not replied to or not answered correctly. If you have apple you're fine, but this sucks for android users. Can't find kindle app to try either. The Independent is hopeless at Web support and managing subscriptions
Do not download this update. It does not solve a log in problem as it claims; it creates one. When I try to download an edition it asks for existing subscriber login. It keeps saying "login failed", even though I am still subscribed in Google play. It does not pick this up. Thank goodness I had not updated the app in other devices so I could still download today's paper. It does not appear to link to pocketmags as previous versions. So do not download the update. It messes everything.,
This new app does not work. Too slow if it works at all. Download perhaps sometime during the day. Pictures are pixillated and the new zoom fuinction has a mind of its own. Come on guys give us an app that works like the old one.
I have a Note 3 with a nice big screen.I would gladly pay for this but unfortunately the pages don't zoom anywhere near enough. Edit. Thanks for the update, unfortunately no way of checking it works as the free trial is no longer available.
more trouble downloading the paper again today - seeing as the paper has moved to digital only this app is a real discredit to them. It should be much better and much more bullet proof.
Not great but allows me to read the paper every day, bit slow and sometimes fiddly but not as bad as others have said, try for a week to see if it works for you
This app is so bad I've now cancelled my subscription. Used to be good now can't download without problems and it insists on portrait mode even when my tablet is in landscape mode
Up until the update this was great - now, I'd get the paper quicker if I walked to the newsagents!! The latest update has ruined it. Constantly crashing and takes an age to download, often not achieving download. Until update issues fixed, don't waste your time and money
No free trial as advertised, can't even subscribe if I wanted too, giving this a miss, no wonder Indy had to shut if this anything to go by
Waited ages after installing and opening but it can't get past the loading stage. Using android 4.1 The only app that works flawlessly and with great additional functions is the Guardian app, both of these. The Independent one works well for news article content but the puzzles functionality is limited. This I app however will not even open and that bodes badly for how well it could work if it did.
The "free trial" just seems to be a picture of the front cover of today's edition and a couple of puzzles which don't load properly. Was hoping to at least read a couple of pages to try the app. Also keeps either asking me to subscribe or crashing. Think I'll give it a miss. Disappointed.
Totally agree with the previous comments. I found the previous app to be generally good. Since the changes it is very problematical and keeps crashing, the zoom feature only works after numerous attempts. No spin please, just sort it out!
Why do i have to reinstall everytime i want a new newspaper.....so fustrating?
I understand a need or want to monitise but £60 per year in a world of free news is a joke. Esp. Given no free trial and the state of other user reviews. Sorry. I'm out.
Touch and go as to whether the app will even open. If you get in, 50:50 chance the paper won't load. Only good things about this app is the trial period. Thank God I didn't pay the £6 subscription!
Really annoying that I have to restart my tablet each day so I can download the days paper... very close to canceling subscription.
A great newspaper but the app is buggy and unreliable. It seems to spend a fair amount of time with "loading" on the screen when it's doing nothing of the kind. Why no updates for 8 months?
For a subscription app this is really poor. Repeated failures of the app to verify subscription on either nexus 5 or nexus 7. When it does verify the subscription it is unable to download/install the latest edition.
Previously it was slow, but at least I occasionally managed to read the paper. New app is cumbersome, clunky, and unresponsive. Having paid £50 for the pleasure of reading the paper every day, it is with considerable frustration that I find the app getting worse! Could a new update automatically download the paper at 5am?
I can't download paying £5.99 a month but can't download don't bother with this rubbish! I have cancelled. Go use the Guardian. You can get it for free if you don't mind the adds and it works.
It is my previous account registration
Won't let me subscribe or buy anything
Rubbish, gets worse with every update, often won't download then it's sluggish.
I love this app. Perfect for my daily briefing!
Doesn't open paper
Won't open, won't update, just crashes when you try to open anything to read it. I strongly advise not to subscribe!
Unable to download !!!
Cannot access account since May 1st they do not answer e mails waste of money
At least half a dozen separate attempts to open the app all failed - despite several install/uninstalls. Would give no stars if I could. If you can't get it right, don't bother offering the app at al!!!!
Literally a copy of the print edition, no good for display on a mobile phone screen.
My daily read...for those having zoom problems...go to home page...click top left>settings>reader settings>zoom options....set to 400%
Even with a Note 4 if u cannot zoom ..No good ..check out City AM paper free and zooms ..happy to be corrected if it will zoom ..
Disappointed. Difficult to read on 8" tablet. Needs rethinkrewrite.

This app worked perfectly for months and now a mandatory update has ruined it. Can't download paper on phone or tablet now. Download attempt takes forever then the app just crashes. Why insist on updates when all they do is harm? Cancelling subscription immediately.
