불교 법화경

《묘법연화경》에서 부처는 머나먼 과거로부터 미래 영겁(未來永劫)에 걸쳐 존재하는 초월적인 존재이다. 그가 이 세상에 출현한 것은 모든 인간들이 부처의 깨달음을 열 수 있는 대도(大道, 一乘)를 보이기 위함이며, 그 대도를 실천하는 사람은 누구라도 부처가 될 수 있다는 주장이 경전의 핵심이다. 《법화경》은 모두 28개의 품(品, 장)으로 이루어져 있다. 간혹 《무량의경》, 《불설관보현보살행법경》과 함께, 《법화삼부경》(法華三部經)이라고 지칭하기도 한다. - 위키백과

『법화경』에서는 참으로 오묘한 진리를 선포하고 있습니다. 때문에 『법화경』의 내용을 간단히 단정해서 말할 수는 없습니다. 다만 이해를 도모하는 차원에서 특징적인 것을 몇 가지 추려 보면,

(1) 우주의 절대 평등의 세계를 말씀하고 있습니다. 「제2 방편품」에서 ‘십여시(十如是: 如是相, 如是性, 如是體, 如是力, 如是作, 如是因, 如是綠, 如是果, 如是報, 如是本末究竟)’를 통하여 현상의 차별을 초월하는 실상(實相) 평등의 진리를 말씀하고 있으니, 이것을 실상인(實相印)이라 합니다(諸法 實相).

(2) 「제16 여래수량품」에서는 ‘부처님의 영원한 생명’의 세계를 선언하고 계십니다. 부처님께서는 ‘많은 사람들은 생각하기를 석가모니불이 석씨궁에서 출가하여 성불했다고 하지만 내가 참으로 성불한 것은 무량아승지겁(無量兒僧祗劫) 이전이었다’고 진실을 말씀하십니다.

이것은 구원실성(久遠實成)이라 합니다. 부처님께서 출가, 성불, 열반하는 모습을 보인 것은 중생을 제도하기 위해서 ‘방편’으로 하신 것입니다. 실제로 부처님의 수명은 영원한 것입니다(壽命이 無量阿僧祗劫이라 常住不滅하노라).

(3) 부처님은 ‘중생의 아버지요, 세상의 구세주’이심을 선포하십니다. 「제3 비유품」에서는 “나는 많은 성인 중에 가장 높으며 세상의 아버지이다. 모든 중생이 다 나의 아들이다. 이 세상은 다 나의 소유며, 중생은 다 나의 아들이다. 이 세상의 고난은 오직 나 한 사람만이 구제할 수 있다”고 하셨습니다.

(4) 부처님은 영험과 신통력으로 중생을 구제하십니다. 부처님은 중생구제를 위해서 무한한 몸을 세상에 나타내시니 바로 ‘보살’과 ‘신장’이십니다.

보살은 문수(文殊, 지혜) 보현(普賢, 창조) 관음(觀音, 자비) 보살이 중심입니다. 그러나 문수, 보현은 다 자비를 실현하기 위해 존재합니다. 그러므로 보살은 관음보살이 기본입니다.

『법화경』에서는 「제25 보문품」을 통해서 ‘관세음보살의 신통력(神通力)과 위신력(威神力)’을 자세히 말씀하고 있습니다(十方諸國土無刹不現身).

(5) 구제의 확답을 주십니다. 부처님의 실지실견(悉知悉見)과 수기(授記)를 통해서 부처님의 가르침을 믿고(信仰) 따르면(修行) 다 구제받을 수 있음을 약속해 주십니다.

지금까지 말씀드린 것은 『법화경』의 중요한 내용만을 간략히 소개한 것입니다. 우리는 이 『법화경』을 통해서 ‘신앙’, ‘수행’, ‘포교’를 더욱 강력히 실천해야 할 것입니다.

불교는 구제의 종교이고, 성취의 종교이고, 해탈의 종교이며, 상생(常生)의 종교입니다. 『법화경』에서는 이와 같은 내용을 제시하고 있습니다.

그러면 우리가 《법화경》을 받아 지니거나 읽거나 외우거나 남에게 설하거나 베껴 쓰면 우리에게 어떤 변화가 오는지 알아보겠습니다.

첫째, 천안(天眼)을 얻지는 못한다 하더라도 부모에게서 받은 육안(肉眼)으로 삼천대천 세계의 모든 기세간(器世間)을 다 볼 수 있고, 또 삼계 중생들이 업을 짓고 그 과보를 받은 일을 다 보아 알 수 있습니다.

둘째, 천이(天耳)를 얻지 못했다 하더라도 부모에게서 받은 보통 귀로 삼천대천 세계의 모든 소리를 다 듣고서 분별해 알 수 있습니다.

셋째, 부모에게서 받은 육신의 코로 삼계의 모든 냄새를 다 맡고 일일이 분별해 알 수 있습니다.

넷째, 부모에게서 받은 육신의 혀로도 미묘한 법을 잘 설할 수 있고 또 어떤 음식이든 그 혀에 닿기만 하면 모두 훌륭한 맛으로 변합니다.

다섯째, 청정한 법신(法身)을 얻지 못했다 하더라도, 그 몸에 삼계 중생들의 생사의 모습과 성현들의 설법 장면 등이 거울에 비치듯 나타납니다.

여섯째, 부처님의 지혜는 얻지 못했다 하더라도 모든 가르침을 다 알게 되고, 가르침에 있는 그대로 사유하고 설하게 됩니다.
