Every day at a certain time the app will get the new picture for you, no need to refresh, you will simply find it there.
If you run JellyBean ( Android 4.1+) or higher you will also be able to set the widget as and you will get a rich notification with the new image every day.
You can choose to automatically change your wallpaper each day with the new picture.
It's available for Android 3.0 + smartphones and tablets and also for +Google TV

Can somebody make an APOD app that doesn't constantly crash? This one is the worst in that regard. Even if I'm not opening it up to access its info, I got a crash alert every few seconds. I had to uninstall it.

Pictures are outstanding. Just a bit difficult maneuvering around the app at first. Worth the effort..... After having the app a week longer longer, not once could i access the account to find out what the pic's were of. It was always down no matter the time of day.
